Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

As a few pps said, Bonnie Blue has this 'look!' Wouldn't want to look anything like her! Shock

I did laugh when I googled her, because her wiki page came up, and it says she's an 'actress!' 😂

Like boiled bacon.

dermaplaning, too much Botox.
it looks dreadful.

I was going to say dermaplaning. I won an ‘ultra facial’ in a raffle last year. I thought it would be a nice relaxing treatment, but it turned out to be dermaplaning and microneedling. I gave it a go, but I didn’t like how my face looked or felt afterwards. The hairless idea is a bit weird to me. Odd that it’s supposed to be a natural look - we’re peaches not nectarines!

CrostaDiPizza · 12/10/2025 13:44

She looks like she's been in the sun too long and slathered ointment on the sunburn. The gob half-open is horrible.

Glass skin is what you’re seeing and it basically isn’t achievable for anyone over 29 imo, and not for quite a few under 29 either.

I am no expert but would imagine it requires quite a lot of exfoliation eg glycolic acid. And then lots of moisturiser. And then something glowy like the Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter.

Yes this, plus with the premature use of Botox and fillers creating an unnaturally tight and smooth canvas

Another MN low! Don’t menopausal women have enough to deal without judgement from other women?

Reality ffs

RightOnTheEdge · 12/10/2025 13:57

I saw a video of a woman around the same ages as me (late 40s) doing her make up the other day so I watched for some tips.

He face looked like those pictures that pps have posted and she was saying "Look how lovely and glowing my skin is!" But she just looked sweaty to me.

buffybots · 12/10/2025 13:57

Tretinoin does it to my skin but I’m never giving that up!

Annettefromthenewsagents · 12/10/2025 13:57

Looks weird, like a greasy onion.

It’s just a trend like anything else. There was a time when ‘shine’ of any kind was derided and we were all meant to be constantly blotting, mattifying, powdering and so on so the surface of the skin basically looked as matte as a sheet of printer paper.

Now it’s the other way round. This too shall pass.

See also ‘Why do people have thick eyebrows now?’, ‘Why do people suddenly want big bums?’, ‘Why does everyone get wavy blowdries instead of ironing hair poker-straight?’ etc etc. There’s no ‘explanation’ other than ‘because fashions change’.

'Does my bum look big in this?'

Guess I'm behind the times 😂

As for the shiny complexion you'd have to be really careful of this in summer, or quite frequently even in the shoulder seasons. Getting your face burnt to a crisp isn't conducive to a great aging process either. Moisturizer with SPF 50 all the way for me!

So I love Tatcha Dewy skin cream & that gives a nice dewy but not glassy effect. I did, however mix it with my Bondi Sands Glo Facebronzer today and my husband said I look weird and shiny so that’s definitely a step too far.

I agree the wet look is weird but do think older skin looks better well hydrated and moisturised.

100% agree on the Tatcha cream. I am not big on skincare (as someone with combination skin, large pores and rosacea very little out there helps me). I had the Tatcha dewy cream as a sample and the effect was incredible - I looked 10 years younger, like I'd had the best night's sleep of my life, healthy without slimyness, it didn't clog my pores or upset my rosacea. I am saving up to buy the full size

GreyCarpet · 12/10/2025 14:00

One of my colleagues currently sports this look. She asked me what I thought of it - which I felt was quite unfair because I'm 51 😁

I told her she looked very 'dewy'. She seemed pleased enough with this but also said that she was worried it looked too shiny but didn't care as 'it' (whatever 'it' was) hadn't been expensive and was going to use it all.

In truth, I think she looks a bit sweaty.

housethatbuiltme · 12/10/2025 14:04

'Glass face' as it seems to be called seems to be everywhere on SM now... In my day and age we did everything we could to NOT look greasy (mattifying everything) but apparently greasy is the cool fashion now a day.

Don't tell me folks are out here trying to drive up the price of vaseline now. We've been using it on our skin and hair for as long as I've been alive and I don't want to start paying ridiculous money for it now 🤦🏾‍♀️.

I was just thinking the same!

Prestonpope · 12/10/2025 14:06

I think if done well, it can look pretty good. And I’m rather envious!
As someone who is naturally prone to facial sweating, with rosy cheeks, I always use powder to blot my makeup and cover up - I’m old school! I hate my face feeling ‘wet’.

Whereas my teens don’t ever use it. It’s not in their regime.

CunningLinguist2 · 12/10/2025 14:07

It’s “glass skin” and Reedle products from eg Oliva Young (very very reasonably priced) are great for achieving it (54 y o here).
i’ve sensitive rosacea skin & the Reedle shots products on my skin before my normal usual
products do this.
The Dr Jart+ overnight gel (applied generously) is ace as well - and really soothes my skin.

Bonnie Blue looks like a doll in that photo, like AI. Looks very unrealistic.

I agree.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/10/2025 14:18

My shiny raw looking face is achieved by drinking wine, eating spicy food, outdoor exercise, sitting in the sun, or simply random menopausal flushes which cause my make up to slide off my skin. If you wish to swap skin conditions then you’re welcome.

Noshadelamp · 12/10/2025 14:18

Anything looking "scrubbed raw" is either due to strong acids or lots of liquid blush.

Glass skin doesn't look raw, just clear, smooth and glassy.

I think matte "blurred" skin texture is taking over from glass skin anyway.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 12/10/2025 14:23

WhiteRoseHurt · 12/10/2025 11:36

Since having Botox my face is much shinier. Perhaps it’s that?

This makes sense. Botox freezes the muscles in the face, which then makes the skin taut and shiny-looking.

UnctuousUnicorns · 12/10/2025 14:24

Catpiece · 12/10/2025 11:33

I must be in fashion then as I have greasy skin that needs constant blotting with face powder 🤷‍♀️

Yep, that was me premenopause. Total greaseball, constantly wiping my face with a tissue. If only I'd known that I was thirty years ahead of my time! 😅

Freddiefan · 12/10/2025 14:25

I see someone has already mentioned Shirley Ballas. I saw her last night and wondered what was the matter with her. It was not a good look!

Bloozie · 12/10/2025 12:24

I love the proper 'glass skin' look - when it is a quality of your skin - and it is what I aspire to, but the people out there with layers of serum and vaseline sliding off their faces look a bit odd to me.

But if they're happy, I'm happy. Whatever.

My skin has a bit of a nice glow about it but no one is going to mistake me for a Korean influencer. And the wrinkles... I can't do much about those, I should have locked myself in a darkened room without smiling for the last 46 years. That ship has sailed.

I use a vitamin c serum, layer of hyaluronic acid and then a collagen day cream during the day, and a retinal serum, layer of HLA, and a peptide cream at night. I take a collagen supplement and drink at least 2 litres of water a day. The rest is up to the gods.

What products do you use @Bloozie ?

I also had to google her. On the results page it said 'people also search for [...] Elsan blue'

Seemed logical somehow.
