Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

I have no idea - I was going to hazard a guess it might be the sort of fast exfoliation caused by prescription acne treatments like the one I used as a teenager. Tretinoin accelerates the loss of skin cells in order to prevent pores from clogging. It does give a shiny look.

Moonlightdust · 12/10/2025 12:25

I inadvertently achieved this look vacuuming the whole house and cleaning the bathrooms today 😂

I love the proper 'glass skin' look - when it is a quality of your skin - and it is what I aspire to, but the people out there with layers of serum and vaseline sliding off their faces look a bit odd to me.

But if they're happy, I'm happy. Whatever.

My skin has a bit of a nice glow about it but no one is going to mistake me for a Korean influencer. And the wrinkles... I can't do much about those, I should have locked myself in a darkened room without smiling for the last 46 years. That ship has sailed.

I use a vitamin c serum, layer of hyaluronic acid and then a collagen day cream during the day, and a retinal serum, layer of HLA, and a peptide cream at night. I take a collagen supplement and drink at least 2 litres of water a day. The rest is up to the gods.

You haven't left much to the gods, have you? 😂Just teasing, not having a go. Your skin regimen is more complex than mine. I'm glad you get a result which you love!

Bonnie Blue has this look but I assumed it was the amount of £&#@ she gets on her face all the time 🤢🤮

I just think anyone who does this looks like a sweaty mess!

Agree, I’m in my 60s and have no idea what it is, nor have I ever seen it on my younger family members. I do remember many years ago using a body scrub on my face (I know, I know!) and ending up with a face like a slapped arse! Thank goodness I did on a Friday evening and didn’t have work the next day.

Reminds me of a description of David Cameron I read somewhere (probably MN!) likening him to a 'freshly wanked cock' -so accurate 😂

Don't tell me folks are out here trying to drive up the price of vaseline now. We've been using it on our skin and hair for as long as I've been alive and I don't want to start paying ridiculous money for it now 🤦🏾‍♀️.

My mum always used vaseline on her face didn't have any wrinkles even in her 80s.

MzHz · 12/10/2025 12:36

I’ve just returned from a holiday in Europe, where we were staying there were all kinds of nationalities.

then a group of brits turned up. Stupidly large black lashes, brows you could land a plane on, pumped up lips and immobile foreheads

go to ANY European city you don’t see this level of of cosmetic deformity, ditto NYC or California

the female fashion for makeup and cosmetic procedures is out of control!

BauhausOfEliott · 12/10/2025 12:41

It’s just a trend like anything else. There was a time when ‘shine’ of any kind was derided and we were all meant to be constantly blotting, mattifying, powdering and so on so the surface of the skin basically looked as matte as a sheet of printer paper.

Now it’s the other way round. This too shall pass.

See also ‘Why do people have thick eyebrows now?’, ‘Why do people suddenly want big bums?’, ‘Why does everyone get wavy blowdries instead of ironing hair poker-straight?’ etc etc. There’s no ‘explanation’ other than ‘because fashions change’.

Ieeeps · 12/10/2025 12:41

botox, or any procedure that tightens the skin, I’ve had a facelift of sorts and in that area I have the shininess.
none surgical, lots of Korean moisturisers and other skin products

Catpiece · 12/10/2025 11:33

I must be in fashion then as I have greasy skin that needs constant blotting with face powder 🤷‍♀️

If your skin looks that oily, then you will likely age well, as sebum contains vitamin e I believe, and people's skin tend to get drier as they get older.

I'm surprised that didn't cause acne.

Another MN low! Don’t menopausal women have enough to deal without judgement from other women?

If they make themselves look ridiculous they're going to get judgement from everyone. It's how the world works.

Crossaintqueen · 12/10/2025 12:44

It's tretinoin.

I can practically smell her through the screen. Absolutely rank and disgusting.

Blueuggboots · 12/10/2025 12:46

dermaplaning, too much Botox.
it looks dreadful.

Yes, it’s great and I’ve been using it for a lifetime…from waterproofing my baby’s bottom (never had nappy rash) and using Vaseline or baby oil to seal in moisture in my skin.
It’s inexpensive and preventative rather than restorative. Great product!

Cornflakes44 · 12/10/2025 12:48

Just googled it. It looks very sweaty to me and not at all attractive. Each to their own though.

ILoveLukeAlderton · 12/10/2025 12:48

I tried the Charlotte Tilbury glowy foundation because I thought it might make me look young and fresh but I just looked like I do when I've been to the gym 😩

KeepTalkingBeth · 12/10/2025 11:51

I find the glass skin look really odd. It makes people look sweaty and unwell IMHO. The people sporting it are usually beautiful, probably blessed with lovely skin anyway. A strange thing to do to your face.

I agree - they look sweaty.

GameOfJones · 12/10/2025 12:49

It is the combination of botox (which gives that classic, shiny forehead), overuse of tretinoin and the Korean "glass skin" trend. Like Eilidh in the attached photo who is a skincare influencer. It sort of looks ok on social media but I agree there are a lot of young people walking around looking like they have a layer of vaseline on their face.

Having battled oily skin since my teens I'm delighted that my greasy face suddenly looks intentional! 🤣

IDontHateRainbows · 12/10/2025 12:49

Acid 'paint stripper' toner I'd imagine plays a part

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 12/10/2025 12:50

I’m old enough to remember when this loo would have been the worst thing ever. We used to carry little tins of face blotting paper and try all the different powders in an attempt to get the best matte look. Funny how now everyone wants the opposite.
