It’s so gorgeous:

For the reception I haven’t decided, but possibly a dress from here:

Ho hum - I’ll have to hit the apps. 😄

(Very sorry, I don’t have a question.)

I may never afford to buy any of these, but I am inspired to bring out some of the more interesting things from my own wardrobe (fairly tame by comparison). The ones that take up space, are not "flattering" in the conventional sense, and make me feel like I did as a teenage goth in tailcoats and 1930s velvet gowns

Echobelly · 19/05/2026 09:27

I do like some of the dresses... but not that one I must say. Also that is the worst photo of that model who is actually rather beautiful.

Tocsin · 19/05/2026 09:27

roseswithoutthorns · 19/05/2026 09:12

OK, you obviously do think those dresses are flattering & beautiful. They certainly appear to be aimed at the more eccentric type of bride but each to their own if it's your taste.

I don’t give a fig for clothes being ‘flattering’ in the MN sense. I don’t choose them to ‘show off my figure’. Purely to express my delight in the craft and design and beauty of the thing. Unless it’s Zara - where I just think it’s cute.

I kind of love them for that murdered bride Gothic aesthetic. They'd look horrific on me as they're designed for skinny wasted-looking people with long dark hair called Virginia and Lavinia, not buxom Anglo Saxons, but they'd look amazing in the right (shabby chic, faded elegance) setting.

Tocsin · 19/05/2026 07:04

But I genuinely would love the first dress for a civil ceremony (if I hadn’t got round to saving up for vintage Dior or McQueen, which I probably wouldn’t have). It’s weird to think strangers seeing me going in or out would be thinking how dreadful I looked. Despite how delighted I’d be with my image in the mirror.

As long as you were delighted that would be all that mattered.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 19/05/2026 09:32

Also I love the fact they're using older people as models.

Tocsin · 19/05/2026 09:32

wishingonastar101 · 19/05/2026 09:08

It's very Isabella Blow.

Gold star, @wishingonastar101.

(It’s ridiculous that I still feel sad. She wouldn’t have cared a jot about me - but the world without her, and Alexander McQueen and Stella Tennant is just a bit wrong.)

I mean... you've caused me to meditate on the nature of beauty, because I think it's hideous but I can't put my finger on why? Obviously there's the sleeves, but it's not just the sleeves.
Maybe it's the models pose and facial expression? It looks like it's physically harming her and I'm empathising?!

And you clearly think it's beautiful, and I really am trying hard to see that!

Tocsin · 19/05/2026 09:42

Oh! I love the narrative of her expression! Like she’s been used to being called beautiful all her life - since gawky teenager-hood - but is impatient with it and hates being photographed. She’s only making a concession, on the morning of her third wedding, because her grown up daughter and son insist. 😄

(She’s been refusing to get married again for years, but suddenly surprised herself and her groom / groomess by agreeing - As long as there’s absolutely no fuss.

I was hoping to encounter a fellow enthusiast who would recognise the continuum from Droopy & Browns to Cawley Studio. It was not to be …

Thanks for the flashback to Droopy & Browns. I love all the other whimsical wedding dresses (not the one you picked out) and all the other garments on her site. Lovely stuff

Originally I thought you were actually joking, but clearly not from your follow up posts.

I think the styling on the Cawley site is awful, and some the clothes could look fab with good accessorising.

There are several on the Magda site I would have worn the shit out of 20 years ago, but I so rarely go anywhere at all to 'dress for' now.

I'm all for wearing what you like to wherever, and have done, but most of my time is spent in a tiny Portuguese village renovating a 200 year old house and garden, so practical work clothes it is.

However, I still fantasise about the Molly Goddard hot pink multi frilled maxi dress from the first series of Killing Eve ....

Genius 😂

I like it but I don’t usually engage in threads

Summerhillsquare · 19/05/2026 09:47

I'm afraid I read that as Magda Bumtrim - probably because I'd just read about my pal's cat being groomed 😆

Im convinced ‘fashion’ is designed to keep women from looking in anyway like a normal, functioning part of society just so men have an excuse not to take us seriously.

If you would be delighted with it then that is all that matters but it looks like something an abattoir worker or pathologist might wear on his stag night for a laugh.

The model looks old enough to know how awful she looks in it.

She could be a perfect casting for Miss Havisham, deciding to give marriage another go with some poor sap that she will wreak revenge upon.

PineappleCoconut · 19/05/2026 09:57

The second link dresses aren’t too bad. Some overly hip enhancing for my taste and my size hips.

But the first one, she looks like a psycho hospital matron from a horror film.

I’m not sure if it’s the intention or just the styling, or her RBF expression.
But I imagine there is a very bloody chainsaw hidden behind her back.

It would make a perfect Halloween costume with just a bit of fake blood.

Is it a theme wedding?

I don’t look like either of your examples! But I honestly think the Cawley frills and furbelows (of other dresses) were just made for buxom milkmaids celebrating rural weddings - tiny 13th century village church and riotous reception at the local pub.

Also, to stop us doing anything practical without having to worry about our clothes.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 19/05/2026 10:10

@BoulevardOfBrokenSleep The sleeves are like horseshoe jeans on your arms! I think they work in a sheer fabric that maintains shape, but a solid fabric looks too outsized.

What practical thing do you need to do on your wedding day? Other than signing the register?

Hurrah! This is absolutely the point of this thread and others like them. To inspire - to show beautiful things - fashion as art and expression.

I can’t afford Cawley, but that doesn’t matter. I can enjoy looking and be inspired to choose beautiful fabrics and designs at my own price point. I am retired and live rurally. Big frocks don’t exactly fit in, but I still wear beautiful, unusual clothes and they give me joy.

ThisCandidMintGoose · 19/05/2026 10:26

Why do you need to get married? It's quirky enough you can wear that for any fancy occasion (indoor occasion, muddy field not so much)

surely time and a place?

I don't know any men wearing business casual who suddenly start scaling the office building 😂. Many of us don't do anything "practical" most days that can't be done in a dress.
