Are Lucy and Yak dungarees seen as hippy or just stylish?

Saw someone wearing some loose shorts dungarees, I think Lucy & yak, and they looked really nice (uk holiday). I’m tempted to- but they are not my normal style, I tend to go for more of a ‘classic’ (aka simple but boring - tidy basically and navy/white/jewel pink or blue) style, so when I looked at the website I thought that maybe I’m not the target audience. But I have been following the ‘glow up’ thread and feeling more confident in making bolder choices.

So my question is - is there a stereotype or any negative association with Lucy and Yak dungaree wearers? Is it a bit hippy / lentil weaving? I am not! I know this doesn’t matter etc and I should just wear them if like them but the website was very off putting!!

i have some of their block colour trousers and they are very good.
The prints I’m less keen on.

I love my Lucy & Yak dungarees. I got one set on theirs ‘reyaked’ rail for £30 and was deeply happy, especially as they have proper pockets. I live in them! I am not a middle classed yummy mummy but a 62 year old garden lover who just has a regular office job. I have never woven a lentil in my life, although I do make biscuits with chickpeas. Pretty sure I am not a super woke hippy either. I like comfort, I long ago stopped worrying about what people thought of my clothes, and have a firm belief that if someone likes something and wants to wear it, to just wear it.

I think this really depends on the person and how you wear them. Think of Felicity Kendall looking super hot as Barbara Good in her dungarees- definitely not a children's entertainer. I would probably give the patterned ones a skip but why not try them and see whether they work on you?

The website looks like a mess of clown clothes and inclusive in a rather contrived tick-box way, since you asked!
I might get get a pair for gardening in as they look comfy, but I do care what I look like when out and about though! I used not too but I’m really enjoying looking more ‘put together’ for the first time in my nearly 50!years!

Personally Id never heard of them. But being older I remember as as far back as 1970s when denim dungarees were considered a real style statement, especially worn without a t shirt or anything underneath. So tbh these ones just look like a fun and comfortable development of a pretty established fashion style.

Haha I've done exactly the same. I think they are associated with 30s non binary overweight blue hair crowd and I'm too old for that.

I’m not sure if I do like them, that’s why I asked before spending money. They looked good on the woman I saw but I think that was more about her than the dungies.

I’m sure there are cheaper alternatives if you’re looking for comfort.
agree with pp, I see them as very Brighton/Bristol, a bit of a ‘I’m crazy me’ statement at times.

I bought some thin dungarees from new look last year they are great for mooching round the garden.

Well if you aren't sure you even like them then why would you buy them?
Surely you should wear clothes to be yourself not to imitate other people?

They are massive with the they / thems in Brighton

If you like them, wear them.

If you don't like them and think they are 'clown clothes' then don't wear them.

There's no objective reason why you shouldn't wear them, I disagree that they are only for toddler mums and am also surprised anyone cares about the opinion of a 14 year old daughter 😂If we all wore what 14 year olds thought was trendy we would look ridiculous!

I have some corduroy ones. I don't think they're stylish, i wouldn't wear them anywhere nice. But they are perfect when I take our toddler to groups or soft play. No more pulling my trousers up or top down whilst scrambling over play equipment.

They're also massive with a huge range of people who just want a comfy and funky pair of dungarees. They're very mainstream.

I associate them with DINKYs that WFH, probably in tech, and definitely making above average wages. That's what I am and lots of women at my company wear them, as well as my friends that work in tech too. I think it's the female equivalent of the tech bro jeans and hoodies stereotype.
Going by this thread there are obviously lots of other demographics that wear them to!

All the young employees of the salon I go to wear them - it’s their uniform! I really like their prints, wouldn’t wear them myself tho! I can hear my late DMIL saying “that’s brave” 😂😂

Dungarees are for toddlers and heavily pregnant women only in my opinion…

a friend of mine who is a Baptist minister (she styles them incredibly well but is very stylish generally)

This is ‘style and beauty’ the whole point is to ask questions / share opinions about clothing, makeup etc. I get a lot of inspiration by observing people who look good and thinking about why and reading threads on here - if that is ‘imitating’ so be it!
I don’t agree that we should always wear clothes to be ‘ourselves’ - sometimes we want or need to create a different impression. For example at work if it’s a serious meeting with potentially tricky conversations I wear more somber clothes and for an interview I look really smart with bit a bit more colour. I’m enjoying a bit of a glow-up and experimenting with different ideas to see what works for me - it’s fun!

I think wearing dungarees is one of the few sins that might push my DH to consider divorce. LOL I am happy with jeans or shorts.

Some people look incredible in dungarees - but I think, like you said, they are the people who would look good in a bin bag.

It's either a bit too try hard - or not trying at all in my opinion. Very primary school teacher/CBBC presenter vibes from the patterned ones. And 'is next Friday OK to paint the house' from the plain ones.

I’ve got a pair of denim dungarees, a denim boiler suit and a cord boiler suit. I get lots of compliments when I wear them (especially the boiler suits). I’m late 50s.

I don’t like their prints though.

Yes, I think that would be the beginning of the end of our marriage...he's very tolerant/doesn't notice what I wear otherwise.
