Another wedding guest one sorry!!

I am part of the grooms family. I will be doing one church reading and will be in a few pictures. I bought this and loved it. But now I am thinking it is too much? I am a size 14, 5'6'' tall, my bum/ bust measurements are equal and my waist is defined. I'm 36

Will the guests all be Irish? Just wondered, because there seems to be a lot of angst amongst our British friends about the suitability of certain outfits for weddings across the pond. Most of the glad rags are absolutely gorgeous to Irish eyes (!) but the amount of negative comment about colour, style, length, use of wraps./pashminas, fascinators, shoes, bags you name it, is unreal.

And the British weddings end before midnight usually. Have you ever heard the like in your life!. 4am in the residents bar singing "The bog down in the Valley O" is the best part of any wedding IMO.

Go on and enjoy yourself, the dress is grand, I would slip a wrap on though for the altar - but only for that bit.

I don't think it would be appropriate to have uncovered shoulders for an Irish church wedding. It's a nice dress for going out though.

It’s not a concern here…trust me

Decorhate · 16/03/2026 17:16

@DappledThings My point was that only this one person wore a bright colour so they drew your eyes to them in photos. If it was a summer wedding with lots of people wearing colours it wouldn't have mattered so much but it was a black tie wedding with everyone else in the bridal
party wearing dark coloured dresses.

Deadringer · 16/03/2026 17:18

Also Irish and also think its fine, in fact I think its perfect! Its not too short, its not revealing, it looks very dressy to me. Style and colours tend to be very varied at irish weddings, wear it and enjoy yourself.

Not a problem in the slightest.
Its fabulous for an Irish wedding.
We are a very glamourous lot.

Favouritefruits · 16/03/2026 17:20

I think it’s too much with the style and the colour together, if they did it in a pastel colour I’d think that would be fine!

So?

Clearly the person in the bright dress didn't mind standing out and I doubt it put anyone in any doubt as to who the bride was.

If everyone else chose to wear dark colours, which makes it sound very funeral, that's up to them.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/03/2026 17:22

It’s not at all ‘immodest’. But the long flap of fabric over the left arm makes me think it’d be very hard to find anything that would work over it if the weather isn’t fine. A jacket probably wouldn’t work, a wrap would probably look messy and fussy with that under it. It’s just a bit of a weird shape tbh.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 16/03/2026 17:22

Not bad for a night out, although maybe a bit too Kat Slater for a wedding. Having said that, you'd probably find my choices boring by comparison.

Joanissy · 16/03/2026 17:23

Definitely wear it! I am Irish, live in Ireland and have been to loads of weddings both here and abroad… Irish wedding guests always dress up to the nines. It’s not revealing and if you like it wear it!

Bolonese · 16/03/2026 17:24

I havent posted on MN in an age but logged back in just to respond to this 😂I am born and raised in England, now living in Ireland. I felt SO underdressed and dowdy for the first couple of Irish weddings I went to. Got the memo eventually and now I go for full out glam / colour / flattering shape. I love this dress OP, I assume you have dark hair based on the spanish comparison and think that colour will be absolutely fab on you. A cold shoulder looks great too if you have a larger bust and the shape will flow over your curves. Perfect choice of dress!

Ophir · 16/03/2026 17:24

It’s just the colour, too scarlet

Scottish here, so also think the style is fine, people here go all out you, none of these jackets or cardis 😄

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 16/03/2026 17:25

Ireland in May - is it going to be a drafty church as well? Oh your priority should be something you can easily pop a jacket over. (Which will ensure there will be a freak heatwave!).

Coast have a few other nice dresses in their sale you could easily get a nice jacket to go over.

Play it safe, aim to be warm - shivering is never a good look!

gingercat02 · 16/03/2026 17:25

The question for an Irish wedding is more "is it enough?" If you're Irish OP you know we go all out. There is none of the English bridezilla angst.
It's a great dress, go for it.

krustykittens · 16/03/2026 17:28

Irish here and I think it is fabulous! But then what do I know, I live in maxi dresses and have some very glamourous ones for weddings!

Westfacing · 16/03/2026 17:29

I know many brides are strapless, off the shoulder etc but the look of that dress, which I like, isn't right for a church reading!

Teaforthetotal · 16/03/2026 17:31

Statsquestion1 · 16/03/2026 16:51

As someone who is in Ireland I can tell you it’s absolutely fine! Brides wear strapless dresses all the time so no need to cover shoulders etc. red is fine too.

This. Enjoy.

Renamed · 16/03/2026 17:34

I have seen that colour worn to funerals in Ireland (the important thing is to turn up). So I can’t see why not a wedding. A chiffon wrap in say pale pink would tone it down…

It's absolutely fine for an Irish Catholic wedding.

Allthecheeseplease · 16/03/2026 17:36

Irish person - it's perfect. I don't know what churches some of these people are attending but it's perfectly fine for an irish wedding.

Savvysix1984 · 16/03/2026 17:37

It’s lovely. People get very dressed up for Irish weddings so I think it’s perfect.

MissyB1 · 16/03/2026 17:43

I agree with pp, it’s a bit Kat Slater. But if you like it then just wear it, I doubt anyone at the wedding is going to be judging.

sunsetsites · 16/03/2026 17:44

No too much, Irish wedding fashion typically is much more extra than UK or English weddings.

wishingonastar101 · 16/03/2026 17:45

I actually like it! Very Spanish Flamenco... you could wear tappy shoes and do a dance.

Westfacing · 16/03/2026 17:45

I've been to many an Irish Catholic wedding in Liverpool where they know how glam up - but have never seen anyone do a reading in such a dress!
