Are Lucy and Yak dungarees seen as hippy or just stylish?

Saw someone wearing some loose shorts dungarees, I think Lucy & yak, and they looked really nice (uk holiday). I’m tempted to- but they are not my normal style, I tend to go for more of a ‘classic’ (aka simple but boring - tidy basically and navy/white/jewel pink or blue) style, so when I looked at the website I thought that maybe I’m not the target audience. But I have been following the ‘glow up’ thread and feeling more confident in making bolder choices.

So my question is - is there a stereotype or any negative association with Lucy and Yak dungaree wearers? Is it a bit hippy / lentil weaving? I am not! I know this doesn’t matter etc and I should just wear them if like them but the website was very off putting!!

The tie-strap dungarees with a dropped crotch which make everyone look they have a full nappy are not stylish.

I have seen a few friends in the more fitted boiler-suit styles which are more stylish, although some of the patterns give 1970s curtains.

L&Y used to do nice denim and corduroy. I haven't worn them for years so I don't know if the quality is still there. I tried dungarees at the end of my 40s. I had two from Toast, one from L&Y and one from... What's that Brighton based shop? The L&Y ones were the most comfortable, but I did like like I was running late for my play date. The toast ones made me look like I was finally getting around to the redecorating. The ones from that Brighton shop were a thinner cotton, more fitted, and cropped. They looked so good over a button down blouse with a collar. They were a fabulous smart casual option that were much more "classic" than "play date/painter".

They're just currently fashionable. Not edgy or hippy. Just in at the moment.

It doesn't sound like fun if you are obsessing about whether to buy an item of clothing you're not sure you like just because you have seen some other woman wearing it.
Just why?

I was onky interested in this thread because ive always had a liking for dungarees. Never worn them myself because they wouldn't suit me. But I like to see other women wear them.

I was going to say neither stylish nor hippy, but now feel massively called out by this post as an elder emo with a respectable middle class job and L&Y dungarees (but not children…).

They’re comfy and 100% cotton which is why I have them, but now I wonder if there’s some deeper psychological “look at me I’m still alternative” driver behind it 😂

They are well made (or were), quality fabrics, and comfortable. I wear their cord dungarees for dog walking, absolutely ideal.

I also have a plain dark denim boiler suit which is a lot smarter, is fitted, and looks perfectly nice.

I am very much interested in fashion, and clothes generally, and whilst L&Y are not stylish, they have their place. They get my vote because they use good natural fabrics at a reasonable price point.

My mum who’s 85 wears them. However I’ve bought her some Nou Moon ones which are lighter fabric for the summer and I think better cut than the Lucy and Yak ones.

I think judging from people I know who wear them they’re practical (with younger kids) and can also be worn eg to the office on a casual day.

I have a pair, they're really comfortable and soft but probably not what you would call stylish! However I'm at the age where I don't care so much what people think. Also to the PP who said they would be good for IBS (presumably for bloating as they are loose around the waist?), they are comfortable for this but going to the bathroom is not a quick operation so maybe not ideal... (I don't wear them out if the toilets are likely to be manky as the straps are long and trailing!)

I have a plain black ‘flight suit’ type thing and one with a black background and flower print, but like a previous poster, have cut the label off. I also have some plain black jeans.
When I’m describing a particularly irritating SJW type woman of the same (middle) age as me on a course I did, who wanged on about decolonisation theory and all her ‘isms, I’m afraid I do use the term ‘Lucy and Yaked up’.
Their online presence includes morbidly obese people who I’m afraid don’t present the clothing in their best light, as well as carefully selected models who pretend to be of the opposite (or neither) sex.🙄
Some of the clothing looks like an accident in there CBeebies wardrobe department, but the plainer stuff is great quality and can look quite nice.

Thing is, I have always coveted a pair since my teens (the 80’s - Dexys Midnight Runners style) but have seen some seriously cute, embroidered/boho style ones that I can see me lounging around the house in. Am a (very) mature student and wondering whether I could get away with them when DH isn’t home!

Like you, though, whilst there is pretty much nothing I could, say or wear that would give DH the ick after nearly 35… those might cross the line!

I bought a green jumpsuit DH said I looked like Slipknot’s paramedic. Funny but I’ve never worn it since!

My sister would look great in them. She looks like a model and would make a bin bag look great. I would look like I have alzheimers and the nurses were trying to put things on me that I cant get off.

Dungarees and stylish don’t belong in the same sentence 🤣 Even in the 1980s, Diana couldn’t pull them off…

I agree with the bin bag comments. Even when I was much slimmer and looked great in most things, absolutely no dungarees worked (petite pear shape)

I once spent an entire afternoon while out a and about in Bristol pointing out Lucy and Yak wearers to my partner. I think I was feeling anti Bristol vibe that day and ranting about how wannabe bristol hipsters had no money but had to wear overpriced dungarees to prove a point calmed me down a bit. There are some rare pieces that can be styled well . We found one for my sister who is a Brightonian ,so fits the vibe but she refused to pay the full price. If you find something neutral go ahead and get it OP. People comment similarly for Boden or Fatface wearers but that doesn't mwan their whole catalogue is frumpy.

I’m sure they were cancelled a bit back! I think there was some furore over their sustainability claims and sizing being reduced? I’d have to do a deep dive to properly remind myself but I remember they came down a few rungs on that pedestal.

To me they give “performative woke toddler parent” vibes. The ones that just try so hard to show people how hands on and gentle parenting they are. Not stylish at all.

My SIL could wear L&Y as she’s a woke and gentle parent, but she’s not their target market.

Me and my DM used to love Boden back in 00 time (when they first came out) but went off them after a while. Can’t recall why.

I used to have some shorts dungarees like the ones on the website when I was 19. I loved them then but I would never wear them now - no they don't look stylish, more studenty/trying too hard to be trendy/the woke brigade. I would think paying a bit more for some well made and well cut dungarees or jumpsuit would fit better with the way you describe your usual style.
