Booked short break in Spain next week. Warm enough for dresses but want to take a jacket for evenings. Im 65 and have the usual blue denim one but get impression a bit dated. Any suggestions ? Would a cardigan be better?

I’m 58 and just bought a blue denim for Florence next week. The only other thing I considered was one of those utility jackets in olive green. Very popular these days. But to your question, I would take both?

BarryKentPoet · 28/03/2026 18:20

I have a couple of coloured leather and suede jackets from Joe Browns, so similar in style to the denim ones but not as dated.

Katykaty11 · 28/03/2026 19:10

Thank you both. I was wondering about green. I'll also have a look at suade for a change.

Are denim blazers dated?

SiobahnRoy · 28/03/2026 19:42

Also off to Spain in a couple of weeks, taking denim jacket and probably cream linen blazer, but may take M&S not suede jacket in dark brown instead, depending on weather nearer the time

Thanks for the suggestions. Hitting the shops on Monday.

The shops are full of boxy denim jackets, different in style from last season. They make me think of prison jackets in Shawshank but I'm sure they're very popular.

I'm 59 and still wearing the Levi denim jacket that H got for his 13th birthday. It must be antique.

I don't care if it's dated.

A pharmacist offered me quite a bit of cash for it last week. Grin

A quilted boxy jacket would b3 nice. I have a blue cotton one3 from joules or boden

Tu have these lovely linen jackets. They do a variation on them every year and they’re so affordable and wearable - light and comfortable and go with anything, and can be dressed up or down.

Google Roman stretch pocket details jacket. I have several in a variety of different colours. Really comfy, quick to dry and timeless. Can't send a link as wifi is weak

The view (which I don’t share) is that denim jackets are dated when they’re the fitted shortish ones. They’re more current in the oversized or boxy styles. I am still wearing my fitted one because I don’t want the 80s style oversized one.

Love the Tu linen cropped jackets shared by @MayaPinion upthread.

Katykaty11 · 29/03/2026 12:17

Thanks for all suggestions. I guess I think the typical dress/short blue denim jacket ( and white trainers) is a bit dated. I can get to most shops tomorrow. I've also ordered the tu jacket.

I bought and returned this. The pockets just sat oddly and I’m not that busty. They are good value if they suit you though.

I bought a crochet/lace cream cropped jacket from M&S but I haven’t received it yet.

Haven’t decided if I like it yet.

It's hard to tell without your budget or style- but I would consider something like this:

They have a denim one too, which is definitely isn't outdated.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 29/03/2026 12:32

Denim jackets aren’t dated they are the epitome of summer! There great because they go with summer colours a lot if what’s been suggested colour wise is more suited to winter.

Katykaty11 · 29/03/2026 12:39

Haven't dismissed my typical denim jacket yet. The sezane one is nice and simple. I'll also have a look at cardigans. Thanks.

Boxy seems to be the style at the moment but I've always preferred fitted.
I've got a lovely fitted Bench denim jacket that goes nicely with summer dresses.

I've also got a nice suede lightweight jacket from Tesco. It's a bit boxy but works ok.

Crochet cardigans also seem to be in the shops at the moment. I'm not usually a fan but I've got a long black one that looks quite nice over certain dresses.
