I want a scent that smells like baby powder... or something

I bought a second hand coat and it has THE most glorious scent on it.

Wearing it is like being snuggled up in a warm towel after a bath when I was three. Or maybe being hugged by some warm, glamorous mother figure (definitely not mine!) who sweeps in from a cocktail party, engulfs one in her fur stole and says "Hello darlings, did you have a lovely day?"

I can only think it must be similar to some common product of the 1970s... but I can't really say what, and I wouldn't know where to begin describing perfumes.

The scent seems to be all over the coat, so probably hasn't come from a personal perfume.

Um, with that hopelessly vague brief,Grin might any kind perfumista please have suggestions for something lovely and cosy so I and my wardrobe can smell like a glamorous snuggle!

Could it have been washed in the Spanish washing liquid/fabric softener Talco? Its a lovely baby powder scent. You can get it home bargains/the range now.

Hmm … The OP wants a smell that recaptures the 70s - so ‘clean’ wouldn’t be right. It should be soft but with an undertone of damp sheepskin and Fray Bentos pies, when the closest we got to Paris was the school day trip to Calais …

Ooh no, don't take me too literally!

As you say, the full smell of the 1970s involves some... interesting ingredients. For me coal fires are in there, and clothes drying in the kitchen and some funky damp in the bedrooms!

And I am in no way sophisticated in my detection of fragrances.Smile

I'm going to really enjoy having a sniff of so many of these fab suggestions – and it may turn out to be related to some completely different memory from a different era which has somehow got melded with bath time! Like when you say, "Oh who's that actor, name's on the tip of my tongue, begins with W.... Oh yes: Betty!"Blush

BDK Velvet tonka would meet your criteria. Very almondy/ vanilla

TressiliansStone · 08/12/2025 22:19

I am in awe of the discerning noses on here, which can pick out this and that subtle ingredient and analyse likely emotional connections.

Thank you!

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 08/12/2025 23:25

Hi OP, is it a possibility to ask the seller of the coat what the fragrance might be?

An excellent idea, but sadly I have already tried and failed with this.

The other possibility is that the fragrance could actually be detergent.

Ecover liquid has a very comforting smell, but using it ib our machine with hard water, it doesn’t smell the same as when we use it in a much softer water.

Stergene has a very powdery, soapy smell also.

dandeliondandy · 09/12/2025 00:05

Try Je Reviens. That has a v powdery smell and is vintage. Not so expensive now. Alternatively, try Shalimar as others have said. Scent is so mostalgic x

dandeliondandy · 09/12/2025 00:08

L'aimant by Coty is another powdery vintage scent and not expensive now. Think you can get a tester in Boots x

Oh my , totally forgot about this ! Loved it , used to wear the perfume and the body lotion

Screamingabdabz · 09/12/2025 00:16

Parfums de Marly Delina is the perfume you’re seeking op. Sophisticated baby powder.

CosyRoby · 09/12/2025 00:17

I was going to say one of the Harujuku perfumes was exactly like baby powder … little bottles all like little dolls ,Think it was called Baby
( Gwen Stefani range from years ago)

Ah OK. That’s frustrating. There are so many experts on this thread, and also the perfumistas one, there will be someone out there that will be able to tell straight away what it is with one sniff. I hope you find it. X

StupidHappyClocks · 09/12/2025 00:22

If it’s a vintage powdery smell, lots of the classic Guerlain fragrances have that base - Apres L’Ondee, L’Heure Bleu, L’Instant Magic, Insolence spring to mind.

Teint de Neige is a good shout for a serious baby powder…on steroids. Junoon by Al Haramain and Powder Flowers by Montale are in the same vein.

Elizabeth Arden True Love is a good cheapie in that fragrance family, although not pure baby powder.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/12/2025 00:39

I'm thinking, Love's Baby Soft (if I remember correctly).

I think Shalimar smells like this.

I came on to say the same

Branleuse · 09/12/2025 02:15

Ombre rose by brossard?
Its a proper old lady talc smell. Very nostalgic

I loved Maybe Baby. And the tin of pressed powder with a fabric sponge thing for my legs.

I want to find a match although I wonder if the nostalgia might be too much.

Bathina! Why was it ever discontinued? It was lovely.

begone25 · 09/12/2025 04:58

Is it a washable coat? If so, I’m wondering if it could be a fragranced laundry conditioner?

Worknightmareagain · 09/12/2025 05:15

Try poudre by Narciso Rodriguez, my current favourite perfume

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/12/2025 05:20

evilharpy · 08/12/2025 14:58

Have a sniff of Ghost and see if that fits the bill. It's not baby powdery, more like a slightly rose-scented talc I think.

Seconded. Powdery and a bit of vanilla.

CurlewKate · 09/12/2025 05:39

You can buy a cologne in Spain that they use to help keep babies cool in the heat-it smells amazing!
