Are Lucy and Yak dungarees seen as hippy or just stylish?

Saw someone wearing some loose shorts dungarees, I think Lucy & yak, and they looked really nice (uk holiday). I’m tempted to- but they are not my normal style, I tend to go for more of a ‘classic’ (aka simple but boring - tidy basically and navy/white/jewel pink or blue) style, so when I looked at the website I thought that maybe I’m not the target audience. But I have been following the ‘glow up’ thread and feeling more confident in making bolder choices.

So my question is - is there a stereotype or any negative association with Lucy and Yak dungaree wearers? Is it a bit hippy / lentil weaving? I am not! I know this doesn’t matter etc and I should just wear them if like them but the website was very off putting!!

I think the stereotype, if there is one, is probably middle class toddler mums. Every baby group I went to was awash with them! I even bought some too and then realised that I do not suit dungarees at all. None of that is any reason not to buy some though if you like them!

Neither I’d say. They’re just a bit naff. Very 2012 when that ‘mother’ sweatshirt was a thing.

I’ve got two of their playsuits and I’ve taken the label off. I like them but I don’t necessarily want people to know that they are from Lucy and yak.

To me, they are upper middle class hooray Henry super woke.

Ah, my toddlers are late teens and I’m definitely not woke 🤣. 2012 was a good time though!

I've got a Lucy & Yak mini pinafore in a 60s style print that I really like. I now get emails from them (in fairness not excessively, they don't spam as much as some retailers) and I would say their brand ethos is very 'woke' if that makes sense - you might expect devotees of the brand to have blue hair, be vegans and Green Party voters type of thing.

I'm not really that type of person but it wouldn't bother me if people thought I was. I wear clothes I love and it doesn't bother me what people might think, but I've reached middle age and run out of fucks to give about that sort of thing 😅

I associate them with peers who were ‘emos’ when we were teenagers who are now middle aged, middle class parents with respectable jobs but who still see themselves as ‘alternative’.
Some of the prints remind me of things my somewhat batshit but very lovely high school art teacher used to wear so I avoid for that reason - I definitely cannot carry off ‘batshit art teacher’ style 😂

Neither. Not stylish but not especially hippy. Worn by people who don't care about style just like to be comfortable.

I am not stylish at all, and enjoy wearing my sage coloured ones with white trainers whilst running after my toddler. Does this make me a stereotype? 😅

My mum, who also has no style (like, really, no style at all) has found them and really enjoys them - and though not stylish, looks and feels much better than she used to.

I can’t say I’ve ever thought they were stylish at all. Like PP said, the only people I ever see wear them are mums of very small children. They don’t look horrendous but I’d never expect to see them outside the context of hanging out with small kids.

I don't think dungarees can ever really be stylish.

My first thought was, they are not about style. They are for people who are actively uninterested in style.

I like them. Comfortable, practical and fun.

I can't help but think over-grown toddler when I see someone in a Lucy and Yak outfit. That or Teletubby 🙈

My thoughts exactly! Definitely not stylish. Quite the opposite.

To me, they have that ‘I want to look as awful as I possibly can’ vibe.

They are somehow both ugly and basic, yet also try-hard and too much 😂

I have their black linen barrel trousers, and some other black ones, and some leopard ones. The waistband is huge and makes me lumpy (,shirred waistband maybe?) BUT so comfy in peri... The leopard ones feel a bit too much like pyjamas and I have to be in the right mood for them.

The other prints aren't for me, I think I see them as more studenty ((ironic as I bet a lot of students can't afford them). Every style of their trousers seem to make my hips look twice as big, not necessarily a bad thing.

They remind me of the sort of clothes A level students hide behind in lieu of developing a personality. DM boots, blue hair, nose piercing etc. Lucy & Yak dungarees are the adult equivalent of Colin Hunt’s novelty tie.

I have definitely been put off!! I was expecting a more varied response but the consensus seems to be clear!

Just wear what you like OP! Doesn't matter if the vast majority of mumsnet hates it or loves it. I have just one pair of dungarees from Lucy and Yak (these ones) and they are the comfiest item of clothing I own. Not a fan of their prints, but think they look fun on some people.

I really don't think Lucy & Yak are for any particular demographic - their whole thing is that they are a very inclusive brand and that anyone can wear them.

If you like them, wear them. They're all over the place and really quite mainstream these days. What did you find off putting about the website?

I think they're very Brighton.

The patterned ones in particular look kind of performative and I personally wouldn't wear them.
