Is this dress dated?

I bought it in 2015, Star by Julian McDonald. It’s floaty fabric with light texture, kimono style. I loved it at the time but can work out if I am just nostalgic about it and it’s quite dated, or is it one of those style that has never been in / out of trend and therefore is as current as it ever was?

Is this dress dated?

Seems OK to me and does not say a particular era/time.

TiredofLDN · 07/03/2026 17:31

I think it’s quite dated- and not in that cool 90s/ early millennial way that’s very on trend- sorry OP!

lindyloo57 · 07/03/2026 17:32

I don't think the style is dated, but I wouldn't wear a dress length on the knee, I'm petite 5ft 2 so for me it's midi maxi or above the knee.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/03/2026 17:32

I had a similar kimono style but tighter dress from ASOS from about 7 years ago I think.

catin8oot5 · 07/03/2026 17:33

I like it

Nitgel · 07/03/2026 17:34

Its lovely. Wish I had bought it :)

Bluegreenbird · 07/03/2026 17:37

It’s lovely. Suits your figure. Very simple and timeless. Depends if you’re going to a fashionista event or just out with normal people I suppose.

LancashireButterPie · 07/03/2026 17:37

Looks like a classic to me.

BurningOutt · 07/03/2026 17:37

The dress is not dated at all and looks great on you! What will affect whether or not it looks dated is the shoes - I’m sure you wore it with stilettos when you bought it, but I’d go either interesting flats/possibly platforms/low heeled sling backs now.

janietreemore · 07/03/2026 17:38

Who cares, it is elegant and suits you well.

Catcatcatcatcat · 07/03/2026 17:39

I like it, I agree with @BurningOutt that you shouldn’t wear it with heels.

Thelankyone · 07/03/2026 17:39

It’s rhe length that makes it dated, I’m not sure it was ever really in trend, but it’s not a classic, if you like it wear it though, it’s just a bit meh, perfectly fine but I’d not be sayinf wow great dress.

Echobelly · 07/03/2026 17:39

As you say, it's not a shape that's ever been super in or out of style - unlike, say, a bandage dress or a prairie dress - and also it really suits you, so I'd say wear it.

wherearethesnacks · 07/03/2026 17:41

I like it.

Jellytotsapplepie · 07/03/2026 17:43

No, its lovely and timeless

its a keeper

I have just bought a pair of silver toe post kitten heel mule sandals, which help to give it more modern edge. When first bought, it came with a tie belt and I wore it with platform stilettos. Lately, I wore it with flat quilted leather slides on holiday or flat gold sandals and a slim waist belt, Reiss H shaped. The buckle is gold, so not ideal with new sandals.

I do think wearing stuff like that is quite ageing though, it makes me think you’re an older woman just by your dress. And likely older than you are. I’d also assume it’s something you have had a very long time in your wardrobe, I’d not think it was new,

It doesn’t give if a more modern edge, I’m sorry, I know irs not whay you want ri hear, but no point on lying, it just makes me think older again,

Overtheatlantic · 07/03/2026 17:46

Wow. There’s nothing wrong with being an older woman. It’s a beautiful classic.

NotOneMore · 07/03/2026 17:46

I am short and if falls below the knee on a slim part, so not exactly a midi but also not the dowdy on the knee. I am talking myself out of donating it, I think, it feels like it’s given me the ick.

You look great in it @NotOneMore .
It's not current but it's stylish.

I’d donate. I’m surprised you wore it on holiday, it’s not a holiday dress. I think unless money is very tight, you can do a lot better.

Floisme · 07/03/2026 17:47

I wore a 1960s A line, on-the-knee skirt yesterday and it felt surprisingly modern so maybe we’re fashion soothsayers op. I like your dress.

scobe · 07/03/2026 17:49

Dont think this was ever fashionable or a trend so isn’t unfashionable or dated now. Don’t mean that in a disparaging way, it’s just a dress you either like or you don’t. I like the top half, the bottom is too long imo and makes it difficult to wear in a modern way ie with chunkier soles, loafers or flats.

Justwrong68 · 07/03/2026 17:49

Looks great!
