Seriously who wears these. Yet another collection ruined by the dreaded puff sleeve. Stop

Presumably you look good in it. Thats what flattering means, it means it does you a service, not a disservice

If that is what "flattering" means why is any dress or brand which doesn't "show off your lovely figure" met with howls of derision by so many posters? No matter how much the wearer likes it.

I've just had posters falling over themselves to tell me how "unflattering" a navy silk taffetta Cabbages and Roses dress is. It's an amazing dress on, the structuring is complicated and will have been difficult to sew, like Henlake's dress, it feels good to wear.

Ive no idea, Im not them

KarriTreeSullivan · 18/02/2026 21:55

PhaedraWas · 18/02/2026 12:41

Indeed. And it's not as if there isn't masses of other options.

Agreed, it's like half of the people on this thread have never heard of the internet, despite literally being on it!

There are masses of clothes of all varieties in all price brackets from a multitude of shops, if you don't like puff sleeves just don't buy them! There's a myriad, a plethora an abundance of other choices!

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/02/2026 08:36

I like a subtle vampires wife-esque puffed sleeve. I am wearing a dress with that style today actually. Anything more ‘puffed’ though is not practical for those of us in a cold and wet country (Scotland) as you can’t comfortably wear anything over them.

I couldn't agree more. I've just been for a look at Zara and Uniqlo in case I'd missed something: plenty of plain sleeves as well as sleeves of every shape.

I don't remember there ever been as much choice as there is now. And if there really isn't anything you like then it's never been easier to buy second hand (I thought everyone on here was on Vinted?) And yet I don't think S&B has ever been moanier.

SuperGinger · 19/02/2026 09:43

Looking like Bo Peep isn't exactly a fashion aspiration.

Nitgel · 19/02/2026 09:51

I linked the dress from.jigsaw as I liked it but it would be nicer without the dreaded sleeve. Zara and the other shops are fast fashion. I'd rather invest.

You can buy literally anything you want these days, the claim that you cannot buy a fitted sleeve is nonsense.

Thats not strictly true. Find a nice slim fitting well made womens chino.

Ive got 4 pairs upstairs, all from Next, probably got them last year. Petite beause then they dont swamp you, even though Im not petit everything is massive and long I find. I bought them in all 4 colours. They'll do me forever

Shortpoet · 19/02/2026 09:59

I suit a puff sleeve. Not too stiff or puffy in the shoulder though. Just a little extra volume, preferably stopping near elbow.
even though I have big boobs, a gentle puff sleeve seems to balance me.

The worst are cap sleeves (they hit the arm at widest point and most unflattering angle and make me look like a box).
Second worse are bell sleeves with loads of volume at the wrist. I have short arms and they drown me. I look like a kid playing dress up in adult clothes.

Pain in the arse when wearing a nice tailored coat !! Makes the arms look lumpy !! And have to swap out for oversized shaped one !!

I do not suit puff sleeves at all. I tried on a really nice (on the hanger) Nobody’s Child dress recently and was immediately humbled in the changing room because I looked like Anne sodding Boleyn.

In a moment of madness I bought a Nobody’s child puffy sleeve, smocked, ankle length, full skirted dress in a crisp black cotton.

Never worn it. Its only use might be if I am ever cast in a play as a Victorian lady’s maid! Just needs a white pinny to complete the look.

Not sure even someone in Vinted would want it.

Nitgel · 19/02/2026 10:07

Well imo they're not well made I had hopes for Hobbs but they were odd fitting

Can dropped waists go into the pit too please.

Agree. Very unflattering.

Also please add dresses and skirts with pockets. They just add extra bulk right on the hip/thigh area. Doesn’t seem huge, but I have removed some and the difference is noticeable.

Floisme · 19/02/2026 10:36

I've no intention of being drawn into 2nd hand Top Trumps but I've being doing it since the '70s. And if anyone wants to see what having little or no choice really looks like then I recommend northern towns circa 1974.

idk, sometimes I like to dress down but sometimes I like to wear outfits that look straight up like a cosplay from a different era!
Trust me, somebody would buy it!!LOL😂

I would probably wear it if they did one in leopard 😂

I mean if you’ve tried basically every slim fitting chino on the high street and the higher end high street and they don’t fit well the most logical conclusion is that style isn’t suited to you.

NeverTeaTea · 19/02/2026 13:29

I don’t think shops should stop selling them because they don’t suit me personally, but I do wish the fashion would pass so there weren’t quite so many tops and dresses ruined (for me) by big puffy sleeves.

Surely one can have an opinion on ‘style and beauty’?
