Is this too casual for a wedding?

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 09:46

Attending a spring wedding and trying to get sorted rather than leaving too late like I usually do.

Me - 40, Mum of 2 under 5 (who will be present and DH is best man so I need to be wearing something I can "run around" in while he's on duty, size 12/14, 5"2, wide at the hips, small waste, ugly legs.

The wedding venue is a big garden space (with inside area) so it's basically flowers and greenery everywhere.

Would this dress be suitable, or is it too plain? I could possibly wear this on other occasions and the price tag is just right.

Everything I'm finding that I like is over £100, which just isn't in my budget unfortunately, not for something I'll get little wear out of.

I'd welcome other suggestions if there's something else you think would be better.

(please don't suggest Vinted. I've given up trying to buy anything other than kids stuff on Vinted due to the wardrobe full of clothing that doesn't fit and now needs to be re-sold).

I think it’s nice for a summer garden wedding.

Although it does say that the model is 5’10, so it will be quite a bit longer on you - basically ankle length. Which might be fine, but worth noting.

WelshCakeLover · 25/02/2026 09:50

its a little plain when your hubby is the best man but its still really lovely! its nice as I defo agree you can wear it for other occasions or even just a nice excuse to wear it for a nice day out 😊 get some nice gold bangles and earrings to jazz it up a bit and you'll be fine! its lovely OP

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 25/02/2026 09:59

Have you tried it on?

I think it’s fine for the event you describe (though the pink may be better in photographs against all the greenery). It’s not madly exciting from the front, but the shoulders and back are fab. My only reservation is that it might be a bit straight up and down for someone with an hourglass waist/ hip ratio. I don’t think the length is an issue, as it should be easy to have shortened if necessary.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/02/2026 10:00

I think it’s fine.

Denim4ever · 25/02/2026 10:06

It's nice, my only reservations are that it looks better in the pink, that those tie back dresses can have a hump back effect if you have to wear a blazer because it's not warm enough without, also empire line don't always work with blazers or jackets line wise

ElsieJay · 25/02/2026 10:19

I think it’s lovely ,and much prefer the green version.
Easy to scale it up for the wedding with jewellery etc but also you’ll get a lot of wear out of it in the summer (when it finally arrives).
Wedding venue sounds quite relaxed , and if you’re wrangling two under 5’s you don’t want to be trussed up in a more formal outfit.
Hope you have a great time.

FlorenceBlack · 25/02/2026 10:23

I think it’s perfectly ok for the occasion. I’m not keen on the cut of the armhole but that might be my own personal fussiness knowing that my bra would probably show.

CointreauVersial · 25/02/2026 10:28

That's pretty, and definitely not too casual with a bit of jewellery and some nice sandals (rather than those beige boats the model is wearing). I love the Nobody's Child empire line dresses, as they are super-flattering.

MiddleAgedDread · 25/02/2026 10:31

I think it's nice and the sort of dress you could dress up with jewelry, jacket, heels and matching bag etc for a wedding but also wear with flat shoes or trainers on a daily basis. The green is much nicer than the pink.

CopeNorth · 25/02/2026 10:32

It’s lovely. Maybe the green would look nice with gold shoes / bag

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 10:38

Thank you, there's been a few points highlighted which I hadn't considered so that is helpful.

I haven't tried it on (live back of beyond so everything has to be ordered in). It might look terrible on my frame, but if the consensus is it would ok for a the wedding then I'll try it as a starting point. I could always have the length taken up if it's a bit too long on me.

Unfortunately pink is absolutely not my colour, green on the other hand is. Again, hadn't occurred that I might blend into the scenery - might come in useful when I want to hide from my children 😂

Why do NC put such ugly/odd footwear with their dresses. What are those things! I'll aim for something a little less slipper like.

I don't really like it and it's viscose, but would be OK for a fairly informal wedding. You could probably get something better.

Models's height is 5'10" - she wears a UK size 8. Wearing length is: 130cm

Hate to be that person, but it's waist not waste.
(My waistline does have some waste Smile)

Sidebeforeself · 25/02/2026 10:47

It’s fine but not that exciting. I know it’s not your special day but I always like dressing up for weddings . This is just a nice summer dress but that’s all.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 25/02/2026 11:06

Hmm … Neither of those are particularly spring-like. Bit dark. (Although I love an elegant black dress for a wedding.)

Morepositivemum · 25/02/2026 11:20

I actually adore it! Beautiful!!

Daffodilstime · 25/02/2026 11:28

It’s ok but nothing special.

Yes I agree .
It’s really not for a wedding & especially with your husband being best man .
I’ve also attended weddings when my kids were little & with me .
You can still wear something dressy & comfy & be able to run around after the kids .

Jillwiththefrill · 25/02/2026 11:33

I don't care about the type of fabric. It's a dress I may only wear once, and as my OP states, I don't have a huge budget.

@NamingNoNames you said about finding better, but didn't offer any further useful suggestions? Also, really no need to highlight what is obviously a typo. If you hate to be that person, just just don't be.

@Starlight1979 thanks for those suggestions - bonus points for prices! I must admit, both are very slightly outside what I'd normally wear, (although I do like the green one), but I may just order the green (other out of stock in my size) and see how it looks on.

It's pleasant but not really wedding attire.

Evergreen21 · 25/02/2026 11:37

It is lovely for a spring wedding but as your dh is best man perhaps not dressy enough? That being said having your makeup and hair done, nice shoes and bag would lift it. If it's on a shortlist I'd order and ay least try it on. I have a similar shape to you and would be concerned it would be fitted on the hips as it does look more straight up and down from that particular photo. I'm going to order it for taking with me on holiday so thanks op!

If you happen to feel like exploring other options … I filtered on Hurr (rental) for size 14, green dress - lots came up but this is a bit wow:

I think it's really lovely and perfect for a wedding. Love it in the green.

There's nothing wrong with viscose - quite the opposite.

Why would you only wear it once? It's fine for a wedding but unless you never leave the house for any social purposes why wouldn't you wear it again?

user1492757084 · 25/02/2026 12:10

It's lovely.
Dress it up with gold, pointed sling backs, jewellery and a pashmina..
