Do you get your nails done all the time?

I’ve had BIAB on for around a year now with mostly only infills. I removed them as I’m wanting to try another salon. When I first took them off they were long and looked ok but over the last week they have broken really low down to the point they’ve been bleeding and sore. Do you think I should give BIAB a rest for a good while now?
do you get your nails done or leave them?

I get them done around autumn/Christmas time 2 sets on the run but they leave my nails trashed and it takes months for a whole new nail to grow. My natural nails are lovely and strong so I should just leave them but I do like the look of 'done' nails. Don't bother with just varnish waiting around for it to dry and then chips within a day.

Morepositivemum · 10/05/2026 13:59

Have gotten shellac and bush, both left my nails in absolute bits. Everyone I talk to about nails says the same. The problem is they look so good😅

ChocolateAddictAlways · 11/05/2026 13:40

I have a regular manicure once a month. Mostly for the tidying up aspect.

Your natural nail bed is long which means even if you keep your nails short they will look great, either polished or not. I have a very short and stubby nail bed 🤣

Personally, I’d suggest that you embrace your natural nails, and put the money towards a holiday or some experience instead.

I missed the bit where OP said she chose nails over a holiday.

Just curious, when do you age out of pretty colours and fancy nail art? I'm 67 and love getting fancy coloured nails.

I’m 50 but will still be getting fancy colours when I’m in my 80’s hopefully! Life is too short for boring nails 😁

Who are you doing your nails for? To attract men? To attract women? You have been suckered in to spending money by Instagram. No one needs their nails painted. No one judges someone for not having the ILR nails painted. Just paint them yourself with a pot of Rimmel from Boots if you’re going to a wedding or something? You have all been conned. What man is going to judge a woman by whether her nails are shellac or BIATB or whatever it is you have. You’re all caught in the trap.

What a weird comment. I’m not on instagram or anything like that and I’m certainly not getting my nails done for anyone else. I get them done because I enjoy it and like looking at pretty nails. I couldn’t care less if anyone else is looking at them!

Iloveeverycat · 11/05/2026 16:01

I have never had my nails done at a salon. I am 60

cupfinalchaos · 11/05/2026 16:04

I tried to give mine a rest and they have become so thin they just tore everywhere.. so back I go every two weeks.

KateBushAgain · 08/05/2026 17:07

Is that BIAB Nanof8?

No those were gel. It just happened to be the only nail photo I had on my phone

2chocolateoranges · 12/05/2026 08:03

@Yabbadabbadooooooo Have you ever thought that some people actually get their nails done for themselves and not to attract a man or look good on instagram, or does that go way above your thought process?

get a life and don’t be so judgemental.

i get my nails done for me, my dh has bought me stunning diamond rings and my nails look better with biab on them than bitten. I keep them pretty short but they are neat and tidy. Love getting my nails done.

TealReader · 12/05/2026 08:45

I seldom do mine, mainly because I can’t be bothered with all the hanging out in salons etc. I usually do them only if going on holidays or to a wedding etc. Apparently bare nails are now in so my laziness has finally made me fashionable.

TheMerlotPenguin · 13/05/2026 21:24

I now use Essie gel and top coat which I read about in here, doesn’t need setting under a lamp. Apply like ordinary nail polish and it looks like gel - lasts about a week though. Remove with ordinary nail polish remover.

readingmakesmehappy · 13/05/2026 21:25

I leave them because there are too many reports of modern slavery connected to nail bars for me to ignore.

AImportantMermaid · 13/05/2026 21:35

Your natural nails are beautiful. They look clean, smooth, and healthy. Why would you want to hide them behind paint?

I must admit I wouldn't use these type of nail bars. I go to a local lady who was a few years below me in school, so no modern slavery going on there!

whatsit84 · 13/05/2026 21:51

Your nails are lovely! I have regular gel. Rarely have a break - once every few years. Nails are fine, they will grow out ok if I left them. But I do like having nice nails….

OtterlyAstounding · 13/05/2026 22:08

I could never be bothered with the money or time. I occasionally notice and admire natural, unpainted nails that are very healthy and well-manicured, but can I be bothered to do more than clip my own neatly short? Nope.

cinnamonmilkandhoney · 13/05/2026 22:40

just paint them myself when I can be bothered

CharlotteStreetW1 · 14/05/2026 08:33

I do my finger nails myself, part of my Sunday morning routine. I invariably have a nude polish, just normal nail polish.

I've had shellac a couple of times for holidays and my manicurist is really gentle in taking it off (it's also less severe than gels).

I had acrylics once decades ago when I was a bridesmaid. My fingers still shudder at me taking those off myself (no one told me!) 😬

I do have regular pedicures because she does a much better job than I do on my toes.

I go to a small salon run by a couple of local women.

Gettingbysomehow · 14/05/2026 10:37

I stuck these on yesterday and Im already sick of them. I cant do anything. They are too long. Ill get short ones next time Im on holiday.

honeyfox · 14/05/2026 12:07

Nah. I prefer to save the money to get my roots done.

I've had shellac done and BIAB but they all seem to destroy my nails. Strange, as they are naturally quite strong without it. Hate the way they file down the surface of the nail and the drill thing is awful. I once left a salon with my cuticles bleeding! Was too upset to complain. Tried nail wraps too but they also weakened my nails.

Earlier this year i bought an advent calendar of nail products on sale for 50% off (Manicurist), containing polishes and oils and stuff. It's excellent and will last for years.

Ex nail tech here and you're used to being able to be heavy handed with your nails becausr they've got a protective armour on (biab) now they're bare you need to be gentler on your hands. Nail products don't weaken your nails, excessive nail plate filing and using your nails as tools etc will. You could keep getting biab if you want the length or keep them natural and shorter.

This is true but I would also say that is possible to for nails to be damaged even wearing just normal polish..it can cause micro trauma/lifting even just from normal use, though I agree heavy handedness will make it worse.

I’ve been using nail wraps lately, OP and they help loads because I have slight damage at the tips due to excess water exposure. Wraps keep the tips ‘together’ and the damage is nearly gone.

This isn't true. The products don't cause damage, poor application and/or removal causes the damage and not looking after your nails.

If you have damaged from water it's because you're not wearing gloves. If your product is lifting it's either using your nails as tools or poor application.

I disagree. Anything ‘stuck’ to the nail, whether that be polish, gel, biab, acrylics etc has the ability to lift WITH the cells of the nail still attached to the product if knocked etc as part of everyday life. As I said though, I agree that it’s worse if nails are used as tools and people are more heavy handed.

I haven’t worn any product like biab for a long time.

I also NEVER use my nails as tools, and ALWAYS wear gloves. But I have a medical condition which means I wash my hands a lot, hence water exposure.

ohwhatthehelly · 18/05/2026 21:46

Can I ask, if you get your nails done regularly do you always wear gloves for any dishwashing / cleaning? I am a vain and impractical person but my hands still feel like tools. I mean, how do you even wipe your arse?
