Anyone also crazy about this Dune bag?

I know it’s very similar to the Bottega Venetta Hop.

I saw it for the first time yesterday, they’ve got some lovely colours and I’m especially inclined towards either the light brown or the blush pink. Reviews on their website are good but would love to hear any MNetters opinions, especially those who have the bag!

I do like woven leather bags, but like others, I don’t like plastic bags that won’t last and I don’t have the money for the original!

I had seen this one I’ve been debating getting for the summer: https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/woven-leather-handbag-eletra-tan/

A few years ago I almost bought the Bottega (the designer one on which this is based). But even there, the cost of that bag versus the material used, did not make sense.

Yes, I seem to remember reading (years ago) that the real cost of the Bottega one was in the labour hours and the skill involved in the handweaving. So not necessarily the material (althought I'm sure that's a factor as well).

I'm sure they also add a hefty mark up, though!

Not sure why my reply linking to a Cosmopolitan article about how the bag went viral last year has been hidden! Anyway, it apparently did, so not sure whoever called it dated is quite right :)

Something a year old is not “dated”. Do you replace your entire wardrobe every year?

Tonissister · 26/01/2026 10:08

No. Maybe I have mild OCD but that loose weave texture just makes me think of all the dirt and germs it will accumulate and how hard it would be to clean.

The sales assistant said it’s leather. It’s also got a suede mix.

It’s basically plastic!

It’s a lot of money for a plastic bag.

err no, because I’m not the one who said it was dated! I was saying precisely the opposite as it was a viral sensation (according to Cosmo) just a few months ago, hence it is NOT dated…

chattychatchatty · 26/01/2026 10:18

Our local TK Maxx. had a lot of Dune bags over Christmas, and they have regular sales where things are 50% off, so yes I like the bag but I think it’s way overpriced. Mind you I bought some Dune boots full price last autumn, also overpriced and since reduced but I liked them, wanted to wear them at that point in time and consider it money well spent. They were leather. I’m not a fan of synthetic, you might as well look in Primark IMO.

tinytinyviolin · 26/01/2026 10:19

It’s a really nice bag. I tried on a few in JL. I’d go for the dark brown XL if I got it. I don’t mind if it’s not leather.

I like the woven style bags. I have a very similar M&S bag that was about half that price, might be worth a look? There were lots of Bottega dupes around last year so plenty of that style about, even Primark had them.
If you like the Dune one though go for it. They tend be quite well made bags despite not being leather.

I think I’ll go back to the shop and try the bags on and the lighting will hopefully be better.

I quite like it to look at, but its not practical. The weave will get gungy and be difficult to clean. I prefer a lined bag, and I prefer a natural material, not necessarily leather, but not polyurethane.

Edit to add I really like the colours though, especially the pale metallic and the green one.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 26/01/2026 11:28

I certainly wouldn’t buy a synthetic bag for that price. I always find with the surface layer peeling off with synthetic bags and faux leather jackets so I avoid buying.

FreddysFingers · 26/01/2026 12:59

Ooooh, that's nice! It's my birthday soon, might pop that one on the list :)

somanychristmaslights · 26/01/2026 13:04

I like it but it looks really plasticky in the photos.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/01/2026 13:15

I don't wear suede or leather by choice ( or down/feather , silk or wool )
I wouldn't buy it personally because I think all the woven bits will look manky after a while .

My Bags-of-Choice tend to be Roka or Kipling so canvas not pleather .
If I did want a shiney bag then M&S do plenty at half the price

I was looking at the description, it definitely say synthetic so I would be mightily pissed off if I wanted a leather bag and was mis sold this one

Worth taking a look at them in a shop. The colours look much better in RL.

It IS dated, not because this particular bag has been in the shops for a year, but because the bag it’s attempting to dupe came out donkeys years ago.

That may not matter to some people of course.

Yes the bottega bags have been around for years in this style. I haven't seen that style or similar on anyone for a long time. Last time was maybe on a flight 8-10 yrs ago.

When I see a new item on several young hot things. I am immediately put off. Feels very much like product placement #gifted. Bottega andiamo is currently having a moment. This style is old.

RustyBear · 26/01/2026 17:59

I have that bag in black. (It was a present, so I don’t know how much it cost) I love it, it doesn’t look or feel plasticky in real life, and I’ve seen no signs of wear. It’s quite soft and very flexible, so it takes a lot of stuff. The weave isn’t “getting manky” inside or outside and though it’s unlined, it does have an inner semi-rigid base. It also has an extra clip-on pouch inside for smaller items. The integral handle is comfortable and long enough to go on my shoulder, even with a thick coat, and it also has a long clip-on handle so you can wear it messenger style. The only thing I’m not so keen on is the popper fastening, which can be quite stiff to close, but once it’s closed it doesn’t pop open like some do. All in all I’m very pleased with it.
