Are Lucy and Yak dungarees seen as hippy or just stylish?

Saw someone wearing some loose shorts dungarees, I think Lucy & yak, and they looked really nice (uk holiday). I’m tempted to- but they are not my normal style, I tend to go for more of a ‘classic’ (aka simple but boring - tidy basically and navy/white/jewel pink or blue) style, so when I looked at the website I thought that maybe I’m not the target audience. But I have been following the ‘glow up’ thread and feeling more confident in making bolder choices.

So my question is - is there a stereotype or any negative association with Lucy and Yak dungaree wearers? Is it a bit hippy / lentil weaving? I am not! I know this doesn’t matter etc and I should just wear them if like them but the website was very off putting!!

I have a few Lucy and yak trousers. Mainly because I liked the pattern and fit. Definitely not for the name.

My friend wears these, she is 67, keeps chickens and sheep and spins their wool, lives in the Scottish Highlands. They suit her.

I kind of like dungarees in principle but in reality they look good on v few people. I know people can “ wear whatever they want” but to look stylish in them ( if that’s the aim here) you need to have a slimish boyish figure so that the dungarees hang off the straps and then skim everything else. Also helps to have toned arms. Dungarees and womanly curves = not a good look.

They are strange because I’ve seen people wearing them on here and have thought “oh they look nice on x poster and look very comfortable”. And then I have had a quick look at their website and thought “oh my god; these are really not my type of thing. How can that be?”

I'm trying to give up using words like 'stylish' and 'flattering' because I think they bestow far too much weight and gravitas upon what are basically nothing more than likes and dislikes. So I'm going to stick with, 'I don't like them'.

I've worn dungarees (admittedly a long time ago) so I'm not dead set against them all. But this brand? No. I don't like the fit. I don't like the colours. I don't like the prints. I particularly dislike the name and the logo. Which is absurd but there you are, you did ask.

And I'm not going to end with, 'If you like them, wear them' because it's bleeding obvious that you should do that.

Do not go there. The words "stylish" & "dungarees"* do not belong together ... ever! Ditto with "duffle coat" ...

*Especially Lucy & Yak dungarees! Awful name, awful website, bloody awful dungarees ...!!

Oh no, not duffle coats! I’ve always liked that Ali Macgraw in Love Story vibe.

Did she wear one in that? I vaguely remember peacoats & those belted 70s coats, but not a duffle coat - although if she did, I'll make an exception for Ali McGraw!

They can look ok, I think, if worn long & in neutral/darker colours. And I used to be quite fond of the nerdy-boy-in-specs-&-duffle-coat look when I was in my 20s!

But I dislike the toddler vibe that brightly coloured dungarees - & duffle coats!! - lend to adult women. I just find it a bit odd?

I might have to go watch Love Story again though - it's been many years ...!!!

I think she did - duffle coat when they were poor and then, when they had money, a camel wrap around? It’s fixed in my memory but I’ve not actually seen it for 50+ years and the more I think about it, the more I doubt myself. Great clothes though, but dreadful film. I’ll have to go and check now!

I love Lucy & Yak - but I'm a 36yo mum, make my own kombucha and regularly cook with pulses. Do with that knowledge what you will...

Lucy and Yak also used have a real eco conscious ethos. However, you can now find a lot of discussion by former employees saying that they were treated terribly, the quality is terrible and that whole ethos has gone out the window. Small things like they now send wrapped in plastic, the flash deals, dungarees that used to last ages now coming apart after a few months.
If you're one of those very few people that look good in dungarees I'd shop elsewhere.

I have loads of pairs, but I am a reception teacher. Make of that what you will.

I think the black ones can look quite stylish.

I had to go look. I think there's a surprisingly wide range of impressions they can give. Even just on the "dungarees" page of their site, the vibes range from functionally sleek with a little whimsy to Willow from Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series 1 to kitschy stylised adult toddler to full on clownish. Everything I checked was 100% organic cotton but the prices are definitely not hippie-friendly and most of the colours and patterns feel more ‘80s than ‘60s.

The Una in plain solid colours looks quite cool on their models, especially with a sleeveless T or tank, while the Chula and Toluca look more performative and exaggerated. Original, Ali, and Mullen look pretty classic. I actually really like the Red Zig Zag Stripe pattern (Arlo), but most of the other patterns are definitely peanut butter and carrot sticks territory.

You were never gonna get a positive response on Mumsnet where the default setting is snooty and sneering. I think Lucy and yak jumpsuits can look really cool personally.

I have quite a lot of Lucy & Yak, including boiler suits, dungarees, trousers, dresses, tops. I prefer Run & Fly prints but they are, sadly, no more.

People decrying it as not stylish or 'try hard' have missed the point rather. It is its own style, just like Seasalt and White Stuff is its own style. Just because it's not what you wear, doesn't mean it's not put together or deliberate. Likewise, people wearing clothes they like doesn't meant they are 'try hard', unless we're allowed to say the same about people in their chosen style. Surely, we're all dressing according to what we like and what suits our lifestyle.

I do have a nose piercing and wear DMs. Oh and I also wear a vintage yellow duffel coat in winter.

I really wish people could separate their own desire not to wear something from derision aimed at people who choose their own style of clothing.

I just went on the Run&Fly website, because I forgot they exist, and they look like they're still going? It was a venture that almost cost me £50 in new dresses😂

Sorry I should have been more specific. Atul, the founder of R&F very sadly passed away recently and his wife has committed to running it for "a while longer" in his memory.

Maybe it will continue but the tone in the last few months from people I know who similarly love their clothes is that it's winding up. I genuinely hope not of course. Fingers crossed.

The plainer stuff is ok but they seem to lean very much into the 'other' side of things. Like a previous poster said 'very tick boxy inclusion'.

People I see wearing them are usually a mix of

Overweight
'cool' hair think mullets, bright colours and super short fringes
Trans/lesbian/non-binary/an ally and feel like this needs to be announced
Wearing non ironic hideous glasses that millennial wouldn't be seen dead in
Usually wearing DM's
A vegan
None of these things are bad but it feels very performative like it's a uniform.

I have a similar pair of dungarees in black I made myself so I'm not against them. They are comfy. I am definitely not their target demographic though

I mean what is fashion if not a uniform of sorts? If you're into motorbikes and metal music, you'd probably be wearing a leather jacket and have a few piercings, if you're really into running you might wear more casual sportswear when not running like under armour, if you're into 'alternative lifestyles' then you might choose to wear 'alternative' clothes, if you want to look like money means something to you, you might choose designer brands.

Wear what you want.
