Seriously who wears these. Yet another collection ruined by the dreaded puff sleeve. Stop

OP posts:
EvelynBeatrice · 17/02/2026 13:11

Could be worse … could be ‘leg o’ mutton’ like my bridesmaid dress early 90s - shudder….

EvelynBeatrice · 17/02/2026 13:22

Actually, the Anne dress
depicted above is more of a leg o mutton than a puff which is shorter rather than full arm surely.

EvelynBeatrice · 17/02/2026 13:24

And I also dislike short voluminous dresses with puffed sleeves on grown women. I think they look like Grayson Perry tributes. But each to their own. I love the varieties you see in the U.K. In some other countries everyone is much more muted and uniform.

henlake7 · 17/02/2026 13:36

So basically 'I hate puff sleeves because I have X body shape'
or 'I love puff sleeves because I have Y body shape'
in other words maybe its not the sleeves that suck!😁

I love a big puff sleeve or balloon sleeve (hate trailing/bell sleeves though coz I wash my hands alot). I have quite a few dresses that have big puff sleeves and high necks too, but Im fairly slim with a small chest so it works.
Im abit iffy on short puffs though, very few grown women have skinny enough arms to cope with a mini puff IMO.

NeverTeaTea · 17/02/2026 13:43

I hate them. Definitely to do with my body shape. I’m tall and have a slight inverted triangle shape (shoulders slightly broader than hips)

I really miss fitted sleeves - no puff or volume of any kind - as it gives me more of an hourglass shape whereas the puff sleeves make my shoulders look even broader.

To be honest, the styles on the high street are all wrong for ne. Not my era! I like fitted waists, proper tailoring (not oversized), fitted tops, pencil skirts or fuller skirts that hit below the knee (NOT mid calf). I’m waiting patiently for a change - no more puff sleeves, shapeless long dresses, boxy tops, weird carrot jeans. One can hope!

KarriTreeSullivan · 17/02/2026 13:45

I love a puff sleeve! And wear lots, although at the more subtle 1940's subtle end of the puff sleeve spectrum, I just love the look and I think they possibly balance out my narrow shoulders, not so much the massive voluminous ones though.

There are absolutely tons of different styles out there and an enormous wealth of designers, shops and styles for all budgets and tastes. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone should 'stop'. What a ridiculous thing to say, we all like and enjoy different styles and that's wonderful! The choices out there these days is wonderful, so much variety and, usually, much less judgment for not following the latest trends than in the past. People who criticise other peoples style choices are just mean, grumpy and rude.

Some people don’t dress for the male view of a women’s body. Dressing can be be fun when you aren’t obsessing over an arbitrary version of “flattering”.

I’m not male, and don’t dress myself for the male gaze (grey hair in a buzzcut, no make-up, comfy clothes etc) and it was such a bizarrely proportioned garment that I still remember it months later.

What a bizarre comment?

Whats the 'male view' got to do with whether something is flattering or not?

Do you regularly wear things that make you look awful?

Quite a lot if "flattering" means, as it so often does on here, "showing off your lovely figure" or variations on that.

Why are you suggesting women not wearing fitted clothing makes them look awful?

”Flattering” is almost always referred to in terms of showing off the female form.
Women don’t need to show off their tits, waist or how skinny they’re are in order to not look awful.

You are the one who replied to me. The post I commented on initially talked about how something that added bulk and volume was unflattering. You are the one who stated something not being flattering meant “looking awful”.
You’re being obtuse to suggest “flattering” to the body doesn’t mean highlighting the female shape and being fitted.

Oh dear, what an assumption. Ive already said upthread I prefer the big sleeves, the puff. Reason = its flattering

I asked 'why would someone wear something that isnt flattering' because the post I replied to suggested that its great to wear things and not worry about whether they're flattering.

Im afraid if you think that 'flattering' means showing off your body or being for the male gaze thats on you and in your head. Its not part of how I make my outfits up.

I am with you. I have quite square shoulders and puff sleeves look awful - like an American football player.

Yes! Puffed sleeves make me look like a beefy, American football player because of my wide shoulders! Not a good look as I am short as well.

On someone with narrow shoulders, they look so pretty. Would love to be able to wear them but I can't because of the beefy shoulder look! 🙁

HelloClouds · 18/02/2026 10:41

Party dresses for little girls in the sixties usually had puff sleeves. I looked silly in them then and I'm certainly not going to wear them now!

Lifeomars · 18/02/2026 10:43

Threeabreast · 12/02/2026 21:29

Yes. puffy sleeves but I raise you angel sleeves. How to ruin an otherwise decent top.

Glad someone mentioned angel sleeves, many times I have seen a dress or top I like only to discover those flippy flappy curtain like sleeves ruining it.

I bought a pretty puffy sleeved blouse, felt good in it, then wore it for some professional work photos. Haven't put it on since, it made me look like a marshmallow!

I bought one and a friend said: Are you auditioning to be an extra in Downton?
I haven't worn it since!

One of my favourite dresses is oversized, huge puff sleeves and a high neckline (and covered in pink and red flowers!). It def doesnt appeal to the male gaze and I doubt most women would find it flattering either.
However it makes me smile everytime I wear it and I just feel good in it.
So not everything has to be 'flattering' or have sex appeal, this is why I like the concept of dopamine dressing!

TellingBone · 18/02/2026 10:57

I agree.

May I add a plea to stop with the cap sleeve for women's tops? Why do men get all the proper short sleeve tees? [I buy men's tees now but they're often too narrow at hip level]

Presumably you look good in it. Thats what flattering means, it means it does you a service, not a disservice it has nothing to do with 'male gaze', this is posters own interpretations of this.

My only issue with a lot of these voluminous items is the risk of catching it on the gas hob, has happened a few times to me

Oh and wet sleeve. Hate that.

Hodgemollar · 18/02/2026 12:04

I love how the general take is “I look large in puff sleeves so shops shouldn’t sell them”.

If that is what "flattering" means why is any dress or brand which doesn't "show off your lovely figure" met with howls of derision by so many posters? No matter how much the wearer likes it.

I've just had posters falling over themselves to tell me how "unflattering" a navy silk taffetta Cabbages and Roses dress is. It's an amazing dress on, the structuring is complicated and will have been difficult to sew, like Henlake's dress, it feels good to wear.

I think that's the problem, unless you are waiflike there is the danger of looking like a milkmaid.

I am what you might call waiflike, and I promise you these aren't good proportionally on me either - I look like I'm all shoulder! The rest of me ends up looking even thinner by comparison, which is not what I'm going for!

Indeed. And it's not as if there isn't masses of other options.
