What to wear for a smart but relaxed 40th birthday lunch for post baby body

I’m turning 40 in June and am having a birthday lunch for 30 family and friends at a lovely old hotel in Wiltshire. It’s sort of fancy but not proper posh, and I’ve hired out a room that opens out onto a patio/garden area. It’s day time, including kids, so fairly relaxed.

I don’t know what to wear! Here are my issues:

  • I had a baby nine months ago and have not lost weight, and am still breastfeeding, so nothing in my wardrobe from life of old fits me, and I need outfit to be breastfeeding compatible.
  • I’m 5,4” and a size 12. My body has changed - I used to have a small waist/sizeable bum at size 10. Now my waist is much thicker, my boobs and tummy bigger and saggier. I have chunky upper arms. I don’t know how to dress myself.
  • On top of all this my hair is falling out and my skin isn’t nice, and I look frankly exhausted and bedraggled most of the time through lack of sleep and eating too much of the wrong stuff.

So as much as I want to celebrate with my loved ones, I’m also starting to dread an event where I can’t just blend into the background.

My style of old was sort of minimalist, good quality clothing with lots of knitwear and jeans. Nothing fussy. I like colour and texture. I’ve never had my colours done but I’m fair and suit cooler shades and tend towards muted - have never been able to make jewel brights work, for example. Most of my wardrobe is Toast, Cos, Sezane (for work mostly) or vintage bits of cashmere. I don’t know what my style is now, I live in leggings as my lovely pairs of Toast trousers and Everlane jeans don’t fit!

I’d love suggestions from wise people who might help me reinvigorate my style.

Open to dresses or tops and bottoms or jewellery/accessories. I’d wear flat shoes such as sandals. Or even cosmetics etc for skin and hair.

Budget up to £500 for everything….

Thank you xx

A bit different to my usual style but I also like this and comes in petite… but maybe a bit too much of a statement!

Just don't drape yourself about the place like the model or you'll look ridiculous!

ETA I think it's quite nice!

If not feeling body confident I'd normally suggest trousers and a top, as dresses tend to cling and fall in awkward ways. With two pieces you get a chance to "reset" the drape halfway - if that makes any sense at all!

@EleanorMc67 and I generally have very different ideas on clothes, but I really like the Sezane co-ords. (Though not the inescapable provenance.)

Not sure this thread has touched on Kindred yet? (I have scrolled back, but it’s long.) Might appeal to a Toast fan. Definitely luxe - but so relaxed and un-stuffy. Lots of the tops and some of the dresses are button fronted.

We might have closer taste/opinions regarding our own personal style than you think ...!

I will often post links to things I wouldn't buy myself (& may even dislike!) - as, if I spot something that seems like it will fit a poster's own criteria, that's surely the point of replying to the original query.

Do you mean provenance re the fabric content etc of this particular outfit - or Sezane in general? As far as the high street goes, it's pretty decent re sustainability/ethics (certainly much better than it was some years ago) - it's not the best, but nor is it the worst by a long way?

I like almost all this collaboration with Antoinette Poisson - but then I love their wallpapers & saved this link to their seaside home some time ago, because of the hand-painted walls ...

@PluckedFromThinAir - did you order the Alemais shirt or anything else?

This linen-blend shirt popped up in Vinted & I thought of you!

Not for your birthday do, but as a useful & stylish summer shirt. Sold out on H&M but a Large & Small both on Vinted - so you could keep an eye out for a Medium if you like it.

I totally relate to the post-partum body adjustments and the sleep deprived worn out look. It’s a wild ride! Congrats on still breastfeeding. My thought on this though is that in 2 months time your bub will probably be enjoying 3 solid meals a day and you might be able to time your breastfeeds so you’re not doing it at the party - for example, start of day feed, pre-party feed, post-party feed, bedtime? I only say this because you’ll be entering that glorious phase where you can hand them a piece of fruit or pouch etc., so on that day you can wear whatever you like without being restricted by needing button up. And if your bub does get desperate for milk, I’m sure the hotel would have a quieter room than the party room to just unzip your outfit to feed really comfortably.
I hope you find something that makes you feel fabulous and free to celebrate all you’ve accomplished in 40 years!

Or even co-ords ...? Bit sweaty otherwise for the summer!

Also saw this, @PluckedFromThinAir - silk & a size L which equates to a 12. At the top of your budget, but the print is rather lovely.
