I thought it was from The Talented Mr Ripley, which also has great 50s fashions. I wear the high waisted trousers in daily life, but pencil skirts are not great for the Tube.

It does indeed have fabulous clothes! And Cate does have a small part in it, but it's mostly Gwyneth in full skirts & capri pants!

I wore it I was in the supermarket passing an elderly woman in the same one. I’m in my 40s. She looked great, but after that happened a couple more times, I just didn’t feel good in it. It just felt like an older woman coat.

Are you worried you might catch oldness?

Some of these comments are bizarre aren't they?

I was helping at a charity function in the summer. I wore a recently purchased Seasalt short sleeved summer dress that was perfect for the weather. A much older lady in her late 80s turned up wearing the same dress. We all had a laugh about it because I am not so insecure about myself to worry about things like that.

OsfameronTanamoril · 23/10/2026 10:54

What do you dislike about it?

Thank you for asking! It has these design features e.g. it's very fitted and has additional tabs at the waist plus a fishtail hem (so longer at the back). Some people will like them and I thought I could live with them at first but now I find them really, really fussy and they annoy me intensely. I'd much rather have something plain, functional and to some people, ugly. But I've got it now and the problem is, it's a damn good bad weather coat, I'd never deny that, and some days nothing else keeps me as warm and as dry.

Just to add, I've had it about 10 years so some of those fussy details might have changed now, I've not checked.

And I'm 70, grey haired, rarely wear make up, haven't brushed my hair for 50 years and I care very much what I look like, particularly how I dress and I still enjoy fashion..

We're all different, regardless of age. Who knew?!

But I can't let the Janelle love go unchallenged. I really dislike mine. It actually depresses me when the weather drives me into wearing it. Unfortunately it's also a bloody effective coat, dammit.

You haven't brushed your hair in 50 years? Impressive. I have mad curly hair so I get that we need to avoid as much as poss. But I have to at the start of the day (with wetting down) otherwise I look like Gene Wilder. Are you just finger brushing/raking? That just never works for me. Sorry Im just really curious.

What are their leggings like? I've bought 3 pairs from Lovall & some more from M & S Thermals collection, are they thick & cosy or just normal thin ones?

I have a couple of pairs and they’re better than M & S but are also considerably more expensive. Lovely wide waistband and less bagging around the knees.

I have mad curly hair too but never brush it. I don't own a brush or a comb. I just run my fingers through it when it's got conditioner in. If it is dry and needs to be tamed then I wet it and use my fingers again. Brushing just makes it worse.

Well I think that poster is really really unpleasant and keeps going for people constantly who are simply giving their opinion on a BRAND. Which the OP asked about.
She also seems to think she is morally superior because she doesnt feel frumpy or doesnt care about looking older. Its really annoying.

Well, you did do a wee bit more than comment on the brand, to be fair! You said it gave off geography teacher vibes & was overly marketed wank that made women in their 50s look like they were in their 70s ...

There are lots of women in their 50s, 60s & 70s on this thread!! So I think people who wear a little or a lot of the brand will have been offended by that? Especially as your dislike of it seems to be a blanket one, where absolutely everything they do is frumpy & ageing. I don't agree that all of it is, though some is dated by current fashion standards, yes.

I actually don't own any Seasalt myself - but I wouldn't necessarily rule it out. Tbh there aren't that many brands that I would rule out entirely if I was challenged to put an outfit together from their range. I can think of a few that I'd probably find very difficult (Coast??), but I think I could probably find something that I could style & make my own from brands that I generally don't much like the look of, & don't buy from - eg Lucy & Yak, Hobbs, Phase 8, Karen Millen ...?

I am (probably overly) outspoken & honest in person - & I swear rather a lot too (Irish - on bad days, fuck is punctuation ...!!). I have a feeling you may be similar ...!! I have reined in my blunter comments since I came on MN though, as I realise it can be easy to interpret things as rude, hurtful etc when you're reading a stranger's words online with no context, facial expression or laughter etc. I did once really offend someone who'd posted a picture of (what I thought was) a really badly cut dress as a suggestion - I said that it looked cheap & nasty, & she came back to say that she already owned one & loved wearing it ... & I felt quite shit about myself because of that 😐

So now my innermost thoughts remain (mostly!) inner ... 😁!!!

(Feel free to tell me I've been a patronising, sanctimonious twat - as I probably have! It's ok, I can take it ...)

Blueandgreencoloursflashing · 23/10/2026 13:14

We may feel, quite rightly, we do not want to write off people who happen to be of mature years but is it not natural to reflect as has?

Not really. If I looked good in something and saw someone older/fatter/less stunningly gorgeous wearing it, I wouldn't feel it made me look old/fat/ugly.

People just need to feel confident rather than fearing looking Not Young.

saraclara · 23/10/2026 13:23

ccccccccc · 23/10/2026 09:44

I agree with @MujeresLibres that they're true to size. I have one on at the moment, the sleeves are the right length on me and the fit is excellent, not figure hugging and I'm not skinny! The washing instructions seem to say don't machine wash, but I buy a size up and use a 30 degree machine wash and they tend to tighten up. I don't tumble dry. The colours don't really fade noticeably.

Edited

I have sailor tops dating from last season, right back to, possibly, a decade ago. And looking at them I doubt you'd be able to tell which was which. I can't.
I wear them all the time through spring and autumn and just put them through an ordinary 30deg wash. No twisting, no fading, and the white bits still bright white.
They really are exceptionally well made.

It is good to feel confident and not fear, certainly. I think some posters were probably already having doubts, in this regard, and then seeing someone else/or their daughter giving feedback has confirmed that it is not for them.

This is why it is good to have this type of discussion. As you say I wouldn't rush to change what I choose but, for me, it would be a sure sign of ageing if I put the blinkers on and didn't reflect on my style.

Yeah what a knob you are! lol.
Nah you are good mate. I just dont enjoy the passive aggressive sneering - not just at me at some other posters. I have no time for that.
I take your point though. Some people dont want an actual opinion - I dont feel that way. The comments on other threads about brands I wear is funny as to me. Overgrown toddler, 'im mad me' vibes, etc. I dont take offense, its interesting to me.

Style and Beauty is a bit mental though isnt it. The skinny jeans thread was like fight club.

Fair enough. The details you don't like are the ones I like! Fishtail very useful for soggy park benches. My trendy kids laugh at me but they also have soggy bums and wet heads, so..

I also have a more stylish Protected Species but I prefer the Janelle for pure function.

AMarkAMissionABrandAScar · 23/10/2026 14:19

They do other coats which I absolutely love for simplicity (I've got a burnt orange Boscaswell, which is a shorter waterproof duffel, from their eBay outlet) but unfortunately you have to sacrifice the length.

Sounds as if I was lucky to miss the skinny jeans thread then ... (I hate them!)

I can only report second hand. I bought my wife two Seasalt tops last Christmas. The sizing runs generous. She sized down from her usual. The quality is solid. The jersey washes well and does not go bobbly. The prints are the Marmite part. She lives in the stripy ones. The floral ones stayed in the drawer. If you sit between sizes, go down.

BigGra · 23/10/2026 14:45

I have this in green, I put it in a cold hand wash in the machine and comes out fine.

CinderellaParker · 23/10/2026 14:56

I like Seasalt. I swerve the patterns but their linen, their t-shirts and some of their knitwear is very good. I especially like the Fruity jumpers which come out of a machine wool wash just fine and come in a lovely range of colours. Their trousers don't seem to work for my shape.

I don't feel that their clothes make me look old or frumpy any more than I think I look young and hip when I wear DMs (actually Solovairs) and Levis.

All I want is to look like me which tends to be part pottery teacher, part land girl, part gardener chic.

I wear mine all year round, and I'd not mentioned earlier about them not twisting but you're right, a real bonus, They don't seem to get thinner with every wash either.

Agree re Solovairs! I was really shocked at how the quality of DMs had gone downhill. (Also pottery teacher/ land girl/ gardener chic sounds excellent)

Don't want to derail this but I love my Solovairs. I needed to exchange and they'd sold out of that size. They added a pair into the following week's production schedule so I didn't have to wait. You won't get customer service like that from Doc Martens. And they were a tenner more expensive but better quality and made in the UK rather than by cheap labour in Vietnam and then shipped across the world.

They look great with my Seasalt jumpers too!

Well if you describe what you are wearing now in detail top to toe and I get to tell you its not stylish or attractive, then yeah we are even stevens. But I wouldn't do that, because Im not a knob.

OP: Whats Seasalt like.
Me: I think its shit and frumpy - I dont like it.
You: Implodes (and doesnt wear Seasalt 😂).
Other Regina Georges: Pile on about how Im uncool, think im down with the kids, ridiculous, dated, hideous ugly clothes, ask people my age?? etc. PERSONAL attacks. I never claimed to be a fashion guru just gave my honest opinion on a BRAND - not a person.

I said I dont like Seasalt. The brand. Didn't attack any individual. You did.

Agreed, this thread has been a little wild....who knew Seasalt could inspire such fiery passion! I really liked the sound of your outfits, by the way. I'm a similar age to you, and also very nostalgic for 90s indie style! Also a doc lover.

I also very much like (whispers) the odd Seasalt gem. I've lost weight recently, and didn't bother seeking out exact replacements for almost any of my bigger clothes. The only three things I found a like-for-like replacement for on Vinted, were 3 Seasalt items. A pair of cords, a indigo denim jumpsuit, and a beautifully cut midi skirt, quite plain. I even admit to owning one of those jersey, patterned midi dresses that have been guilty of inspiring the dreaded 'F' word! Mine is black with a slightly melancholy autumnal sparse floral pattern that reminds me of Disturbia patterns. I wear it with a wide fitted belt and boots. Happy to be embracing the F-core with that one, if that's how it's seen!
