Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

I have read Hayley Bieber is a pioneer of this and sells her products to apparently achieve ‘glass skin’. I thought it was youth and very expensive treatments, Botox etc.

Rosscameasdoody · 12/10/2025 12:02

If anyone is using Vaseline to achieve this look, they should be aware that it promotes hair health. And before I’m challenged, I know it doesn’t directly promote growth but it creates an environment in which hair can look thicker, so anywhere where there are fine hairs - face, arms etc, will end up looking hairier.

has anyone seen that related episode of Emily in Paris? It's hilarious, but it's also accurate.

Funnily enough, I was given a free sample of something called Uber Lube this week. Apparently suitable for hair, facial skin, preventing chafing while you're jogging or whatever, and the other thing.

I resisted the urge to tell the provider that it reminded me of the TV show! Happily I got some useful free samples too 😂

It’s Botox. All the 20 and 30 year old’s at my work have it done.

Is that the look Corrie's Abbi is sporting?
Looks like an overdose of moisturiser not rubbed in.

Good old Abi. Glass skin, beloved by motor mechanics everywhere.

I hate the greasy shiny skin look! To me it looks so unhealthy. Skin is meant to be soft, not tight & shiny looking. I find it quite repellent.

It’s Botox

It's Korean skincare but yes, Botox makes foreheads shinier.

for those asking for pics: first pic is what I imagine this is what they are aiming for with the whole glass skin / clean girl makeup trend (was originally a Korean beauty trend) second image is the reality which is a bit overkill irl (and I don’t even think this is too ‘bad’ an example!!)

That's insane, I have naturally quite shiny skin (it's improved with age but still there a bit) and use powder to try and improve it. Amazed anyone is aspiring to it, I view it as akin to redness.

Yes,makes me laugh every time whee on screen, a long with lip filler and Botox and perfect nails 🤣

DinaofCloud9 · 12/10/2025 12:10

It reminds me of Bonnie Blue.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 12/10/2025 12:11

I had my eyebrows microbladed six months ago and had to Vaseline them a few times a day. My skin looked shiny and lots of people said it looked nice and my family asked if I had also had Botox. I hadn’t!
I must have been trendy and not realised.

LakeFlyPie · 12/10/2025 12:12

Reminds me of a description of David Cameron I read somewhere (probably MN!) likening him to a 'freshly wanked cock' -so accurate 😂

KatharinaRosalie · 12/10/2025 12:13

I strive to have skin like that, it's quite glassy now, but of course I still have pores and stuff. It is acheved by Korean skincare - exfoliation yes as well, but mostly tons of moisture, I use several toners, ampoules, serums and creams all on top of each other. I'm in my late 40s so much prefer the plump slightly shiny skin to my previous parched wrinkly one.

WhiteRoseHurt · 12/10/2025 12:14

Why all the judgement over Botox? I have it and it makes me feel better about myself.

UseOfWeapons · 12/10/2025 12:14

IME, it’s Botox. Can spot it a long way off, add a chemical peel, and it does resemble Vaseline face!

AliceMaforethought · 12/10/2025 12:15

It looks awful even on the young and beautiful models who promote it. On a menopause age woman it would look utterly ludicrous.

Crinkle77 · 12/10/2025 12:16

Yep botox. A lot of celebs on telly seem to look shiny these days.

Another MN low! Don’t menopausal women have enough to deal without judgement from other women?

KimHwn · 12/10/2025 12:17

I do slugging with Vaseline overnight every few weeks, it makes my skin a lot softer, but I wouldn't dream of going out with it on. It literally makes me look like a slug! Glad I'm old.

Dweetfidilove · 12/10/2025 12:20

Don't tell me folks are out here trying to drive up the price of vaseline now. We've been using it on our skin and hair for as long as I've been alive and I don't want to start paying ridiculous money for it now 🤦🏾‍♀️.

PuppyMonkey · 12/10/2025 12:21

Thanks for the pics, couldn’t quite think of what to put in Google myself. Not a huge fan tbc, makes me want to get my Number 7 translucent powder out and dab it on those foreheads. Grin

backatchababy · 12/10/2025 12:22

So I love Tatcha Dewy skin cream & that gives a nice dewy but not glassy effect. I did, however mix it with my Bondi Sands Glo Facebronzer today and my husband said I look weird and shiny so that’s definitely a step too far.

I agree the wet look is weird but do think older skin looks better well hydrated and moisturised.

Moonlightdust · 12/10/2025 12:22

No it’s not Botox, I know what the OP means (although I no longer consider myself a young thing!) It’s what’s known as the glass look. I think Meghan was trying to achieve this look at Paris fashion week. Personally I think it looks like your face has been slathered in Vaseline!

Bloozie · 12/10/2025 12:24

I love the proper 'glass skin' look - when it is a quality of your skin - and it is what I aspire to, but the people out there with layers of serum and vaseline sliding off their faces look a bit odd to me.

But if they're happy, I'm happy. Whatever.

My skin has a bit of a nice glow about it but no one is going to mistake me for a Korean influencer. And the wrinkles... I can't do much about those, I should have locked myself in a darkened room without smiling for the last 46 years. That ship has sailed.

I use a vitamin c serum, layer of hyaluronic acid and then a collagen day cream during the day, and a retinal serum, layer of HLA, and a peptide cream at night. I take a collagen supplement and drink at least 2 litres of water a day. The rest is up to the gods.
