Small (inexpensive) things that make you feel happy.

Slightly inspired by the keyring thread: what small things do you have that make you feel more put-together? I have two:
• a small pencil case, so when I go to meetings I'm not scrabbling about in the bottom of my bag, and
• I got rid of my tatty old shopping bags and bought some in nice colours with ridiculous 70s patterns on them. They always make me feel happy when I use them.

Chocolate fingers, nice pens and pencils, candles, flowers, White Company body wash and candles.

deeahgwitch · 01/03/2026 09:41

Pale pink tulips.

Really decent shower oils/gels.
It makes the basic task of getting ready more indulgent

(I have also escaped an abusive relationship. I remember I used to cry when i went to the hairdresser's during those years as it was a rare moment of someone taking care of me. Keep treating yourself, unapologetically Flowers)

And space masks

Making a huge batch of winter soup (carrots, onion, celery, swede, spices, stock, red lentils), portioning it up and putting it in the freezer. It costs almost nothing, tastes great and keeps me going for ages. I enjoy spending time in the kitchen listening to the radio too.

Soup….feeds the soul as well as the body!

Walking around the garden looking for flowers just on the point of opening. 😁

Really lovely cups. I have a couple from Oliver Bonas, a Nespresso x Liberty glass one & a lovely blue/cream one which is literally the perfect 1st coffee of the day cup.

I think after escaping a long and unhappy marriage, I am now enjoying finding joy in the small things.

Crikey! Where is this gym at £27!!!!

I pay a little more - £35 - but sounds v similar. It’s the local council gym which, where I live, is absolutely brilliant with great equipment. I’ve lived in my town for 10 years but it was a little bit hidden so I only found out about it a couple of years ago 🙄

I’ve had this plain summer dress from Boden for about twelve years. I get tons of compliments when I wear it. The colour, style and length all work for me I guess. A stylist would probably know why - I don’t!

I think this meets the “inexpensive” brief in the OP when cost per wear is considered.

I've got a dress from Dorothy Perkins (!) that I've had for donkeys years, it's not my usual colour (a weird burnt salmon type colour), or style, or length, but I always ALWAYS get compliments when I wear it. God knows why?! But yes I have the same 😊, don't question it!

Snag tights. I've just bought 10 more pairs in plain black and it makes me happy knowing I always have a good pair of tights to wear.

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 01/03/2026 13:12

A hand mask. I like the effect on my hands and it also means that my hands are out of action, so I can have a guilt free afternoon on the sofa, listening to an audio book or watching a film.

Sometimes, I tell my family that it is a special, expensive hand mask which must be worn for five hours and so there is no point in asking me to do anything at all.😀

Where do you use the Rosehip
oil? What does it help? @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

JaceLancs · 01/03/2026 13:30

New underwear for going on holiday
The perfect purse! - Not found the perfect handbag yet, although a recent one is pretty good
Perfume minis or free samples
A good find in a charity shop - most recent for me was a Hobbs sweater dress for a fiver

Mimosaandonwards · 01/03/2026 13:44

Doing my nails every weekend. Nothing fancy, remove clear varnish, file and buff, nail strengthening treatment, cuticle cream, reapply strengthening clear varnish. It doesn't take long but makes me feel ready for the week ahead. I used to run a commercial kitchen so having nice, presentable hands feels like a treat these days.

On my face before bed.

Peonyperfection · 01/03/2026 13:58

Listening to podcasts and audiobooks whilst I complete chores. I wouldn’t get time to listen otherwise. Mornings whilst making packed lunches it’s usually news podcasts, so I don’t feel my brain is wasting away. During the day, whilst driving an audiobook and often a true crime podcast at night.

I use Borrowbook which is free through my library and Apple Podcasts/bbc sounds so free.

HaveYouHadYourBreak · 01/03/2026 14:11

A little bunch of 99p daffs in a funky vase. Always make me smile and happy.

I'd put them all over my house but we have a cat so I have to make do with a few vases in places she cant get to.

Clean and tidy the house
Morning walks by the beach

Cuddling and stroking my pets
Sea swims
A really early night
Waking up early
Exercise makes the biggest impact to my happiness.
