It’s so gorgeous:

For the reception I haven’t decided, but possibly a dress from here:

Ho hum - I’ll have to hit the apps. 😄

(Very sorry, I don’t have a question.)

You’re behind the times! Older models are riding high at the moment. Design houses aren’t daft - they know where the money is.

"At the moment" - plus-size models were riding high a few years ago too. And now many are out of work. The use of older models is still too infrequent IMO - so it's always good to see!

@bridgetreillydo you suppose anyone would willingly choose a wedding outfit in which they felt unhappy? I mean, I know MN-ers have recounted instances of not loving their wedding dresses - but if someone starts a thread showing a dress that would make them particularly happy, why do you suppose they are wrong about how they feel?

Have you sewn any of these? I love the bow patchwork dress, but the construction looks quite take-it-or-leave-it when it comes to fit.

I think it's about the drama rather than the fit, but would agree. And no I haven't - I gave up on sewing things for myself long ago as I was so bloody painstaking (& very slow on a machine) that I never finished things!!

henlake7 · 20/05/2026 15:06

I actually quite like that first dress. I think the feathers are a mistake and look abit cheap but I like the more sculptural aspect of it.
I think part of the problem is everybody thinks they know what 'flattering' is but it doesnt mean the same to everybody. Sometimes you want to wear something that flatters your personality or mood and not your body!

Floisme · 20/05/2026 15:16

I agree with you, @henlake7 about flattering meaning different things to different people.
I know a lot of posters on this board believe it means dressing for your shape and if you find that works for you, that's fine. But it's not settled science; it doesn't work for everyone; it certainly didn't work for me, and I get a bit tired of the way people who don't go along with it are regularly are dismissed as vacuous airheads.

I was thinking that the drama would be lessened if your own proportions don’t match the pattern size. It offers a slim waist and a more relaxed waist fit, but still comes in sizes - so if your bust and waist (the size points given) don’t line up, the patchwork construction would mean you could be making a “relaxed fit” with a slim version of the pattern, which wouldn’t be the version you were attempting to make. Attempts to force the slim version would ruin the drama.

Anyway, I’ll bow out as I can see that being comfortable having my own considerable “structure” isn’t really the point of this thread!

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am curious about what you're seeing that I'm not.

I see a poorly fitted, cheap looking lab coat which completely erases all implication of a woman's body being inside it, worn by a thoroughly miserable model who looks like she's preparing for execution rather than a lifetime of marital bliss.

Do you like it because it's different? Or because the price tag makes it exclusive?

I’m deep in a sewing jag at the moment. I just finished two big puffy blouses and am looking for a challenge so I’ve a feeling I’m going to be making one of those patterns before I know it but will try to calm down and spend the evening looking at the website first!

I just followed the brand on instagram and saw that 14 of my favourite people on there already follow them, how did I not know about this!

outerspacepotato · 20/05/2026 16:27

It's a shirt dress with poofy sleeves and feathers.

It doesn't know whether it wants to be a schoolmarm or a stripper or a long poet shirt. So, not a statement piece, rather a dress in need of therapy to find its identity.

The Robert Woods dress I like. It's a statement piece. I'd call it Weird Ruffled Regency.

Boned sleeves, not poofy. They are basically wired into that shape.

Sweet Jesus - is Uncle Fester the groom?

He’d be a bit jolly for her!

Sorry but I find that ‘wedding’ dress fucking hideous! 🤦🏼‍♀️

msmillicentcat · 20/05/2026 18:52

The whole Cawley wedding collection looks like wedding attire for the circus. Which is not necessarily a bad thing if you love a circus vibe.

However, the Magda Butrym dresses are absolutely wonderful! I will enjoy mentally spending my savings on these :)

I hope not, but the styling of those dresses does not scream happiest day of my life.

Picklelily99 · 20/05/2026 19:16

Just because they CAN, doesn't mean they SHOULD! Flippin 'eck, I mean apart from Helena Bonham Carter and her mum, who else could pull that off???

Tocsin · 20/05/2026 19:20

Me, @Picklelily99.

It's a wedding dress and analogue TV antenna in one!

Hey, stand right there. A little to the right, yes, that's it!

Hallywally · 20/05/2026 20:41

They’re clearly not designed to be appeal to the masses- they’re meant to be high end/high fashion/niche etc so I’m not sure why you’re surprised a lot of people aren’t keen on them OP? I don’t imagine you’d like them if you could buy a similar item in Primark or Esos?

Tocsin · 20/05/2026 21:16

I’m not sure where you read any comment of mine saying I’m surprised other people aren’t keen, @Hallywally?

I’ve been on S&B a loooong time. 😄 Pretty much every brand / designer I’ve ever mentioned has prompted scorn, derision, or sheer horror. Across two decades posters have pretty much remortgaged their houses to buy pitchforks with which to chase me. I just run fast towards more lovely clothes.

I said yesterday that it would be weird to think onlookers hated my outfit if I ever found myself wearing the dress I linked to my own wedding - given that I would be delighted with it. But I’m absolutely not surprised that most (not all!) posters here wouldn’t choose it for themselves. And that’s absolutely not a problem.

How on earth did you find that? I sew and have never seen anything like it.

My first thought was ‘I could never manage that’ - but really, anyone who could make a patchwork quilt could make that, and I know which I’d rather do.

I can't remember where I first saw her clothes? Maybe Blumenhaus Magazine or similar? I'm presuming you'd prefer to make a patchwork quilt ...??!!!

Have you looked at some of the other patterns though? There are lots of YouTube/Instagram posts/videos of people making & wearing clothing from her patterns. I love the skirts in particular.

I can recommend this walking skirt pattern - I made it in light wool suiting in a heathery check and wore it all winter. It trails down steps in a very satisfying way...

Next on my list, this ravishing travelling suit.

(Edit - for @Floisme and her Edwardian itch!)

That's beautiful. I love the skirt in that gorgeous mauve-pink silk.
