First day back at work although a (hopefully) slow one, wfh and praying that most of my contacts/customers will still be off!
Started off with Devotion, the classic lemony gourmand from D and G, but I will probably do some testing and mixing it up throughout the day especially as I have a number of new perfumes from christmas still to be properly explored.

Babylon by penhaligon's, although if you are on a budget Mesopotamia by perfume parlour is an excellent dupe. Comes in a wash/ lotion

I’m seeing my aged parent today and travelling on public transport so wanted something easy. The opposite of a ‘room rocker’ so am wearing JLo ‘Glow’. Clean, soapy and so cheap I pretty much wear it as a body spray.

I’m new to the perfume world and hoping someone can help me figure something out.

There’s a certain note I absolutely hate in perfumes, it instantly offends my nose and after a while gives me a headache/makes me nauseous.

So far I’ve noticed it in these perfumes:

  • glossier you doux (very strong)
  • Vyrao ludeaux (more hidden)
  • Le Labo Santal 33 (very strong)

I thought it might be tonka or sandalwood but I adore the Kilian Angels' Share which has both. Other loves have been Phlur Father Figure, Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Majahad and Penhaligon’s Luna, if that’s any help.

I’d like to expand my collection but don’t have easy access to stores so do my purchasing online. It would be helpful to know what the note is so that I can steer clear of any with it in.

MiaN · 02/01/2026 12:20

I can not give you specific note, but I suspect there is synthetic molecule used and not listed in each of them. They are so in right now, there are some houses that LOVE them like Perfumes De Marely for example as they allow for traditionally lighter, short lasting scents to last long but more sensitive noses find them annoying. As far as I know the notes sometimes are made up after the perfume formula is complete and not indicative of actual ingredients so sometimes what is in common won't be visible form the notes.

That's why I don't get a long with some vanillas for example, and those that smell like burned plastic are never from the 90's - all recent perfumes since the use of molecules/proprietary perfume notes exploded.

Ludeax have skin listed as note, and that is highly likely to be ambroxan, also present in you doux.

BakeOffRewatch · 02/01/2026 12:35

That’s so interesting thanks @MiaN. Same for BTSO, the Dirty Milk I have smells wonderful some days and some days the fake plastic smell dominates and I don’t like that - wonder if it’s temperature related and waiting for summer to see how it changes. And then will probably sell.

Thank you for the new thread @IDontHateRainbows .

SOTD Commodity Milk Orchid for me. Have the travel it came with in my handbag so when I forget to put on perfume it’s this one. I like it a lot.

CorneliaStreet · 02/01/2026 13:05

Thanks for the new thread. Tocca Florence for me today.

IDontHateRainbows · 02/01/2026 13:11

The burnt plastic thing is so weird, most of the time with matiere premiere vanilla powder i get a lovely warm vanilla scent.but just occasionally I get the plasticine effect. No rhyme or reason to it. I know Auerlien prides himself on using raw natural ingredients so there is natural vanilla in there im sure.. but is it all a marketing con anx he's added a load of ambroxan?

Could it be amber/ambroxan? It's often used as a base note in woody/musky perfumes like You Doux and Santal 33, and some people will perceive it more strongly than others.

Fleecy · 02/01/2026 13:21

Was it this thread where a couple of people mentioned Who is Elijah's Cherry fiesta? I noticed I had some from the Cult Beauty GWP - tried it today and I like it.

BakeOffRewatch · 02/01/2026 13:33

I had a look and in BORNTOSTANDOUT Dirty Milk the synthetics are cashmeran (wiki link) and akigalawood (Parfinity link) - unless you knew you wouldn’t know from the names that it’s synthetic. Akigalawood is meant to be patchouli - but I’d take Vyrao Witchy Woo over that any day! The Parfinity link says they made the molecule to be eco and sustainable - there is human rights abuses with flower picking for luxury perfume , the flowers have to be picked at a certain time for optimum fragrance so I can see why they’re doing it, I’m not totally against it https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-68172560.amp

Cult Beauty has two new BTSO Scent Discovery kits. £55 for 8x2ml, so £171.88 per 50ml. It’s £173 for an actual full bottle of the white bottle line so not outrageously up-priced like the Kayali sample sets. I’ll be trying different discount codes.

Can I join? I've found myself getting more interested in fragrances this year, although I only have a small collection at the moment. I got some perfume gifts for Christmas and thought I'd share with likeminded people!

From my sister, the Commodity discovery set - I've got a cold at the moment so only tested two of them so far. Milk personal was very gentle and easy to wear, Gold personal is my SOTD, but I'm not detecting the vanilla, it's more the amber coming through. Will revisit both when my nose is working again!

From my mum, the Saltworks discovery set - I don't know anything about this brand, so not really sure where to start. So far I've sampled Green Envy, which is described as oak moss and pepper, but it comes off a bit 'generic aftershave' to me.

From me - an unexpected find in a charity shop, the Zara X Olivia Giacobetti Livre Blanc. I'm so excited for this! She designed Philosykos which is one of my all time favourite scents, and this was a limited edition release that's now discontinued, so it feels like a lucky find to have snagged it in the charity shop. I love clean, warm fragrances and this smells like clean laundry drying on a radiator, or the smell of the dry cleaners - it's very comforting and approachable. I'm really keen to find a bottle of Vapeur Blanche, which is described as smelling like sauna steam, but as it's discontinued it's hard to find.

Actually I am not against them at all, but I think it is possible that those are heavier in perfumes where one person smells 🌹and the other person smells 💩. I think most ingredients in perfume are not natural anyway.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/01/2026 14:54

Anyone tried the new Dior Rosy Glow? I just got a sample and tried it, and I smell of cake! Not unpleasant, but not my aim really.

WFH and honestly can't be arsed to get into anything on this Friday, so I have been spritzing away - found my long last Ganymeded from Harrods AC, due to the stupidly wide opening ended up pouring half of it on my hand so I'll probably be smelling of this for a while but I really like it, saffron is one of my favourite notes and this is perfect for the cold weather.

also using up my Milk Personal from the cult beauty stocking. I had the Milk Bold last year and it gave me an awful headache every time I used it, I had to chuck it in the end, but luckily I am not getting that with Milk Personal and I do like a nice lactonic scent.

LetitSnowball · 02/01/2026 15:48

That is interesting, thank you @MiaN and @MotherWol

I think you could be on to something with the ambrox. I’ve checked some other perfumes I know I like and they’re free of it, whereas it’s present in all those I dislike.

The same scents smell different on my H, and he can’t pick up the “offensive” note on me either.

IDontHateRainbows · 02/01/2026 20:58

PDM Oriana this evening. This is a lovely scent. Can't quite decide if I prefer it to Delina Exclusiv. Very glad I got the PDM set in BF sale (although also not glad, another house to tempt me now!)

It's sweet but not sickly, from the scent profile you wouldn't think I would like it as much as I do, as it's quite citrussy but it has a lot of powdery, mallowy base to level it out. Maybe it's the ambrette that's doing it for me - the same thing that's in Mojave Ghost.

@IDontHateRainbows I love Oriana 😍 I've just been to disneyland paris and decided that this would be Minnie Mouse's perfume 🎀

I then went on to decide that Delina la rosee would be Daisy Duck's perfume 🩷 so I alternated between them both, but whenever I wore DLR, I would regret not wearing Oriana 🤣

I'm back home now and resting my worn out paws. SOTEvening is Merchant of Venice Queen of the Night, cosy and relaxing ☺️
