Do you get your nails done all the time?

I’ve had BIAB on for around a year now with mostly only infills. I removed them as I’m wanting to try another salon. When I first took them off they were long and looked ok but over the last week they have broken really low down to the point they’ve been bleeding and sore. Do you think I should give BIAB a rest for a good while now?
do you get your nails done or leave them?

I have mine done every 3 to 4 weeks. I keep them really short. No idea what they are like underneath because I have them infilled when they start to grow out.

TeaPot496 · 08/05/2026 21:34

Never. I just buff them at home to remove ridges and make them shiny. Lost art.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/05/2026 21:39

No so tedious. Also I work in a clinic and long nails are not allowed. I get press ons for my annual leave. Easy to put on and look great.

PloddingAlong21 · 08/05/2026 21:42

BIAB killed my nails. Were awful! I went back to regular gel by British Magpie and the ingredients are so much better and my nails far healthier.

Ilovegolf · 08/05/2026 21:44

I have BIAB every two weeks…my nails grow fast! My nails underneath are perfectly healthy. I do give them a “rest” every 4-5 months for a couple of weeks, but they are fine, not thin or weak or broken. I think the key is finding a decent nail tech….one who doesn’t use a drill is a good start.

I recently started trying builder nails. Never had it done before. Is it normal for them to start peeling off after a week? I don’t want to be forking out £40 every couple of weeks. The girl did say that they’re using a new type of polish. Not sure if it’s just not working or if I’m too heavy handed.

Same.

I use stick on nails from Amazon, I used to use Glaize but I’ve found an alternative I prefer. My nails are naturally pretty rubbish but they grow with these and do get stronger.

ohwhatthehelly · 08/05/2026 22:29

I’ve never had my nails done, in my mid forties and want to but don’t want to spend £££ when I already spend far too much on my hair!

What’s the deal with gel wraps you cure yourself or some kind of stick one? I bought some stick on super short ones from Sainsbury’s but I’m too scared to use them tbh. I have a fairly hands on job and constantly cooking and cleaning at home.

ohwhatthehelly · 08/05/2026 22:30

I saw ads for Glaize but wasn’t sure if it was any different to the ones I got in Sainsbos. ‘Elegant Touch Gel Finish’ they are, they’re on me bedside table.

CoastalCalm · 08/05/2026 22:32

Every 3/4 weeks

socks1107 · 08/05/2026 22:35

I get mine done every three weeks, haven’t had a break although appreciate I probably should

Namechange6578 · 08/05/2026 22:42

I had only ever had gel nails done for my wedding 15 years ago, until I fancied having them done a couple of years ago for holiday. Since then I haven't had a break, I love it! Go every 3 ish weeks for BIAB, can't see me stopping anytime soon.

Thepossibility · 09/05/2026 04:03

I do (very) cheap press ons at home because my natural nails and weak and annoying and it feels more practical for me to have them on. Plus they make my hands look way better.

Some gel wraps are cured eg holy gels. Some just stick and file eg glaize

Lots of different opinions. I had BIAB for a special occasion last year and when I had them removed the nail technician said I needed to get my natural nails in better condition before I had them done again, she recommended salon manicures with nail strengthening treatments. I haven't had it done for ages and my nails are weak, brittle and ridged. My son is getting married later this year and I need to do something about it!

@Gettingbysomehow which press ons do you use please?
OP I've never had my nails done professionally other than an ordinary nail polish a few times for weddings etc. I tend to prefer to keep them short because of my job but when I let them grow they're really strong and I think this might be because I so rarely have even ordinary polish on them.

jessbell · 09/05/2026 08:45

I used to have mine done regularly (either acrylics or gels depending on whether I needed extra length/strength or not) until I developed an allergy about a year ago. Can’t even get away with HEMA free polish so pretty much all acrylic, gel, wraps etc. are not an option for me now. I absolutely hated it at first and still a bit miffed as I miss having pretty designs but I’ve saved a small fortune so that’s something 💁🏻‍♀️ I usually just do a clear polish or use one of the rimmel 60 second polishes if I fancy a bit of colour.

TheChosenTwo · 09/05/2026 08:46

Ii just do my own. Takes 10 minutes, have naturally long nail beds and a good shape so I don’t do any faffy filing or prep etc, literally 2 coats of cheap polish (Rimmel or Barry M) and seche vite top coat. Takes less than 10 minutes and they dry rock solid very quickly - suits me perfectly.
I used to get them done every 3 weeks but then it became difficult finding the time, the UV thing made my hands burn, I didn’t like that she stopped offering the removal service to increase the amount of clients she could get in (absolutely totally fair of her to prioritise her profits, no issue with that but I hated having to remove the old gels myself, took ages and I swear I really damaged my nails doing it).
So found a workaround.

Your natural nails are beautiful. I have serious nail envy.

I think you could easily paint them and take care of them yourself. The Salon Life on YouTube has excellent advice, eg:

I used to but don’t bother now. I use Dior nail glow.

The lamp shouldn't burn at all, if it does, it's because of either damaged nails or product being applied too thickly x

I use opul. They are amazing. I have 10 days off and I have some arriving today.
When I worked in an office years ago I used to have my nails done but they needed doing every 3 weeks or they looked awful and I just dont have the time for that.
I also order off Amazon prime for next day delivery if Im in a hurry because opul take about 5 days to deliver.

It wasy fingers that felt like they were burning, not my actual nails!
But that wasn’t the reason I stopped going, merely a point of annoyance.
So much more convenient to take 10 minutes out of my day to do them myself and I can remove them in a couple of minutes, no soaking or scraping etc, just wipes away with a cotton pad.
