I bought a dark green Janelle due to MN hype, and the first day I wore it I was in the supermarket passing an elderly woman in the same one. I’m in my 40s. She looked great, but after that happened a couple more times, I just didn’t feel good in it. It just felt like an older woman coat. I know lots of you won’t like that but it’s how I felt and I’m not evil <hides before they all come for me>
Plus I didn’t find it great quality - the material in the pockets was thin so quickly wore a hole which the dog poo bags and keys kept falling into.

So what should women 50-70 be wearing to avoid appearing frumpy and older?

Dare I say - whatever you want?

I'm always surprised at the disagreements on a Seasalt thread!

But hand wash only!

Not so. They wash fine in the wool cycle in my machine.

I love their Makers jumpers. Not wool, and they wash so well.

I love that they have so many cotton options in their knitwear. I can't wear artificial fabrics, and find wool itchy. Consequently I have several Makers jumpers, several Knavock light knitted tops (stripey and plain) and several Vanessa summery cardigans!

Thanks to this thread I discovered the EBay outlet, and I’ve ordered a unicorn summer dress. I’m always on the lookout for unicorn summer dresses. I have a medical condition which means I have to cover up in sunshine, so my unicorn summer dress is: natural fibres, sleeves to just above the elbow at least, a button up collar to cover my neck and decolletage, long enough to shelter my calves, lose enough to have some airflow. And I really would like it to have some shape to it and some colourfulness. See? A unicorn.

So I’m really delighted to find a unicorn. And I couldn’t give a monkey’s if I’m fashionable or frumpish or stylish or dated or whatever.

OneNewEagle · 23/10/2026 00:02

I’m an 18 I usually size up. I tend to order five dresses in one go maybe keep one as I find the sizing cute difficult to get on with.

I completely agree with you FWIW. My own mum wouldn't be caught dead in Seasalt.

I had one Seasalt dress in my 20's that looked quite cute and indie, but stopped wearing it by my 30's because I caught sight of my reflection looking like a tired 1950's housewife. (This one)

I can see it looking cute on my art student goddaughter. But otherwise, I prefer this sort of 50s fashion ...

1950s has become my favourite fashion decade. Those housewives knew a thing or two about fabulous style and quality.

TheRealSmurfette · 23/10/2026 07:35

Their prints are horrendous.
Good waterproof coats / jackets
Natural materials
Nice quality fabric
All quiet middle aged and dowdy looking though imo

Thank you! What are thoughts on the Sailor Shirt? Is it a slim or boxy fit?
https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/sailor-striped-breton-top

I agree with @MujeresLibres that they're true to size. I have one on at the moment, the sleeves are the right length on me and the fit is excellent, not figure hugging and I'm not skinny! The washing instructions seem to say don't machine wash, but I buy a size up and use a 30 degree machine wash and they tend to tighten up. I don't tumble dry. The colours don't really fade noticeably.

ccccccccc · 23/10/2026 09:47

RogueFemale · 22/10/2026 23:15

Not so. They wash fine in the wool cycle in my machine.

I usually use a normal 30 degree wash, shorter not the "cotton" wash.

I live in Cornwall and wear what I can afford from Seasalt sales but if I could afford it I’d have all the cord trousers and jeans, socks, wool jumpers at least. I needed a long, waterproof coat and chose the Plant Hunter whose hood actually stays on my head and keeps me warm and dry. I love colour, so find the amazing choice of different colours makes me happy. I like the fact that there are dresses and skirts for different shapes and these are used every season but made from a variety of colours and prints. I love the artist prints and colour palettes because they reflect the land, sea and sky scapes of Cornwall as well as the wild flowers. They don’t always suit me though all over so I might buy a handy band or scarf to add that print to my wardrobe. I can’t see myself getting rid of anything I’ve bought because of the price, I have to really love it and therefore wear it. I made a mistake with a cotton wrap dress, the sleeves looked silly and puffy and the crossover top was too small for my boobs.
Practical advice: If choosing petite, you might need to size up. Some clothes can vary in size too. I tried on a pair of regular length wide trousers and could easily have fitted into one leg, so a petite would have worked better, but other regular trousers and jeans were fine! The elasticated Scholl cords did not suit my shape either. My dd is 23 and loves a lot of vintage styles and there’s a lot that she likes too: wide leg trousers with side buttons, fair aisle knitwear etc

@HatStickBoots Yes, it's the colour that I love too, so many clothes are just dull.

I buy from M&S or Seasalt mail order and try several sizes. I'm afraid their trousers don't suit me - few of this year's trousers from any fashion retailers look great on most people over 25. Hopefully next year things will be different.
If I find something that I like I'll buy a few the same, people must think that I have a very limited wardrobe as Seasalt clothes often last for years. But do I care? No.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 23/10/2026 10:26

I love Seasalt. Their raincoats are particularly wonderful, keeping me perfectly dry without being too bulky and hot. As a 46 year old struggling with health issues I can’t stand being too hot. I can see that some of their stuff might be considered frumpy by some but it’s like everything else you can pick and choose the pieces you like. Their jumpers and t shirts are brilliant quality.

Spaniels4Eva · 23/10/2026 10:30

I've got a Janelle rain coat that is absolutely banging - it comes over the top of my wellies so you're kept completely dry even in a complete downpour like this morning. It's now languishing over the heated airer so it's dry again for round 2 later Hmm

I find the cotton stuff washes well, knitwear less so but I've got loads of colourful tunics that I wear with leggings. Very on a par with White Stuff. I'm 56, grey haired, never wear make up, on a good day brush my hair and no longer give a fuck what I look like as long as I'm comfy!

Floisme · 23/10/2026 10:48

And I'm 70, grey haired, rarely wear make up, haven't brushed my hair for 50 years and I care very much what I look like, particularly how I dress and I still enjoy fashion..

We're all different, regardless of age. Who knew?!

But I can't let the Janelle love go unchallenged. I really dislike mine. It actually depresses me when the weather drives me into wearing it. Unfortunately it's also a bloody effective coat, dammit.

Piglet89 · 23/10/2026 10:54

I have a Seasalt raincoat. The zips on the pockets went after about a year, the zip at the front after about 3 or 4 and the pocket seam ripped after a short time too. For the price, they just aren’t hard wearing enough and I wouldn’t buy the brand again.

It's Cate Blanchett in one of my favourite films, Carol - where the costume design was fabulous.

I wasn't saying that I dressed like that*, & I don't wear real fur. However, I admire the aesthetics & the commitment to glamour. And, of course, the fact that Cate Blanchett looks utterly luminous (with very little face powder, I would say).

*I would quite like to rock that look on a site visit one day, just for the shock value ... Much more satisfying than hard hat & hi viz jacket!!!

I thought it was from The Talented Mr Ripley, which also has great 50s fashions. I wear the high waisted trousers in daily life, but pencil skirts are not great for the Tube.

OsfameronTanamoril · 22/10/2026 17:30

I was thinking that I have yet to find an alternative for my Seasalt Larissa shirt for travel in warm and humid countries. I don't think it's particularly stylish and it's probably geography teacher, but it's pure cotton, rolls up in a ball, doesn't need to be ironed, doesn't show stains, doesn't show cleavage, and can be tossed in the wash.

I recently bought a Seasalt dress for a trip abroad for exactly these reasons - organic cotton, lightweight (but covers shoulders and knees for a conservative country), no ironing, easy to wash, light pattern so doesn't show sweatstains. It even has pockets. I looked everywhere for something like that and it's like searching for hens' teeth. It's not ultra fashionable but it's flattering on me and I got compliments on it.

People always used to talk of "being old before your time" - which applied to different aspects of your life. We may feel, quite rightly, we do not want to write off people who happen to be of mature years but is it not natural to reflect as @itstoolateforsnacks has? Particularly as she also had a problem with the pockets not being robust enough for her use?
