Booked short break in Spain next week. Warm enough for dresses but want to take a jacket for evenings. Im 65 and have the usual blue denim one but get impression a bit dated. Any suggestions ? Would a cardigan be better?

I do love a good check. This one could elevate an otherwise boring outfit. If you throw this on with your school-run jeans and t-shirt you automatically look stylish.

It's rather a natty outfit in the check, isn't it? Helped by her amazing 'fro!

Quite like this Mint Velvet one (again, worn with trousers). Think that's because I've just been to see the wonderful Biba exhibition in Edinburgh & the little buttons & sleeve shape are very reminiscent of that era - I could see Marc Bolan in this!!

Neutral Linen Cropped Jacket

Neutral tone jacket in a cropped silhouette featuring a high neckline, puff shoulders, buttoned cuffs, long sleeves, welt pockets with gold-tone button fastenings through the front. Fully lined.

You might like to try this one from John Lewis, OP - if it's essentially a denim jacket in cream that you're after?

And I know you said you'd just returned a Mango one from the sale, but this one is new in?

Tu have these lovely linen jackets. They do a variation on them every year and they’re so affordable and wearable - light and comfortable and go with anything, and can be dressed up or down.

I have this in white from a few years ago they are very versatile

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 13:18

Something like this - just the right colour for now. This one is wool, there will be cotton ones maybe later?

Lovely shade of yellow. Just saw a western jacket in Crew. Not sure if I can live with the logo buttons.

Pale yellow is a good shout right now. Mango have a similar ace one.

KingPrinceCharles · 01/04/2026 18:07

I bought one of these last year https://www.woolovers.com/womens/jackets/linen-jacket-with-collar-blue-40025

Wait till you get to Europe- check out the stores see what the the locals wear. Italian or Spanish women pull off style in a way british cannot. Having said that, matalan is a good call.

My probably most worn jacket is Crew. I don’t notice the logos.

I had the cream M&S crocheted jacket mentioned up thread until yesterday, when I sent it back. It’s lovely craft work but it didn’t fit me properly.

Oh that’s a shame, I had my eye on it but currently OOS. What’s the fit like?

It was too wide for me. M&S isn’t known for consistent sizing, though, so if I ordered another in the same size it might have been better.

I think it’s not actually crocheted, but some sort of tape work joined by threads. I can’t remember the name, possibly something like Corneille work? I can knit and crochet but the craft in the jacket is way beyond my skills.

landlordhell · 03/04/2026 20:49

Update the shape of a denim jacket. Plenty of modern shapes about.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 04/04/2026 09:08

@Katykaty11 M&S has a beige suede thst goes with everything. I love a cotton/limrn neutral jacket too but I wear it: packing it isn’t recommended! Denim for casual but you can get off white denim. Safari style jackets work too! You can get them in light cotton.

Crwysmam · 04/04/2026 14:38

I’ve just bought a new suede jacket off Vinted. Brand new with tags and this years season from Jaeger M&S. Has rave reviews but a bit expensive. It was still expensive on Vinted but 2/3rds of the rrp so a bit of a bargain. I have a good collection of coats and jackets but they are all winter warmth and wanted something smart for cooler summer days and spring weather.
I used to have some lovely smart summer jackets but they are all rather dated. Hopefully a simply styled suede jacket will stand the test of time.

Beachtastic · 05/04/2026 14:28

Haven't RTFT but would you consider a pashmina shawl instead? They roll up to next-to-nothing and are very lightweight to stuff into a bag, but give plenty of warmth when needed on hols.

I know you don't like online shopping, but something like this is pretty much risk-free especially as they are so easy to return if you don't like it!

The view (which I don’t share) is that denim jackets are dated when they’re the fitted shortish ones. They’re more current in the oversized or boxy styles. I am still wearing my fitted one because I don’t want the 80s style oversized one.

Love the Tu linen cropped jackets shared by @MayaPinion upthread.

The fitted short ones are dated if you wear them with the 'ditsy midaxi dress and white trainers' look.
I have a Levi's trucker and I wear it regardless of what's fashionable, and I do double denim.

Girlwithavibe · 05/04/2026 17:25

If u love fashion buy a windbreaker with funnel neck collar they go with everything right now

It's hard to tell without your budget or style- but I would consider something like this:

https://www.sezane.com/en-en/product/will-jacket/ecru#size-XXS

They have a denim one too, which is definitely isn't outdated.

Ooh, the olive green suede here is just lush!

Holdinguphalfthesky · 05/04/2026 22:44

I do like the Nicole jacket from Roake studio. Worth the money IMO, very versatile and flattering, but they also show upon Vinted. I also have a very nice leather biker style jacket from Barney’s (via Vinted) which is perfect for the cool spring evenings or breezy days.

Denim4ever · 05/04/2026 22:52

Blazer - traditional navy one or linen. Leather but not faux leather in Florence as it's a leather goods city and faux will look tacky. The quilted jackets are still in fashion but not very Italian. Classic looks are still the thing as they are here. Cardigans can work but blazer is better

Katykaty11 · 06/04/2026 11:40

So I'm off to Spain with new short jacket that's - blue! Sorry can't do links - it's Selborne £99 from Hobbs. BUT I am also keeping cream linen(ish) collarless jacket from Tu. Looks really good. I sized down and just sewed a stitch in edge of pocket flaps to stop them sticking up - bargain for £25. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
