Another wedding guest one sorry!!

I am part of the grooms family. I will be doing one church reading and will be in a few pictures. I bought this and loved it. But now I am thinking it is too much? I am a size 14, 5'6'' tall, my bum/ bust measurements are equal and my waist is defined. I'm 36

I don't think it would be appropriate to have uncovered shoulders for an Irish church wedding. It's a nice dress for going out though.

It’s honestly so weird when people give advice like this when it’s blatantly obvious it’s not from a place of actual experience!

YourOnMute · 16/03/2026 17:47

No such thing as too much.

TheToteBagLady · 16/03/2026 17:49

I’m laughing at all those saying it isn’t appropriate for a church wedding.

Having been to many Irish weddings and communions, I would consider it rather demure 🤣

Joking aside, it’s beautiful

I've been to many an Irish Catholic wedding in Liverpool where they know how glam up - but have never seen anyone do a reading in such a dress!

Please read the thread, the wedding is in Ireland. As an Irish person in Ireland, I can tell you it's perfectly fine.

sunsetsites · 16/03/2026 17:51

You can spot the English a mile off on this thread 😂

Livelaughlurgy · 16/03/2026 17:52

You might need a lil red fascinator. Only problem is you might be cold, you might need a wrap of some sort. Although if in Dublin skip the fascinator.

MeganM3 · 16/03/2026 17:58

If you like it - wear it! Gone are the days of adapting everything to fit in with the church. Who cares. It’s 2026. Go as you are, however you feel great. Everyone’s going to be looking at the happy couple - and if that’s the most OTT outfit out of the congregation, then what a boring bunch.

Forevercalm · 16/03/2026 18:00

It's beautiful OP. Irish here and can assure you it's not too much for a church wedding. Personally. I think CoE is more conservative than Catholic churches.

TealReader · 16/03/2026 18:00

Yes it’s fine. Irish. Attend many weddings. You’ll fit right in!

God love them, the poor repressed Puritans. I think many of them would die of fright at an Irish wedding! But once over the shock would have an absolute blast.

Granddaughter of an Irish Catholic here, red is an absolute no go for a church wedding unless you want all the elders referring to you as “that harlot”.

mikado1 · 16/03/2026 18:06

Irish here - absolutely fine. Love red to a wedding. Friend wire a full length strapless scarlet dress to my wedding, she was fab. Enjoy it!

I’m Irish and have been to lots of weddings in Ireland. I think it’s gorgeous OP and not too much at all. I don’t buy into “rules” on colours etc. I think go for it. Gorg.

Granddaughter of an Irish woman really isn’t the badge you think it is and your ‘knowledge’ is absolutely not reflective of contemporary Irish society.

WappityWabbit · 16/03/2026 18:12

I’m in Ireland and this sort of dress is perfectly fine for a church wedding. We’re not as uptight as the Brits!

I’m guessing those saying otherwise don’t actually live in Ireland. 😂

Exactly

OP, I think it's totally fine for an Irish wedding. My only concern is that you might freeze to death! I would want a fur type jacket over the top

FedAndWatered · 16/03/2026 18:22

RosesAndHellebores · 16/03/2026 16:57

Too much in my opinion. DD, DS and DIL have been regular wedding attendersnfor the last couple of years. I am pretty sure both dd and dil would think that inappropriate. We are England, CofE, and it woukd be regarded as too much. Too bright, too much flesh.

But in England people don’t really get dressed for weddings. Not dressed dressed. In Ireland, people get really dressed. There’s a definite cultural difference.

I think it’s fine.

NotEnoughtGin · 16/03/2026 18:24

I'm Irish and I think it's grand. Just need a pashmina to cover your shoulders if you feel it more suitable in the church

Waffleswithhothoney · 16/03/2026 18:31

Clearly a lot of people who haven’t been to an Irish wedding! I read the thread before looking at the dress and it’s definitely not too revealing or over the top. If anything you could go more form fitting. Colour is perfect, you are way more covered than other guests may be. Fab!

I am also a size 14 and had two babies back to back, I tried this on recently and the bust was very generous, the bones of the body were really flattering and the trouser part didn't hug my spare tyre!
