Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

I have one, I do use it for paddle boarding and swimming but it's so warm and dry that is been creeping into my day to day wear. I had to laugh as my friend has been mercilessly mocking me for being a dry robe w*nker but when we were in Cornwall I took the older kids body boarding and she ended up putting it on while she was playing on the beach with the younger ones. Anyway I basically had to surgically remove it from her at the end of the week and she's since bought one for walking her dog 😂

Edited

I'd never say w**er - wally is much nicer.

PlumDeNomNomNom · 12/02/2026 11:38

Any brands that claims to be high end but let’s just anybody walk in off the street and make a purchase.

Just why would thy do that? Tacky isn’t even the word of it!

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

Are dog walkers not allowed these?

7238SM · 12/02/2026 11:42

I don't know if they even have their own branded clothes, but anything Boohoo or Shein.

DH and I do swim year round in the sea and wear a dry robe. I didn't go yesterday but asked him to pick up some milk en-route. He refused, came home to get dressed and went out again to be avoid being seen in public in the dry robe.😆

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

Because they are not Japanese, I read an interview with the founder and they are based in Gloucester but wanted to look Japanese, it made me laugh. I quite like the look of their coats but they don't do above a size 16.

To the OP I always thought Bench looked tacky, a girl in my 6th form lived in Bench trackie bums and I couldn't understand why anyone what want to draw attention to their arse by writing a word across it. Louise Vuitton luggage, not so much clothes.

Personally, I find brands which are pretending to be fancier than they really are to be much more tacky than honest cheapo brands.

When I see £40 Pandora trinkets set up in their fancy pink window displays, tricking people into thinking they're walking into a high-end jewellery store - yuck. It's not just tacky, it's exploitative.

I see Pandora as a brand targeting teens and young adults. I don't think it's tacky or exploitative. It provides a nice shopping experience to young people within their price bracket.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/02/2026 11:50

Brands with visible slogans on plus Boohoo, PLT, Oh Polly etc. mass produced probably in China.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/02/2026 11:51

Tiffany and Pandora and I don't care if they DO cost an arm and a leg.

ThatCyanCat · 12/02/2026 11:51

VegBox · 12/02/2026 10:30

Charlotte Tilbury. It's make up for people who drink caramel lattes.

I like some CT products, but I like this description more.

(I don't like caramel lattes.)

weareallqueens · 12/02/2026 11:52

Super dry, although I like a few of their jackets. I’d prefer if you could see the branding. White Fox on adults always turns my head. I like Adanola but it’s quite pricey. All these Marc Jacobs / Gucci / Armani trainers. I’m not a fan of non- trainer brands doing trainers. Stay in your lane! 😂

Pandora does not cost an arm and a leg. Quite the opposite.

Ophy83 · 12/02/2026 11:53

I don't find any brand tacky as such, but particular items from within the brand may be e.g. a dad on the school run always wears this bright white puffy onesie outfit to walk his dog round the park afterwards. It is no doubt expensive as he is into his brands but also looks completely ridiculous (my view of his clothing choices may also be tainted by the fact that he is a nasty bully who was very threatening to one of my mum friends whose son plays for the same football team as his son).

SnakesandKnives · 12/02/2026 11:54

Agree with all the comments on the shouty brands - basically any that have their name on the item in massive letters. Not tacky as much as ‘we’ve got you to pay for something to then advertise us’

especially as @ToadRage said, their name on your arse. Particularly Juicy. It’s just a bit cringeworthy to me.

This!!! We call them dry robe wallies. Especially as we live in the middle of the country, nowhere near the sea, and lakes are hard to come by too!

But why do you care if people find them warm and comfortable and use them for non swimming purposes??? I am genuinely curious why are people so bothered that other people like to wear them in a way that suits them? I don't own one but they look brilliant for watching the kids football, I'm too scared I get judged for wearing it in the wrong place or is it ok to wear it to the football if I also use it for swimming? Or strictly no other purposes allowed?

I saw a woman child and dog in matching ones. In Preston city ( I use the term city loosely) centre.

cantthinkofagoodusername1 · 12/02/2026 11:56

For me, it's less the brand but more the brand display. I don't like loud displays of labels. High end fashion brands with their logos all over hoodies, for example.
My preference is quiet luxury.

manateeplushie · 12/02/2026 11:58

Michael Kors, Ted Baker, Pandora

angelos02 · 12/02/2026 11:59

Anything with a label/brand on is tacky AF. People with money don't need to tell people they have money.

HellonHeels · 12/02/2026 11:59

Anything that plasters its name or logo all over its products.

Because they look like bath robes and are in fact “robes” - the clue is in the name! I don’t judge the dry robe wankers as hard as I judge the PJ’s in Tesco or the hair rollers in public folk, but I definitely put them in the same category. And yes I am a snob with my judgy pants hoiked! 😂

TheRedLid · 12/02/2026 12:01

I hate anything with a brand label and will purposefully choose clothes that don't display any kind of branding. It's all tacky imo.

Stanley Cups
Dry Robes
Sliders outside of the house/pool

I always think of that saying 'Money talks, wealth whispers'

The hair-rollers things is new in London... we get groups of women coming in to central London on the train on the weekends - all with silly tiny suitcases on wheels and their hair in comedy rollers! It's hysterical... hard to tell the kids not to stop and stare when these women look like comedy drag acts.

Verv · 12/02/2026 12:07

I think large emblazoned logo's are tacky, but its less brand specific for me.
Some brands are nothing but logo, so theyre not of interest, others have a divide between loud logos designed to attract the peacocks, and then a more restrained and classic range, which is fine, as brands need customers, and customers need to be catered to.

I do, unfortunately, have a dry-robe - but it was used for sea dipping, and now its used because i live about 2m from the sea, in scotland, and regularly go out with the dog in the howling rain and wind. I dont mind being a dry robe wanker for that, but i wouldnt wear it out of context.
