Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

You haven't left much to the gods, have you? 😂Just teasing, not having a go. Your skin regimen is more complex than mine. I'm glad you get a result which you love!

Ha! This is a very good point. About 2 years ago my skin looked awful, especially around my eyes, because I just wasn't looking after any part of my self. I've introduced things iteratively - the collagen capsules came first - and so it doesn't feel like a lot to me, but yeah. It's a lot.

And now I can see that it's worked I can't stop.

It is the combination of botox (which gives that classic, shiny forehead), overuse of tretinoin and the Korean "glass skin" trend. Like Eilidh in the attached photo who is a skincare influencer. It sort of looks ok on social media but I agree there are a lot of young people walking around looking like they have a layer of vaseline on their face.

Having battled oily skin since my teens I'm delighted that my greasy face suddenly looks intentional! 🤣

Edited

Yeah I look at that photo and think she’s forgotten to put her powder on 😂

WildCherryBlossom · 12/10/2025 11:33

Yup. One of mine aspires to Korean “glass” skin and slathers on Vaseline in an attempt to create something that is impossible on various levels (filters / AI / genetics etc)

If I did this I'd be covered in spots!

Bambamhoohoo · 12/10/2025 12:58

I agree glass skin looks amazing. I don’t know how it aligns to rubbed raw skin as it doesn’t look red and raw?

SpottedDeer · 12/10/2025 13:01

NotsosunnyShropshire · 12/10/2025 11:45

It’s a Korean beauty thing. Glass skin. No pores, blemishes, dark circles or facial hair.

I'd love that!

Oriunda · 12/10/2025 13:02

I don’t aim for glass skin per se, but I use minimal makeup (no foundation) and absolutely love Nuxe l’huile prodigeuse in the pink colour. A tiny bit on my cheekbones or added to moisturiser gives me a dewy glow.

BauhausOfEliott · 12/10/2025 12:41

It’s just a trend like anything else. There was a time when ‘shine’ of any kind was derided and we were all meant to be constantly blotting, mattifying, powdering and so on so the surface of the skin basically looked as matte as a sheet of printer paper.

Now it’s the other way round. This too shall pass.

See also ‘Why do people have thick eyebrows now?’, ‘Why do people suddenly want big bums?’, ‘Why does everyone get wavy blowdries instead of ironing hair poker-straight?’ etc etc. There’s no ‘explanation’ other than ‘because fashions change’.

I used to love the tiny blotting paper books Bodyshop did (and bring back the passionfruit cleanser, so many posters have asked for this over the years!)

The kids at school use the little tins of Vaseline on their lips/cheeks. I use the pink tin on myself. I quite like the slightly dewy/hectic/feverish look!

I’m finding I need much more moisturiser as I age, Vaseline probably isn’t the answer, especially as last time I bought some was for my husband’s bike!

ElleintheWoods · 12/10/2025 13:03

There's many products and procedures now to achieve glass skin.

If you have a combo of Botox, certain other in-clinic procedures, a specific skincare routine that certain brand offer, and also certain types of makeup and primers/ top layers, that will give you the full effect.

I'm near 40 now and don't think glass skin is a good look, it looks too obviously fake. However, I use SPF which makes my skin glow vaseline-style as a side effect, and a specific BB cream on top, and sometimes I get 'wow you have almost glass skin' comments - not sure how I feel about that!

Catpiece · 12/10/2025 11:33

I must be in fashion then as I have greasy skin that needs constant blotting with face powder 🤷‍♀️

Yup, I've spent my whole life trying to avoid the oil slick look!

for those asking for pics: first pic is what I imagine this is what they are aiming for with the whole glass skin / clean girl makeup trend (was originally a Korean beauty trend) second image is the reality which is a bit overkill irl (and I don’t even think this is too ‘bad’ an example!!)

The Korean woman looks gorgeous, but the other woman looks ridiculous. I don't like The Glass Skin look at all (on most people.) Abi from Corrie looks ludicrous with her super shiny skin, her ridiculous lips, her perfectly manicured nails, and the big white veneers on her teeth.

As has been said, she is an ex drug addict, and a mechanic! She wouldn't look like this in real life.

30 years ago she would not have been hired for Corrie with all the procedures she has done to her face (and if she was already there and had it done, they would have 'let her go...')

I’ve just returned from a holiday in Europe, where we were staying there were all kinds of nationalities.

then a group of brits turned up. Stupidly large black lashes, brows you could land a plane on, pumped up lips and immobile foreheads

go to ANY European city you don’t see this level of of cosmetic deformity, ditto NYC or California

the female fashion for makeup and cosmetic procedures is out of control!

Yes it’s always British women in their own little bubble of stupidity whilst the clever sophisticated Europeans Americans Australians Chinese Egyptians etc are soooooo more smarter then them and never follow fashion trends on tik tok badly.

there is nothing I love more than being in a sophisticated hotel abroad and then a gaggle of ugly poor cluelsss British women come in and I can have a huge laugh at how dumb they are. It gives me life, it does. Even better if I can get the skinny beautiful Europeans to point and laugh with me so they know I’m not one of them.

dudsville · 12/10/2025 13:19

I do it at night, but not full on in the day for fear that my hair would get caught in it. Like the gloss lipsticks of about 20 years ago! It's great for my mid 50s skin.

WhamBamThanksJan · 12/10/2025 13:19

I saw a YouTube add and one of them was talking about how to get shiny hair and at the end her face was just as shiny.

It’s odd but trends come and go.

Happyher · 12/10/2025 13:21

Looking at the photos they all look like they’re having a hot flush. They’ll get that look for free when they get a bit older

Cherrysoup · 12/10/2025 13:25

Omg, just googled glass skin and it just looks like they’re quite sweaty! 🤣😅

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 12/10/2025 13:26

Shirley Ballas was sporting the look on Strictly last night.

As were two contestants who were dressed and made up as thunderbird puppets 🤣

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 12/10/2025 13:30

As a few pps said, Bonnie Blue has this 'look!' Wouldn't want to look anything like her! Shock

I did laugh when I googled her, because her wiki page came up, and it says she's an 'actress!' 😂

Reminds me of a description of David Cameron I read somewhere (probably MN!) likening him to a 'freshly wanked cock' -so accurate 😂

Oh thank you so much for make me laugh hard at this. 😁

She's a pretty woman who would look even prettier without that shiny skin. It looks very red, as well.

You didn't meet any Belgians then.

Big bums are in fashion because loads of people are fat and it's less effort to wobble that fat bum about a bit than go on a diet.

3luckystars · 12/10/2025 13:39

Bonnie Blue looks like a doll in that photo, like AI. Looks very unrealistic.

I saw someone at a train station whose face literally looked slick with a thick layer of Vaseline. Like she’d been set in aspic.

Eeew!
