WWW's 10 year younger bootcamp, July 2008

WideWebWitch · 29/06/2008 20:46

Hello everyone, old and new.

This is about feeling better about yourself and looking and feeling better etc. But mainly we chat and laugh quite a lot, which has all got to help towards happiness etc.

The rules (anyone can join):

  • Sunscreen at all times - REALLY mean this now summer is here.
  • No or little booze. Wine or Champagne or whatever at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

Some people are doing India and Neris's Idiot Proof Diet (Atkins, more or less), others are doing Slimy World, others are just being as healthy as possible.

Welcome everyone, have a good week.

L&S

I hope it is ok - it was a long time ago (was pg with dd2 who's now 5) and certainly didn't feel like worst horned hoof offender...

marina, I too have been having hate-moments re: Certain Girls in dd1's year..gggrrrrrrrr for you AND me! Whooosh! there they go in puff of smoke

marvellous nipple news, pru. and the pre-school stuff. I feel your pain..

batters that coat is to die for. get it, pronto.

yoyo · 02/07/2008 16:24

Batters - love the coat! I have clothes in many sizes and am not even sure what size I am anymore. I grab armfuls when I try things on (which is rare as I hate clothes shopping). I need to find "my" shop so that I don't spend hours staring at rails.

Marina - think that dress is fab. No idea about the headwear though. Ignore comments from child and her parent - you are doing really well.

WWW - sorry your week is dragging along and that your arguments with DS continue. Homework and revision have been the main topics of argument with DD1 especially as we are now paying for her education. She has to do work over the summer too. Deep joy.

Arfishy - have always wanted to go to Fiji. Very envious. Please post some pics for us to gawp at.

yoyo · 02/07/2008 16:28

Bootcamp going very well this week. Have been to the gym every day since Sunday and have played tennis. Am aching a bit now though and I have an early session with trainer tomorrow. Feeling virtuous apart from couple of glasses of wine each night. Can't remember who said it but I too sleep much more poorly even after only a glass of wine.
Lots of mundane stuff to plough through now but have had a really nice day so mustn't complain.

eemie · 02/07/2008 16:30

Marina, I find it amazing that I can dislike some of dd's friends (or any little girl) as much as I do.

A kind child in her reception class told her 'My Mum says your Mum looks more like a Granny than a Mummy'. Seeing how much I dreaded her being teased about my age, it ate away at me for weeks.

They're not all Yummy Mummies round our way, there are quite a few grey hairs. Among the younger mums (with low slung jeans and thongs showing) a surprising number are morbidly obese.

Still, I decided I had to rise above it, otherwise dd will be picking up the message that what other people think about the way we look is important - or more important than I'd like it to be!

(But Heaven knows when I'll be able to stop colouring my hair)

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/07/2008 17:43

Hello you lot. Too much to catch up on properly, I did start but lost the will to live part way down. Not that it's ever boring of course just that my head is full of other stuff.

Just a comment on your work life balance www - it sounds like it's been particularly hellish over the last few months. We had some tough choices to make some years ago when dd was small; they weren't really choices at all in lots of ways and at first I was very unsettled. But I look around now and know that some people would kill to have the balance we have. I am so lucky (although I'd probably be judged on the wider MN for still working term time when I have older children lol).

I've had the mother of all headaches since Saturday - probably a mix of booze, stress and lack of sleep. Ds2 is OK, thanks for thinking of him. We've kept him in his work/college routine which is what he needs. He has to do an ID thing next week so fingers crossed it goes well.

Bad knee is back with a vengance but I've kept on at the gym just doing weights and hopefully it will improve again soon. End of term approaching so work is very busy but in 3 weeks time I'll be on the beach in Portugal. Can't wait!

WideWebWitch · 02/07/2008 19:27

Hello everyone

stress a go go due to ds's teacher telling DS that we're 'pushing him too hard' !!! Thanks for the support mate. Anyway, another thread on it, any advice welcome.

Arfy, where's the picture, hmm?

Pru, wish I could meet oyu and yer norks but will be on way home.

work has been tedious today, I really don't have much to do and it's DRAGGING. But hey, I MUST stop whinging and just get on with it! Typed out 'reasons to be cheerful' and that made me happier!

Today
mackeral pate bleurgh
salami, cambozola
smoked salmon and cream cheese wraps
brazil nuts
lots of water
vitamins
sunscreen
and having lamb burgers, spinach and blue cheese for supper

want wine.
won't have it
Roll on Friday

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 02/07/2008 19:35

Saggars, glad your ds is getting over it. at work/life balance. Next year, next year. I haven#t had a choice this year really but I must just be pleased that I DO have the ability to earn what I do thus bringing solvency to the WWW household.

Yoyo, eww at work over summer, me too. Deep joy here too. And at Batters house! I hate shopping, hence online forays. Although I just realised I bought underwear from La Senza online at weekend and I make BAD decisions when I have pmt, bet it's vile and has to go back.

L&S, I was thinking of you this afternoon and your weightloss, hope you find somerthing that works for putting it on. wine and carbs does it for me as you know!

Eemie, that must be annoying, are these parents stupid? Don't they KNOW it all gets repeated? I'd be tempted to make up something amusing for her to repeat back, can't think what yet. Bundle and MArina, sympathy to you two too on that front. Fuckers.

Hi Lizzer, feetheart!

Bama, how lovely that you can get online in the library! But not good for work, I agree!

Duch, good luck on the trip tomorrow.

sorry to anyone I missed

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 02/07/2008 19:38

Hola.

I bought the Idiot Proof diet book thingy on www's suggestion earlier in the week, and have just had shopping delivered so am going to give it go starting tomorrow, so am indulging 9on one last carb fest today.

Tjose who are doing it, how are you finding it? I am worried about life without potatoes. I am a carboholic - but as I suffer horribly with IBS, I think it will help me. Also, will I get terribly spotty in the first few days??

WideWebWitch · 02/07/2008 19:40

Sheik, I am loving it and have not deviated ONE IOTA from it APART from having wine at weekends and on 2 occasions, in the week. Because I'm eating food I like I'm not remotely tempted to eat anything I'm not supposed to. And hey, I can live without sugar and carbs. Once you're further on in the diet you can have the odd carby thing.

I am never hungry. The first few days are tough but after that it's fine ime.

Good luck. The results are v good and you won't feel like you're on a diet if you are antything like me.

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 02/07/2008 19:42

I was the (decaf) coffee with double cream that sold it to me.

I actually can't wait to start it. I looked at myself today and though "I'm never going to look this terrible again!"

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 02/07/2008 20:00

I am still trembling at the idea of having nipples cut off and resewn, like they were mere nametapes. But I'll plough on with post.

pru - I'm standing down as Chair in September and I can't wait! But I know exactly what I'll do with my spare time.

Today was tiring but went fairly smoothly (excepting the idiot parents who turn up for the coach at 9.15am despite having not booked or paid for any seats ). Rain held off until after lunch by which time the children were in play barn, it was short and light rain anyway so no matter.

I've eaten cereal for breakfast; marmite sandwich, apple, Hula Hoops & raisins for lunch and chicken livers with bacon & pinenuts with spinach and mash for dinner followed by cherry pie & cream. Lots of water. One coffee.

Sunscreen, moisturiser & hand cream done. Will make effort to slap on lots of Flexitol before bed.

Finally going to register Archies birth tomorrow. Still stuck on middle names. DH thinks Hector James? Vote now...

WideWebWitch · 02/07/2008 20:36

I like Hector James v much

Sheik, I think all the stuff in the book about how we got fat is vv good too.

OP posts:
Marina · 02/07/2008 20:54

Evening all
Have not lost or gained this week. Given I had pizza and a fair bit of wine and a Mars icecream or two at the weekend, that's not so bad
Must do better next week
Thanks all for kind feedback on odious small child - was gobsmacked at some of the other remarks people have received
It's a much derided attitude on Mn at large but we as a family live by, "if you cannot say anything pleasant/positive, don't say anything at all" (as far as unsolicited opinions are concerned ) so hearing such firm and bleak judgements from people not long out of nappies is a bit disconcerting. Eemie, I am an older mum and am very silvery/russetty, having decided against dyeing as my hair quite suits me this way. The grandma thing haunts me too, I'm so sorry.
We are all gorgeous and becoming more so with every passing week
WWW, sorry the week is dragging. Am wondering if your teacher is related to ours
Saggars - do hope ds is gradually regaining his equilibrium, good to see you back again
Listen all, for a small fee I will deliver an independent verdict for bootcamp on prunorks' new look, on Friday morning after we have had a coffee tomorrow pm. I promise not to make her laugh too much
Glad you survived the Mother of all Trips Duchess and Archard Hector James sounds perfect
Welcome back Feetheart and good luck with the ladies in white orthopaedic sandals and white coast L&S, it all sounds a bit Barbara Flynn in A Very Peculiar Practice
Yoyo, you sound as though you are making cracking progress, well done
And good luck on the IPD Sheik
Today - walking, water, cream, healthy eating - yy
Tomorrow is Another Day

WideWebWitch · 02/07/2008 21:12

Marina, standing still is good, especially as pizza and wine were involved. So I think you should pat yourself on the back for that

OP posts:
eemie · 02/07/2008 21:15

I remember, Marina, I met you once. It does suit you.

I'm not exactly a ruin (altho' not feeling too good about myself atm). Under the hair colour, though, I'm really snow white - not because I'm v. old (though I am) but because I'm a true Celt. Started going white at 19, like my father.

There was a girl in my NCT group who was young enough to be my daughter (and was mistaken for my daughter on more than one occasion) but who wouldn't take her dd swimming because she was too embarrassed about being fat. It made me feel glad I'm old enough and ugly enough not to care - dd adores swimming.

And she (dd) still thinks I'm beautiful, so all's well really

It's hardgoing this week isn't it folks? What is it with these 9-11 year olds?

Frustrating Marina, but everyone's right, staying the same is ok. Keep up the good work. How's your dad? at little minx. I don't automatically go for blaming the parent, but I think I can make an exception...

How sad is the society we live in that a woman feels unable to do an activity (that will enhance your fitness) because she's fat?

Blimey Duchess, glad the trip was a success. I particularly like James (it has connections for me), but the whole shebang has a ring to it.

Pru. oooh. I'm still wincing, lol.

Hope the headache improves saggars, and DS remains ok.

You're doing great yoyo.

Arfy. Fiji. . Cousin got married their a couple of years ago.

Sheik, I'm not doing IPD for various reasons, but found the book really helpful.

Bama - have you got those words done yet? hmm?

Good to hear about your friend's little girl Batters. Yes, the juggling....the joys.

Yes, the job does impact in all sorts of unexpected ways. I've had this theory about the school for years, (The primary Head was totally bemused when we shared it with him about four years ago) but last night was the first time I realised just how real the theory could be.

LoveAndSqualor · 02/07/2008 22:32

zooming through, but a big thumbs up to hector james - lovely. Good strong names.

and Marina - rofl at A Very Peculiar Practice. Will now be disappointed if the strains of 'We Love You' are not to be heard in the background as my feet are abraded to cleanliness

unknownrebelbang · 02/07/2008 22:37

  • Sunscreen yy.
  • No booze.
  • 2 mile hike + twister
  • Lots of water/weak tea.
  • Apply body cream no.
  • Use hand cream lax.
  • Go to bed early, midnightish.
  • Eat healthily. Good day today.
  • Be happy. Same old same old.

DS3 has been off school today with a cough and temperature. Of course, he was fine this afternoon .

Work was ...erm...rather tense today. I have a colleague who appears to be synching with www et al. Almost posted about her four weeks ago - she was on fire and very amusing in her fury. Alas, she just appeared stressed today, although she did seem to recover her sense of humour later. Another colleague burst into tears, and the boss was also blardy temperamental. Did consider running off midmorning, lol.

, just remembered I need to buy a get well card for another colleague too.

feetheart · 03/07/2008 07:02

Huge sympathies and at judgemental small girls (and their parents) I too am older mum and my initial reason for joining bootcamp last year was to ensure I did NOT look my age when DD started Reception in September. Hopefully I achieved that inspite of regularly jumping off the wagon! Have had the 'Grandma' comment twice in past 5 yrs and do slightly live in dread of DS starting school as we will all be another 2 years older by then
Eemie - I too have the Celtic greyness but have managed to dye it into submission so far

DofN - glad trip went well and not at all surprised at the cheek/stupidity of some people. James has special place for us too, agree that Archie Hector James is a wonderfully strong name.

feetheart · 03/07/2008 07:07

Sunscreen - forgot!
No booze/sweet things (my downfall!) - did OK, only 2 home-made biscuits and turned down home-made ice-cream though it was 10pm
Walking - 7500 steps so not brilliant
Water - more than usual but still not enough
Body cream - yes
Hand cream - forgot
Go to bed early - 10.30pm
Eat healthily - not bad though lots of pizza as DD had friend for tea and we always make pizza (may be rod for own back in years to come!)
Be happy - feeling busy and bit stressed but we'll get there

WideWebWitch · 03/07/2008 12:35

Hi all. Well, here I am having discovered trick on another thread of writing my posts in Word and then pasting them quick before anyone looks at my screen and realises I?m mumsnettng. Have set to ?sober workplace? AND have a privacy screen on my monitor so this is belt and braces but there you go. I have been v v good about not mnettng from work for years and years but have now decided it?s ok since I am not remotely busy any more. After all the stress it?s lovely. I do like my boss and the job?s not hard and the money?s good and the commute?s ok these days so life is good really.

Feetheart, at sunscreen! Use it! But well done on turning down ice cream. I even made caramel ice cream with the children at the beginning of this diet and resisted it. Well done at achieving not looking your age, how old are you? Lots of us fortysomethings on this thread I think. DD starts in Sept too and I really don?t want to look the oldest. Not that I?m ever there but ykwim!

OMG unknown at colleague with PMT. Do you know it is or are you guessing? I really try to temper my reactions at work as am aware of it as have started diarising as otherwise it?s not fair to my team and colleagues!

This week is hard going isn?t it? Glad it?s not just me!

Batters, mucho sympathy on dd, as you know I?ve had it in spades. Dh and I locked ourselves out of the house (eg locked ds IN!) with glasses of cold wine last Friday, could that work for you? J

Sheik, how are you doing? Have you started? Did you enjoy the carb fest? I acknowledge that IPD isn?t for everyone, absolutely, but I like it so far.

It?s nearly Friday everyone!

Today
3 chipolatas
few pieces of salami
some Bavarian smoked cheese
am eating a salad with raw spinach, fresh anchovies, tuna, quail eggs, tomatoes, cucumber and vinaigrette
tonight we?re having rare roast beef, can?t wait!
Was in bed by 10.30 last night
Used sunscreen this morning
Have had lots of water
And vitamins
Work fine as above and I got some great great advice about ds and the 11+ on here last night, thanks to everyone who posted, it was SO helpful. Mn comes into its own for concerns like that I find!

SheikYerbouti · 03/07/2008 12:42

Well, so far so good.

Have just got in from work. Had bacon and eggs for breakfast and just nibbled on come chorizo and olives while I wait for eggs to boil for Niçoise Salad.

Had 3 cups of decaf coffee at work with double cream and NO SUGAR AND I ENJOYED IT (breakthrough, I like sugar in coffee)

WideWebWitch · 03/07/2008 12:43

well done Sheik!

OP posts:
bamamama · 03/07/2008 12:45

Hello all, just swiftly passing through as I too shouldn't be here. Not at work but DH is doing that eyebrow-raising-chuffing-MN-grumbling again.

Far too much wine last night - had 3 of DHs students round who cooked us a fabulous dinner (they owed us dinner they aren't after fast track PhD's!). However, much wine was consumed so lots of water today.

Not a bad day otherwise, loads of walking, relatively healthy food and no wine this evening

I have been super organised and made tomorrows lunches for everyone - we're having spinach in our salads in honour of WWW (but don't tell dh where I get my ideas from ).

Will catch up with everyone soon.
