Do you get your nails done all the time?

I’ve had BIAB on for around a year now with mostly only infills. I removed them as I’m wanting to try another salon. When I first took them off they were long and looked ok but over the last week they have broken really low down to the point they’ve been bleeding and sore. Do you think I should give BIAB a rest for a good while now?
do you get your nails done or leave them?

Your fingers and nails are lovely OP, you have that soap nail thing going on. I'd just keep them as they are and paint them if you fancy it.

domenica1 · 08/05/2026 17:34

I do because they are thin and break off low and I end up biting them. If I had beautiful natural nails like yours I definitely wouldn’t spend so much on gel manicures!

QuietComet · 08/05/2026 18:06

Your nails look beautiful!

I'm a part-time nail technician. Your nails don't 'breathe' or anything, so as long as you're going to a good technician who doesn't over-file during application or infills, there's no reason why the product should damage your nails. Breaks aren't needed and, in fact, removal using acetone is far more drying and damaging than regular infills which are done correctly.

When you don't have product on, your nails are way, way thinner. You'll be used to being able to be heavy-handed too. So it's unsurprising that your nails broke. That being said, they look in great condition, the nail plate looks undamaged, so the product has been nicely removed. The surrounding skin looks healthy too.

Take some calcium supplements (and vitamin D to help absorb it) to grow naturally strong nails. No particular brand, pound shop is fine. My mum and I swear by them after years of brittle nails. My sister is still on BIAB.

alexandrasm · 08/05/2026 19:25

I do my own BIAB at home

corblimeygvnr · 08/05/2026 19:29

I get mine done every 3 weeks BIAB. If I didn't have them I would bite and pick them.

FrothyCothy · 08/05/2026 19:32

I do dip powder nails at home. Have had them on pretty consistently from last spring. Taking a break at the moment only because I’ve broken a couple since taking my last set off and need to let them grow a bit and have been too busy to do them (takes a good couple of hours). Echo what is said here - assuming you’re not sensitive to any ingredients like HEMA, it’s the filing the nail plate that hammers your nails so I barely do any now, just a light buff and some primer.

Girlwithavibe · 08/05/2026 19:36

I used to have gels but stopped about 2 years ago gave my nails a good rest !
I now have a a Russian manicure which is a extreme clean cuticle tidy then a Japanese manicure which is a P polish no gels no lamps just all good for your your nails I keep them short but they look super clean and shiny

xyz75 · 08/05/2026 19:40

I have mine done every 2 weeks and have done for years.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 08/05/2026 19:40

No, I file them I to shape and occasionally paint them myself ,I always paint my toenails . I do too much with my hands to have my nails done plus it's an expensive thing to keep up.

TubeScreamer · 08/05/2026 19:41

I’ve never really had mine done. Doesn’t cross my mind to do so.

OP yours look lovely as they are in the photo

Judysdreamofhorses · 08/05/2026 19:44

I've been getting biab for 3 ish years. Before that I was a chronic biter for 20 odd years so my own nails were in an awful state, I couldn't grow them out even if I did stop biting as they were so weak and brittle. I know a lot of people do feel gel/biab wrecks the nails but mine were wrecked to begin with and they look so much better now! My tech is excellent and I've had no issues so far, I get an infill every 3-4 weeks and every now and then she'll take them off completely to do a fresh set. Love them and no plans to stop unless I have to but if I had strong natural nail I'd probably feel differently.

Cocktailglass · 08/05/2026 19:45

No, never ever! Hate false nails, limit what you can do, especially the super long ones. I just look after my own, file, polish, natural.

EveryDayisFriday · 08/05/2026 19:45

I've had acrylics done every 4wks for the last 18m but decided to have a break. I have a full range of polish and a manicure set at home and lots of time to do them myself now.

ChiliFiend · 08/05/2026 19:49

I've just had several weeks of biab (two applications, no breaks) and my nails don't look great tbh. They look like they've got white scuff marks all over them. I'm trying to take a little break but I really do love the way painted nails look, and I can't handle the chipping that's inevitable if it's not biab or shellac. I'm also lucky to have a long nail bed and strong nails (usually) so I've never tried acrylics or anything else you would stick on. I read recently to apply sunscreen when your hand goes under the lamp (to protect your skin obviously, not your nails), so I'm going to be careful I do that from now on.

Your nails look beautiful - I presumed you'd added a stock photo of some sort as they look so healthy and you were complaining they were damaged!

Villanousvillans · 08/05/2026 13:34

I’ve never had my nails done.

Same here, never had them done.

2chocolateoranges · 08/05/2026 19:52

im a nail biter and have been getting BiAB on my nails for the last 2 years. I get them redone overly 3 weeks, my nails feel quite strong when she takes the biab off but I feel I would just start biting them again.

I don’t plan to take any breaks in between .

Cat3rpillar7 · 08/05/2026 20:31

BIAB left my nails weak. Thinner and more brittle. Thought I'd try it out because it's supposed to be healthier. But no better than normal gel.

My sister loves BIAB but she had terrible nails in the first place. So maybe depends on nail strength.

IwanttoWFH · 08/05/2026 20:50

I’ve had gel polish on my nails every three weeks for the last 14 years (minus Covid which was a shock!)

My nails are really healthy. They grow like wildfire and are very strong - rarely if ever get a break.

I don’t think they wreck your nails as long as you don’t pick/peel them off and they are removed properly.

AgentPidge · 08/05/2026 20:54

No, I don't get mine done. I'm perfectly happy with cutting and filling them myself. Painting them seems such a daft and pointless thing to do. Each to their own, though.

Squirrelchops1 · 08/05/2026 20:54

Gel wraps you cure are great. No damage. Remove with oil.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 08/05/2026 20:56

No i do nail wraps as cheap and removable using nail polish remover

Do you get your nails done all the time?
HoldMyWine · 08/05/2026 20:58

I do my own with clear varnish. I don’t like gel nails. I think they look too thick and grubby.

Clefable · 08/05/2026 21:00

I get mine done every three weeks with builder gel. I love having my nail art, they are such a little boost when I see them. And it stops me picking the skin around my nails which I used to do terribly. I’m sure my nails aren’t in great shape underneath after all this time but I’ll deal with that down the line if I need to!

Fatiguedwithlife · 08/05/2026 21:02

CloudyBayPlease · 08/05/2026 13:51

Never. I do my own and just use regular nail varnish. This is Nailberry. It lasts around 10 days.

they are amazing! Where did you get the polish from?
