Another wedding guest one sorry!!

I am part of the grooms family. I will be doing one church reading and will be in a few pictures. I bought this and loved it. But now I am thinking it is too much? I am a size 14, 5'6'' tall, my bum/ bust measurements are equal and my waist is defined. I'm 36

Irish here too, and I think it's perfectly suitable. Just get a nice bolero or short jacket for the church.

OP you should have posted this on Craicnet Wink
Its gorgeous, colour is fab and its not ott at all for doing a reading.

goingforgold123 · 16/03/2026 18:57

Hen party/ works christmas party dress. Its nice enough but its definitely evening attire

TaraPup · 16/03/2026 19:02

I keep coming back to this thread it's so funny.

OP 'How is this dress for an Irish wedding in Ireland?'
Irish people : 'fine/lovely/grand'
British people : 'Absolutely not, you harlot'

😂😂

deepbreathseveryone · 16/03/2026 19:09

I think any UK commenters will all say it's OTT & Irish will say it's grand but make sure your accessories bring the drama. If you're 34J the ruffle will draw more attention than hide it I think? It's quite a bright red - what's your colour season? & What are the brides colours? Make sure you don't clash in family photos is all I'm thinking.

sofiamofia · 16/03/2026 19:10

It's grand OP, I was expecting a lot more! I'm Irish and I don't think I've ever heard anyone ask is this dress too much for a wedding 😂

Also, I don't think you need to worry about the weather too much. May can be lovely in Ireland. May is Communion season, always lots of sleeveless dresses, not a pashmina in sight.

ny20005 · 16/03/2026 19:13

Is absolutely lovely for an Irish church wedding. You’ll need a wrap or pashmina as it could be cold in May

But in England people don’t really get dressed for weddings. Not dressed dressed. In Ireland, people get really dressed. There’s a definite cultural difference.

I think it’s fine.

Oh I think people in England do get dressed for weddings. They just dress nicely.

Giddykiddy · 16/03/2026 19:23

Irish weddings are very glamorous - so it'll be nice - just wear a throw in the church

Silverfoxette · 16/03/2026 19:23

It’s a lovely gúna go for it, I love that shade of red. If your boobs were hanging out or it was up to your arse I’d say have a rethink

also, the only time people worry about covering their shoulders is in a traditional Latin mass. If it’s a tlm you’ll need your head and shoulders covered

otherwise for your usual local parish church it’s fine

No that would be boring as F. Compared to some of the (I'm guessing) non Irish posts here on S+B! The Irish replies would all be -

It's grand,
It's grand lovely colour
It's grand what's your shoes like
It's grand where's the wedding
It's grand is it a three day event
What you wearing to the BBQ.
Who's the band?
Are you staying in the hotel, for the residents sing song.
Have you got your panadol in the bag for the hangover.
Bring flats for the dancing if you're wearing sky scrapers.
Are the B+G loaded or what.

And so on.

Garman · 16/03/2026 19:28

Didn’t realise the English were so uppity about wedding guest outfits 😄 I’m Irish, that’s absolutely fine as a wedding guest dress, you don’t need to cover your shoulders in church it’s not the Vatican or 1932. And the colour is fab, we like colour here, are UK weddings in beige or grey?

No beige would be too close to white and the bride would have you banished for trying to upstage her 🤣🤣

“nice”…it’s just such a boring descriptive word…

Nn9011 · 16/03/2026 19:37

It's lovely but red can mean you've slept with the groom, that's why it's avoided at weddings.

Not if the threads on S&B are anything to go by.

MiddleAgedDread · 16/03/2026 19:38

If you’re a 34J I’d be concerned about the bra situation in that dress.

Nah. Loada rubbish.
I asked opinions on a MOB dress and was told black meant i disapporoved of the marriage.
Who makes this stuff up?

damelza · 16/03/2026 19:42

This thread could turn into a classic. It's hilarious.

Remember that English weddings are for Cinderella. Midnight or earlier and all gone to bed with a Horlicks. Things are only starting then at an Irish wedding.
