Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

DKNY
Michael Kors
Juicy Couture (if that's even still a thing)

I have a dry robe. I couldn’t care less
what people think when I’m warm and dry in 3 degrees and horizontal rain.

GoldenishFish · 17/02/2026 12:39

Pandora probably, I've always found them weird.

Because these days it's associated with middle-aged men trying to look hard by 'getting the badge in'. Just as Burberry's brand image suffered due to the check pattern becoming ubiquitous to the point of downmarket

Interesting, the customers in the SI shop in Florence were very different.

Perhaps. But terrace/Casuals culture came from fans going on European awaydays and bringing back brands that weren't otherwise available here, and therefore became signifiers for a very different demographic. If I saw a man of a certain age wearing a Stone Island jacket here, the kind with the visible badge, I wouldn't think 'how nice, they've been to Florence', I'd think 'ah, that's a guy who buys touted tickets without realising why others look down on it, swears at referees and likes to slag off women's football online'. Such is what sociologists refer to as 'prole drift'.

Same as how Canada Goose is a prestige, worn by middle class professionals brand in the US, but in Ireland is largely now associated with drug-dealers and roadmen.

Brightandblustery

I asked him if he knows where his indicators are and he looked confused....

Not meaning to be smart but were you mixing it up with Tesla? BMW have their indicators in the same place as any other car except older teslas

I think it was more tongue in cheek, as it seems that BMW drivers dont tend to USE their indicators.....

I do not understand the dry robe hate. I don't have one, I just think they're pretty neutral, functional things.

I reckon someone said something about them once on MN, and people have been parroting it ever since.

Goldie looking chain did a great song about dry robes. Very funny and also those awful tiger hoodie things

This is a light-hearted thread and I'm willing to bet that you make several judgements on a daily basis. We all do.

Radley and Ted Baker. Over priced nasty designs.

The Radley thing has me a bit confused.

I can see it being a bit staid and old-ladyish AND also I can see it as a draw for young girls sort of 9-13 who think the little dog is cute but also want something that has a grown-up styling in other respects.

But tacky I just cannot see. It seems a really innocent, harmless kind of brand to me.

I guess I associate "tacky" with insta, bleachy highlights, botox, and bums stuffed into lycra.

It's an odd one. Mid range, well made, long lasting bags. The cross body pocket bags are great for keeping phones, etc safe.

Yes, It isn't my style personally, but I don't see it as tacky at all. Probably more a bit "tame" if I had to label it.

I don't think it's tacky either. I do think the boxy, black leather squared-off bags like the below hark back to the time when we were all dressing business casual to go out, back in the early 2000s - and I don't think it ever managed a proper brand identity. There were a lot of women wearing the more formal bags with sensible waterproofs, jeans and Skechers which looked a bit strange.

I wear whatever I want - I do not give 2 figs what anyone thinks. I hate things that have a brand name on them as they are so pretentious. If your friends are judging you by what you wear, they are not friends. Also your comment ' I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest' Why are you paranoid, and seem and inverted snob - no one gives a shit. Trust me.

Some people do give 2 figs. That's how brands work.

chaosmaker · 06/03/2026 10:43

But you can shop in somewhere like M&S that used to be more expensive for high quality clothes. The prices are still high but the clothes are made in countries not known for good working practices.
But it's branded.......

"No one gives a shit"

Vs

"Things with brand names look pretentious"

Hmm.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 06/03/2026 11:09

I wouldn’t say Radley is tacky either. Not my taste as I really don’t want to walk around with something with dogs on. More staid than old lady.

Anything that shouts its brand at you.

I agree.

I see what you are saying. I hate brand names. I hate showing off labels. In my eyes it looks ridiculous. Maybe I am an oxymoron, who knows.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 13/02/2026 21:06

Not at all. Lots of expensive things can look tasteless and tacky. Even Dolly Parton admitted that it took a lot of money for her to look that cheap.

Sure they can, but I'll bet a lot of people are saying 'tacky' just because it's an expensive brand.

And I got a lot of like and agree emojis for that comment so I'm not the only person who thinks so.

chaosmaker · 17/03/2026 11:14

Branding is tacky.
