Do you get your nails done all the time?

I’ve had BIAB on for around a year now with mostly only infills. I removed them as I’m wanting to try another salon. When I first took them off they were long and looked ok but over the last week they have broken really low down to the point they’ve been bleeding and sore. Do you think I should give BIAB a rest for a good while now?
do you get your nails done or leave them?

I do my own, keep them pretty short and use just clear polish.

TheDevilWears · 09/05/2026 18:02

I have mine done all the time. My nails were always breaking … and regular nail polish chipped all the time. Right now I have ‘glazed donut’ 😂

Honestly, I think they look awful when they’re fake from a salon, each to their own though.

DelilahSpade · 09/05/2026 18:57

I had mine done for about 2 years every 2/3 weeks. I found they weren’t lasting and decided to buy some Sally Hansen (on offer in boots) and they are in great condition now.

i found using the primer, then colour, then top coat was just as durable as the biab. Start to chip after 10 ish days but saved a fortune.

Boots had an offer the other week with free all in-one strengthener if you spent £12.

I do not like Shellac. The way the nail surface is filed to give the polish a good key to stick to means my nails were brittle. As soon as I had the shellac removed all my nails snapped within a week.

Salon changed owner. New management offered BIAB. I prefer it as there is no surface filing. My nail tech is extremely good , the polish never chips. I get my nails done every 5-6 weeks only because the new growth is noticeable by then.

My early twenties daughter has her nails done by the same technician. Her nails grow at a much quicker rate. Last time was about 3 weeks ago on the same
day. I estimate her new nail growth is double the length of mine.

BIAB is rock hard. Daughter stims by biting her nails but she can’t bite through BIAB. It’s definitely a stim not a habit because even after a couple
of years of using BIAB I still have to remind her not to put her fingers in her mouth. If it was a habit she would have kicked it by now. Without a nail covering her nails would be so short I would feel sick just looking at them. And she works in retail, customers would notice her nails.

BIAB being rock hard has its downside. I can’t have nails too long as the length makes them ache. Any knock on your fingertips really hurts as the shockwave travels to the nail bed as there is no flexibility to absorb the knock.

Had acrylics since 2012. I do manual work and have big hands, without nice nails I have man hands.
I tend to have them off over winter when I’m not going anywhere or seeing anyone (jan - March) and my nails are fine. First week off they’re thin but I just cut them down short and that’s as far as it goes.

I do my own with clear varnish. I don’t like gel nails. I think they look too thick and grubby.

Poorly applied gel is thick. My nails have gel on them and they are about 1mm thick.
I pride myself on applying gel to my clients nails in a way that strengthens without the bulk. And zero grubbiness 😂

Never

Yabbadabbadooooooo · 09/05/2026 21:22

Who are you doing your nails for? To attract men? To attract women? You have been suckered in to spending money by Instagram. No one needs their nails painted. No one judges someone for not having the ILR nails painted. Just paint them yourself with a pot of Rimmel from Boots if you’re going to a wedding or something? You have all been conned. What man is going to judge a woman by whether her nails are shellac or BIATB or whatever it is you have. You’re all caught in the trap.

Ex nail tech here and you're used to being able to be heavy handed with your nails becausr they've got a protective armour on (biab) now they're bare you need to be gentler on your hands. Nail products don't weaken your nails, excessive nail plate filing and using your nails as tools etc will. You could keep getting biab if you want the length or keep them natural and shorter.

Same here and what she said is true

If your nails are damaged it's likely from the removal process.

BIAB doesn't damage your nails (although some brands are waaaaay better than others)

I have BIAB every two weeks…my nails grow fast! My nails underneath are perfectly healthy. I do give them a “rest” every 4-5 months for a couple of weeks, but they are fine, not thin or weak or broken. I think the key is finding a decent nail tech….one who doesn’t use a drill is a good start.

Nail tech here and the drill is not the issue if you find someone who uses it correctly

Glitchymn1 · 09/05/2026 21:23

I would presume it’s the removal process whereby they drill the gel off. My nails are fine with BIAB or gel but take it off and they’re flimsy and break. It’s terrible stuff.

You have beautiful hands OP!!!

as do do most of the posters who have put up pictures…

This is such a weird response. I sometimes get my nails done and I do it for me. I have zero interest in attracting men (or women) I have been married well over 20 years; but if I did, I wouldn’t want to attract someone so shallow that my fucking nails were any part of their decision. Mad that you think women do their nails for others and not themselves.

corblimeygvnr · 09/05/2026 21:35

Drill the gel off? Hands on fire? I don't know where some of you are going but I suspect! Get a proper place where it's not all about the number of customers and speed!

Never. I do my own and just use regular nail varnish. This is Nailberry. It lasts around 10 days.

I've recently started using Nailberry - it lasts really well doesn't it?

Chagalaga23 · 09/05/2026 21:52

I've never had my nails done ever.
They are good and strong.
I sometimes paint them myself.

BobbySox71 · 09/05/2026 22:02

I had gel nail done years ago and hated it plus they wrecked my nails.
Now they’re just natural and short, I take collagen powder daily in my coffee and they’re usually strong and healthy

Peachesandfizz · 09/05/2026 22:13

Mine are BIAB and done every 4 weeks. I used to pick my nails and also my scalp leading to patches of baldness, but having slightly thicker nails means I can't do that. I have an amazing nail tech and I love getting pretty nails!

ClaireEclair · 09/05/2026 22:14

I’ve had biab done three times in a year and it’s totally ruined my nails. Never again. Two were so thin they were painful for about a month and peeled constantly.

JaceLancs · 09/05/2026 22:31

I’m past 60 and have my nails done every 4 weeks - I enjoy choosing what I’m going to have done - the gel polish means I don’t break them or chip the polish
I used to do them myself but enjoy them being done professionally

basoon · 09/05/2026 22:35

Echobelly · 08/05/2026 13:28

I don't get my nails done - tried it twice for the experience and it didn't last long and the second time around it was a shellac one that it took my nails 6 months to recover from - they kept breaking.

Have done my nails twice, didn't like it.

Try taking collagen, great for nails and hair

Onefortheroad25 · 10/05/2026 09:50

I’m in a vicious circle with mine. I get acrylics but can’t get them off myself. Go and get them removed and get them redone cos they look so bad. I know my natural nails are crying out for a break. They do look lovely when done though.

ItsOkItsDarkChocolate · 10/05/2026 11:44

Personally, I’d suggest that you embrace your natural nails, and put the money towards a holiday or some experience instead.
