Another wedding guest one sorry!!

I am part of the grooms family. I will be doing one church reading and will be in a few pictures. I bought this and loved it. But now I am thinking it is too much? I am a size 14, 5'6'' tall, my bum/ bust measurements are equal and my waist is defined. I'm 36

No.

Not in an Irish church - Catholic or Presbyterian.

What about COI?

I'd say the same.

Tad more conservative throughout the 32 counties.

My great aunts would be so stony faced 🤣

Bones101 · 23/03/2026 00:35

We're catholics haha we dress a LOT more formal than this for a wedding! It's very plain.

The Jen Pink Midi dress from Phase Eight is lovely, as is the green long-sleeved dress. Gas how people think they are an authority on Irish catholic churches because they have an Irish grandparent - my mam said when they were young, they used to cover their hair at church, so a huge amount has changed. I've flashed a bit of shoulder and seen many a shoulder in a church - no one caught fire!

I don’t see anything wrong or exceptionally revealing about this dress. Contrary to some beliefs the Irish wear the same outfits to a church wedding as would be worn by the British public to any wedding in the UK. The only thing I’d be worried about is a supportive bra, especially since you said you’ve a large bust.

Yardbrushes · 23/03/2026 09:04

Yes. Exposed shoulder is not appropriate.
The dress is lovely, could you wear a wrap?

Mumandcarer80 · 23/03/2026 13:39

It’s a lovely dress but depends on the time of year. I wouldn’t want to be wearing a crepe material dress over summer. Be nice for a winter wedding with a shrug.

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · 23/03/2026 19:03

It's gorgeous! I'm Irish and we love it when everyone dresses up for weddings. It's a sign of respect for the bride and groom. Get that dress and enjoy the wedding x

Now, I didn’t like the dress AT ALL on the link to the store. Thought it looked a bit tacky and not wedding-y. BUT then I saw the photos of you wearing it, OP, and I’ve completely changed my tune! I think it looks lovely on you, really suits you, complements your figure. Sometimes things look completely different when you try them on, guess this is one of those! I agree that perhaps you might want something over your shoulders in the church, but it’s fab. Wear it and enjoy yourself!

JaneJeffer · 23/03/2026 19:24

I haven’t seen so much angst about shoulders outside the Vatican steps. Nobody will take a blind bit of notice.

Northbynorthbest · 23/03/2026 19:28

Absolutely fine for an Irish church wedding. Speaking as an Irish person.
Lovely dress by the way! Weather in May can be hit and miss - you might want a pashmina or something to keep you warm during outdoor photos.

TaupeFox · 23/03/2026 19:42

If you like it go for it but personally I would wear a bolero or shawl to cover my shoulders, to be respectful in a church. I have worn a fabulous strapless dress from Coast to a wedding but it wasn’t a church wedding, it was in a countryside hotel. Definitely keep shoulders covered, no revealing cleavage, no mini skirts or bare legs (wear ultra fine stockings or tights) and you will be fine.

TaupeFox · 23/03/2026 19:46

Older Catholic ladies will take note believe me. My mum went mad at her niece for showing a little bit too much cleavage in church. Lol

I hope her niece told her to mind her own business! Nothing wrong with showing off the boobies at an Irish wedding.

ahsurelookit · 26/03/2026 12:06

This arrived today. I love it. I feel a lot more comoftable and happy in it.

I had to get a size too big since it was the last one. The belt takes in the waist but I think I will have to have a small alteration on the shoulders.

Love it though!!

That is a lovely colour, OP - thankfully, you won't have to worry about people throwing stones at you and yelling, "Harlot!" at the wedding! It does need a tidy up around the shoulders by a good tailor but its always best to buy bigger and get it fitted. You are going to look gorgeous, have a lovely time!
