What dresses are you all wearing?

Most of my Summer clothes no longer fit and I desperately need a couple of cool, floaty dresses and some shorts that are not too short.

What have you all bought recently that you’ve loved?

I really need some inspiration.

For those of you that like airy trousers Zara have some brilliant linen ones with side splits. Brilliant for high heat & humidity.

Ooh I love this dress but I'm waiting for the sales. I unfortunately can't justify the £175 price tag at the moment.

I know what you mean! I got it at 20% off and had some gift vouchers for our local stockist!

I bought a beautiful linen dress from Jigsaw, gorgeous red shade, great fit from the pin tucks. It’s a winner for me!

There’s a shorter version and a top in the same style but different colours.

That is stunning! A beautiful shape. Is the colour on screen accurate? Such an unusual shade of red. Do you think it would work on someone tall and curvy (the tallness being relevant for where boobs sit)

That is so seriously gorgeous, I have just ordered it.

I have varipus bits from Jigsaw going back to 2010ish and can say that whilst the tag looks a lottle high, on a cpw basis, it probably represents very good vfm.

The red is really rich - almost more cranberry than tomato and less brick than the photo looks.

Height is hard to tell, I’m 5’ 7” but with a long waist and it’s pretty much where it needs to be for me.

I bought a 12 and my measurements are approximately
High bust 36” - 91.44cm (under the arms at highest place across my chest)
Full bust 41” -104.14cm (straight across the bust wearing a bra)
Under bust 35” - 88.9cm (that would be bra band level)
Waist 35” - 88.9cm
Hip 42” - 106.68cm

But there is enough room in the bust for me and I’m currently wearing a 36 FF.

Does that help?

That's a gorgeous dress - love the colour! It's a properly fitted waist though, isn't it ...? I so need to do something about my menopausal/ice-cream belly!!!

Agree - Jigsaw seems to have been overtaken by COS, & Other Stories etc in recent years. It doesn't seem to be mentioned that much on S&B. But I still find some great clothing there - as well as footwear & bags. I've been a fan for decades now.

@EleanorMc67could you please tell me about Me&Em sizing? I am about a size 10 but 5 foot 3 and a bit. I love their cheesecloth dresses but wondered if they might be too long for me. And are they true to size? Thanks in advance.

MrsSmithyLane · Yesterday 14:08

Hi @EleanorMc67

Im only 5ft 1 and Me and Em clothes are ridiculously long on me! I once emailed and asked about them doing a petite range and got a very patronising reply basically saying that I can fold the waist band over and everything would be tickets boo! they didn't tell me what to do with long dresses though...

Interestingly, I feel like the tucks create flow over my bumpy bits! And I do have bumpy bits, honest!

Incredibly helpful, thanks for such an informative post!

I have a linen dress from Cos which is huge. I’m quite tall so it does swamp me too much. It’s a kind of oversized shirt dress. I have a few of them which I’ve got from Vinted. Very comfortable and airy.

@Stillwearingskinnies & @MrsSmithyLane

I think that they're probably not great for shorter women ... I'm nearly 5' 10", so they're midi at the front on me & longer at the back (for the styles that are cut that way, which is a signature look for them).

As the dresses are wide-cut/A-lline, I'd say they're probably a bit oversized?

They do them as shorter dresses though, which would probably be over-the-knee for you? Would this length work better? Also previous years' versions on eBay/Vinted.

Thank you so much, that's helpful. It sounds like they would be too long for me, which is a shame. I might try a the short version but tbh I prefer my dresses calf length.
I may scour Vinted and perhaps chance it with a second hand one. If it's not right, I could always resell it.
I'm surprised they don't offer petite sizing.

Probably a bit too common for MN, but Mountain Warehouse have some fabulous skater dresses on offer at the moment. They're cool and flattering and only a tenner (was advertised as £19.99, but at the till it was £9.99)

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Yesterday 17:20

I've bought several of these from H&M in recent years. Not keen on the patterns this year, but just replaced my black one. Not everyone likes viscose, but I do 😊

As it’s so hot I’m wearing a mix of two dresses that I bought in Italy. A Mountain Warehouse dress and a White stuff dress. All very loose fitting and all have pockets.

Some of the longer versions might be ok shortened - the seam below the bust is quite high on me (almost empire line), so would be closer to the natural waistline on you. But some are tiered, some not, & some have a drawn thread detail around the hem, so you'd have to take up from the waist so as not to lose it. So it all might become a bit of a faff for you ... Do-able though, if you can be bothered!

That looks fabulous on you! And your boobs look super-perky, especially if you're a double F cup! I suspect I may have gone up a cup size (currently 36F), though I swore I wouldn't buy any new bras until I lost weight! (That was my 2025 resolution ...!!).

I love the colour too - I think that slightly darker/richer, almost burgundy/red/orange all at once, shade is great too. I've started to migrate from brighter reds towards those richer ones since my hair has faded from auburn to strawberry blonde.

But you have a very clearly defined waistline (which the dress also highlights well). It's the area I put weight on first. Still, it's in store here in Edinburgh, so I may venture into town when the temperatures drop ...

I've had maxi versions of those from H&M a few years ago, which I still wear, & they're great. Bought on eBay though - there are no longer versions of this particular style this year, unfortunately ...

The dress I wore today was from Brakeburn. Really like it and I always forget i have it until the sun comes out
