Sorry to gatecrash your post OP, but I've been looking at Seasalt cardigans (merino&nylon). Does anyone know if they're fairly accurate for size, how well they wear and what sleeve lengths are like (I usually have to turn back a little, so obviously don't want anything too long for a size 8).

Meadowfinch · 21/10/2026 08:58

I like their dresses, well made and usually natural fabrics but they are cut for those who are 5'5" - 5'6" so on me (5'8") the waists are too high.

Thank you, I've just realised that's the problem with me (5'7"), not simply that I've got big boobs so the top of the dress hangs badly as it strains over my "balcony".
I like their stuff, I've got a brilliant raincoat which makes a lovely noise (something to do with Cornish tin mines?) when I move around. (Not necessarily everyone's criterion for a raincoat, I understand.)

I've got big boobs and need to get a size up for the cardigans to fit properly, which means the arms are quite long but I'm able to turn the cuffs up and then they're fine.

Nothungrycat · 22/10/2026 09:38

They're having a lot of sales at the moment, which means it's easy to pick up a bargain! I personally steer away from the prints, but quite like the trousers, as they seem to work with my body shape. I'd say they were fairly true to size/maybe slightly on the large size.

seanconneryseyebrow · 22/10/2026 09:42

RampantIvy · 22/10/2026 00:44

Maybe they look like that on you.

The few Seasalt clothes I have don't make me look like an old, frumpy geography teacher. I steer clear of the heavily patterned designs and I am tall and slim and the cut and length seem to suit my shape.

Im tall and slim too so trying to say I must look frumpy in them because Im fat isnt true. The clothes themselves are aging. Its not agist to say things look aging or frumpy. Are we denying that is even a thing? Clothes can be frumpy and make us look older - just as some clothes can be more youthful and make us look younger. OP asked for an opinion on Seasalt. I gave it. Its style and beauty afterall.

I think its grosly overpriced, overly marketed wank that makes women in their 50s look 70. Im allowed to think that, and Im sure there are outliers. You may be one of them who rocks the look.

Im sure there are people who think I dress too young, too try-hard, too 90s for my age. Thats fine. Opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one. :)

Re sizing - for skirts and dresses generous!

I ordered a rain jacket on line and had to come down 3 sizes!

Screamingabdabz · 22/10/2026 08:10

I can’t stand this ageist attitude. Some of the younger trends are objectively quite frumpy and dumpy too (baggy beige leisure wear, clumpy trainers, barrel jeans and boxy oversized jackets).

I do like seasalt quality but I do wish the prints were a bit more sophisticated and less drab.

Because young people are ....YOUNG. and usually very thin. Of course young slim girls can wear big baggy clothes and look awesome and not 'frumpy and dumpy' because of youth! Pretty obvious really.

When you are older, even when thin, you have to be more careful not to wear things that age you. Or not if you don't care. But denying frumpy is even a thing is daft. Im in my 50s. If I wore a Seasalt baggy floral dress, wellies and barbour/quilted jacket Im going to look 10 years older than when I wear my levis, docs/cons, and a polo neck. Just a fact. Doesnt mean it matters but its a reality.

BrandiedAromatics · 22/10/2026 10:05

Doesn't suit me except for excellent stripey, socks = Long Fluffies - comfortable and wear well in wellies. Great as a stocking filler - or a stocking!

Seasidewalker · 22/10/2026 10:25

I like Seasalt, mid 50's, 5ft 3, 14ish. I've got a lot of their Breton style tops, they have nice 3/4 sleeve versions that are wearable with hoodies or cardis. They wash and hang dry nicely. I also have a number of the appletree tshirt tops which are mainly plain and bright which i like.

Their knitwear looks fab currently, I hadn't realised it was hand-wash but I was put off by a seasalt jumper a couple of years ago that I followed the wash instructions but it shrunk on the first wash - there was no issue with a return and refund.

Their summer crops are nice, I've also got some waterdance trousers which I'm a bit undecided about! The autumn/ winter trousers didn't appeal when I was in store.

The patterns vary, occasionally one really catches my eye but they often aren't my thing.

I've got a 10 year old patterned tunic top which I still wear and it's been washed loads. I find the newer tunic tops too long for me.

The dresses tend not to work for me, even in petite the styles tend to look like I've borrowed them from my taller sister! I haven't tried all of them though so might have been unlikely.

White Stuff has some lovely stuff at the moment and do a petite range.

Re frumpy geography teacher vibes...my friend is a teacher (not geography sadly) and swears by Seasalt coats as "playground coats!).

Thank you! What are thoughts on the Sailor Shirt? Is it a slim or boxy fit?
https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/sailor-striped-breton-top

The Easel tee shirts are more fitted and the Sailor shirts are a looser fit. I have bought from Seasalt regularly as the quality and pricing point are reasonable. However, I do wish they had more fitted options and offered lighter colours/less garish prints. I feel like they have far fewer options for people who can't carry strong colours. Mind you, I find that with quite a few companies.

And thank you for your snippy comment and voice policing.

If OP had said, 'Please tell me about Seasalt. Positive comments only' then fair enough. She didn't. I will express whatever opinion I like thanks.

DavyCrockettsWildFrontEar · 22/10/2026 11:48

I agree about their knitwear pilling like an absolute bastard. It's warm and soft and when it's new it looks nice but frankly I don't want to have to spend hours shaving it every bloody time I wear it, so I've stopped buying it. Their other stuff (t-shirts, cord and linen dresses) has worn pretty well, though.

Grapewrath · 22/10/2026 11:59

The quality is nice but the sizing is huge imo and I don’t know if it’s my shape but I find they look really frumpy and aging
I’m a size 8/10 and 46 for context

ArmyGirl845 · 22/10/2026 12:02

OsfameronTanamoril · 21/10/2026 07:39

I like their jackets and coats. Not their prints.

This. A lot of their prints look like "eccentric old lady" to me, but the plain stuff is quite nice

Gravygranules · 22/10/2026 12:24

I think the plain stuff is nice whereas my mum likes the patterned clothes! I do think their sizing is a nightmare though, I've got jumpers from there in a 16, and trousers in a 10. I'm not even large chested and I'm usually a size 12. I did try on a t-shirt over the summer and it was very thin material, I think the quality isn't what it used to be.

I think you can critique the style of the brand without quite obviously punching down on its demographic. Older women already get enough shit as it is.

AgentPidge · 22/10/2026 13:00

I have a pair of their trousers - not the cheapest but they are a gorgeous colour, good cut and very well made ( linen mix). They look great and I've worn them loads. I tried on a jacket in store and it was huge - I'm a 12 and the 8 fitted me (Gap used to be the same). So I would say they do some good basics but have a look at the reviews re the sizing.

Round here, everyone wears Seasalt, old and young. I can spot their prints a mile off.

RaraRachael · 22/10/2026 13:03

I want to like Seasalt stuff but find it expensive and frumpy. I was in there on Tuesday and there was a nice blouse but it was £60 so well above what I'd pay.

It gives me retired teacher vibes - and before anyone accuses me of being ageist, I'm a retired teacher.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 22/10/2026 13:07

It’s deeply frumpy attire…..but the Janelle coat is the best winter dog walking coat there is. And I will die on that hill 🤣

Wouldn’t catch me in the jauntily printed tops though…

I honestly don't see what's frumpy about the Janelle.
It's a raincoat like any other raincoat. No special distinguishing features. It's long, yes but I am tall.

Yes, I agree.

I'm in my 50s. Sometimes I might well wear an oversized floral dress, wellies and outdoor jacket (admittedly not Seasalt), when I'm out on site. Other days I might wear Levi's, chunky boots & a thick polo neck. I don't suddenly age overnight when I wear the former.

I like their ethos. I like their rollneck menswear jumpers for my partner (he wears them constantly in winter & they've worn well). I like the look of their plain linens & woollens but do find the cut a bit dowdy at times, & their skirts always seem to be cut too short. So I would agree that some of their cuts/lengths could do with a bit of a refresh. And most of their prints I dislike - but when they get it right with a print it's really good, so I find it strange that the same design team produces both!

So it's a cut & length thing that means I don't buy from there for myself - but I do have a couple of their skirts saved on Vinted/eBay & am thinking about it!

Maybe the dislike comes from the fact that a lot of people seem to dress head-to-toe in it, often in their more distinctive (& slightly dated-looking) prints - & a lot dress in the tunic/leggings combination, which I do think is decidedly dated?

LancashireButterPie · 21/10/2026 11:14

I told my DD I'd found a nice top in there and she said "oh no, you aren't old enough for that yet, Mum".
I'm retired.
It's put me off.

I’m retired and I agree with your DD. A lot of it is good quality and comfortable, but dare I say the f word?

Fairyliz · 22/10/2026 13:18

RampantIvy · 21/10/2026 11:23

That's just being silly. If you like the top just buy it.

I hate the prejudice I read on here about certain brands of clothing and footwear. DD (26) has a Seasalt skirt. She doesn't hold preconceived ideas about some brands being only for old people because she is open minded.

I like the quality of Seasalt, but don't always like their colours or patterns. They currently have some beautiful knitwear in, but as most of it is hand wash only I shan't bother.

Well at 26 I expect your daughter is slim, with a youthful glow and really rocks the librarian look.
In my 60’s with a podgy middle and a grey face I look the opposite of stylish.
