Brands you think of as tacky

Themammy101 · 12/02/2026 10:19

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Nike. They us trans models instead of female athletes.

This is peak MN... Do you hang around with people with "breeding and class"? Hermes comes to mind is that just for "chavs"?

Peak MN.That post and the post above by MumToad · Yesterday 19:42 although there are plenty of other crackers.

There are clothes and brands I like and those I don't like. That's it.

White Fox is the crown jewel of tackiness right now.

White Fox is the crown jewel of tackiness right now.

I have never seen anyone over the age of 16 wear white fox though.

I would be interested to hear what MN think is the epitome of style. I am always seeing people bang on about the style and quality of Sezane when it’s a lot man made fibres of and quality wise no different to Zara. Each to their own though, right?

SadTimesInFife · 15/02/2026 08:47

What do you mean by tacky?
Anyone got a definition?

JudyBlumesBlubber · 15/02/2026 09:00

For me it’s Louis Vuitton. The quality is poor - compared to other brands or their 1990s stuff - and there are so many plausible fakes, it’s more likely to be fake than not. Gucci has the same issue.

I think Cartier Love bracelets have gone the same way, regrettably as I have one.

Are dog walkers not allowed these?

And parents of children that play sports! I spend a lot of time outside in the rain watching, I love my Superdry dry robe!! I’m surprised people would think of Superdry as a tacky brand, it’s not high end but the quality of their clothes is good - the people I know that choose Superdry aren’t tacky people, they just like being outdoors/have dogs!!

Silvertulips · 15/02/2026 09:43

I was going for BENCH

Hated when they came out - still do

Serensnanna · 15/02/2026 10:11

Agree. Also, didn't they start in Cheltenham....by an English man?

Mykneesareshot · 15/02/2026 10:40

Radley and Ted Baker. Over priced nasty designs.

queenofwandss · 15/02/2026 10:51

For the dry robe haters- how do you know whether people go outdoor swimming or not if you see them in the street?

I wear mine for work (community) as it’s much warmer than the uniform coat and I am not spending 9 hours a day freezing my tits off!

LamonicBibber1 · 15/02/2026 11:18

I have literally bought a (fake, cheap) dry robe as a direct result of this thread, I joked about it but then looked into them and they tick so many boxes for my (wet, rural, coastal, dog) life. I got a fairly thin one which is waterproof and windproof. It is baggy enough to cover any combo of jumpers, trousers, hoodies. Looks practical as all hell!

IT'S ALSO LEOPARD PRINT if that ticks any further fail boxes for the haterz 😂

White Fox has been mentioned a lot here; I only see it on young mums. It makes me wistful, because once I was also a young mum wearing whatever the White Fox equivalent was at the time.

I think a lot of judgement comes from this feeling that we cannot access whatever life experience those people we are "othering" are having. Imagine being lucky enough to possess the confidence needed to wear scrunch leggings. Imagine the joy in going out with your female friends with rollers in, building up the excitement for the night to come, not to catch men's eyes but to have a good day and be together having a laugh. I'd argue that it's so totally ingrained in Scouse culture at this point, that luckily no amount of raised eyebrows is changing that.

Imagine wearing crocs and not having bunions and hammer toes. Imagine your blingy Michael Kors bag holds the keys to the car you proudly saved up for, or keys to the flat you finally managed to rent, or the little wallet containing the inked footprints of a baby you lost. You see what I mean. We are all a lot more than whatever bits of fabric we drape over our otherwise naked bodies!

Applecup · 15/02/2026 11:21

Rolex. Apart from anything the watches are so meh. People wear them for the status and not for the style.

Sezanne, for me, is a triumph of marketing over style and substance.

Nothing you wouldn't find in many other mainstream High Street brands but with a French name slapped on it and modelled in that irritating "I'm so French, just fallen out of bed, can't find my bra, knickers or hairbrush and don't know how to do up my buttons" way.

Well I’m nearly 50 and love my white fox hoody. It’s nice and thick and heavy and comfy when we are having this below zero weather.

I heard about white fox before it became popular near. My Italian relatives went on a New Zealand cruise and all the kids were wearing them. They’re a NZ brand and apparently NZers are good at designing winter clothing for the southern hemisphere who are used to sun. Aussie’s struggle to get decent warm clothes. The family offered to buy my kids one for Xmas that year but my kids declined as they hadn’t seen them over here so didn’t get the hype. Fast forward a few years and everyone has them. They are pricey for us Brit’s to buy as the come from NZ/Oz. But when we went to visit Oz a couple of years ago we bought them, pad about half the UK price, next day delivery as they must also have a warehouse in OZ now.

One of my kids does an outdoor hobby and quite a few of the mums also wear them as they’re warm. So not just the teens.

New Balance is on the list for me from working in a deprived area, heavy benefit reliance, all NB trainer wearers

That's not "tacky", that's just you being a snob.

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

Superdry is British.

Labelledelune · 15/02/2026 12:44

CP, Pandora, juicy couture, Micheal Korrs, I ove British stuff like Fairfax and Favour and Holland and Cooper.

I find Baylis and Harding pretty awful. It is made in china (god knows what it contains as their rules are more lax than ours or the EU) and thin and runny. The pots of sand in hobbycraft play sets contained asbestos up to the Chinese limits which we would not permit.

A lot of high street cosmetics/toiletries are now being made in China (Revolution I know largely manufactures there) but wouldn't be allowed to be sold in the UK/EU if it didn't pass regulations. It's the stuff that gets dropshipped from China, and especially fake makeup, that's the risky stuff.

With the exception of eyeliners which most brands still seem to be having made in Germany.

Labelledelune · 15/02/2026 12:52

Lauralou19 · 13/02/2026 21:02

Burberry
Stanley
River Island (which I loved in my 20’s - has it gone tackier or have I just got older?)🤣
Shein
Any of the online shops with ex Towie influencers flogging their rubbish.

I actually think places like primark, new look etc have moved away from their tacky image. People just go there for good value clothes.

It’s the brands trying too hard to be designer, that always seem tacky to me.

“Burberry” tacky? Maybe the stuff you see but my Burberry waterproof Mac I’ve had for 10 years is definitely not tacky.

I don’t understand what’s wrong with TKMaxx? They do sell a lot of tat but their Gold Label section has some really good deals.

Be careful as some are made just for TK MAX. My sine bought a Vivienne Westwood shirt there, when he went on to sell it on eBay it came back as fake. I saw a handbag in their glass cabinet section, after looking at it I told the manager it was not real.

I think seeing Daniella Westbrook head to toe in Burberry many years ago has stuck with alot of people. There was a stage of chavs wearing Burberry shirts too 🙈 Im sure your waterproof mac is very nice but the brand has definately been tainted by those who wore it. The question was which brands do we associate with being tacky and it’s often not those that are good value (Primark etc).

I wanted a Stanley flask when they first came out, thought they looked nice, good size for taking out for the day, really liked the range of colours (saw them in John Lewis). Wouldn’t buy one now as the brand has also been totally ruined by the influencer lot. I would now associate Stanley flasks with botox, plumped up lips, french bulldogs and long black puffer jackets.

Once a brand is tainted, hard to shake off that image, even if its a good quality, well made product.

I agree anyone should be able to wear whatever they want very happily (and I do).

However, that wasn’t the (lighthearted) question the OP asked. The original question was which brands do we associate with being tacky and lots of brand names in the replies have come up multiple times (Burberry, Michael Kors, River Island, North Face etc).

You can think people should wear whatever they want but also think brands are associated with being tacky. If people still want to wear them, good for them if it makes them happy.

BassBug · 14/02/2026 18:15

I don't wear brands full stop. Such a waste of money and very unethical if you actually look at where their stuff is made. I think a lot of people wear brands to prove a point and I have nothing to prove.

I know you probably mean "designer brands" in particular, but everything is a brand. Just because it hadn't been designed and marketed to high end or fashion-conscious people doesn't mean a marketing team hasn't meticulously tweaked it to be bought by a particular demographic.

I can't help but think of Meryl Streep's "Cerulean" monologue from The Devil Wears Prada.

Or, as Frank Zappa once said I think, "we're all wearing a uniform".
