Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

Trinny Woodall is guilty of this and it’s a revolting look. I had to block her Trinny London adverts on Facebook because her awful red shiny face gave me the creeps. It looks like someone’s been at her with the cheese grater or she’s recovering from a chemical peel gone wrong. If my skin looked like that I’d be seeing a dermatologist, not taking selfies or posting videos.

Wow. This is why I frequent Mumsnet. I learn so much!

cramptramp · 12/10/2025 14:40

It’s glass skin and looks sweaty and greasy. It’s horrible.

Shirley Ballas was sporting the look on Strictly last night.

As were two contestants who were dressed and made up as thunderbird puppets 🤣

I looked at Shirley the other evening and was genuinely thinking "Poor Shirley, she's still having hot flushes, must be the heat of the studio lights" and thought someone would rush on behind the scenes and towel her down. Didn't realise it was intentional.

Ha! This is a very good point. About 2 years ago my skin looked awful, especially around my eyes, because I just wasn't looking after any part of my self. I've introduced things iteratively - the collagen capsules came first - and so it doesn't feel like a lot to me, but yeah. It's a lot.

And now I can see that it's worked I can't stop.

Would you mind sharing what collagen capsules and tret you use? 🙏

PumpkinSeasonOctober · 12/10/2025 14:45

Lots of Botox.

Somebody post a pic please.

Look up the influencer Emily Kiser. Her skin looks like it's been sprayed with a layer of oil or varnish.

Reminds me of a description of David Cameron I read somewhere (probably MN!) likening him to a 'freshly wanked cock' -so accurate 😂

You DID read this on mn.

I remember having to read it to DH because I was laughing so much and he wanted to know why

I saw this too on Dragons Den and she is actually a lovely looking woman and I don’t know why she is doing this to her skin.
it was very unnatural looking compared to
the other Dragons.

I hate the greasy shiny skin look! To me it looks so unhealthy. Skin is meant to be soft, not tight & shiny looking. I find it quite repellent.

I agree, looks as though the skin would be clammy to the touch.

Oh, I hadn’t caught that she was on that, I just remember it from her FB posts.
At first I thought she had a skin condition but then I realised she owns a skincare and make up company and surely would have something to hide it were that the case!

I remember a girl at my school had very similar looking skin and it was some kind of skin condition. Always looked raw and weepy and painful. Why on earth anyone would intentionally look like that is beyond me.

justasking111 · 12/10/2025 15:00

French fashion week Meghan had the look which included her hair. All I could think of was the state my pillow cases would be in 😂

BreakingBroken · 12/10/2025 15:02

Korean beauty glass skin.
Lots of interest but doubt it’s achievable for most.
Better than snail eyebrows though
(even if the skin care has snail mucin)

I also had to google her. On the results page it said 'people also search for [...] Elsan blue'

Seemed logical somehow.

If you have never heard of Bonnie Blue, I envy you.! 😆

CrostaDiPizza · 12/10/2025 15:04

She was. Now she has a face full of fillers.

Yes it looks like someone with raw eczema that's shiny because it's been covered with a thick layer of emollient cream. It's baffling why anyone would voluntarily emulate such a look.

To be fair, the original glass skin trend from Asia doesn't involve the same aesthetic at all. It's more of a sparkly, glittery, dewy look that emulates social media filters and manga illustration styles. Asia also has very different beauty ideals and the shininess is only used on specific areas in combination with blush and contouring.

The trend got warped by the lip filler and botoxed forehead brigade. Having an all-over shiny face with no makeup, giant lips and greasy slicked-back hair really isn't flattering in the least.

TheFoodLife · 12/10/2025 15:13

It’s a hobby, spiralled into OCD / skin blindness. Starts out as an interest in skincare, but then loses perspective. I hope they enjoy it. You just know in a decade there’s going to be tons of “what were we thinking” posts. It’ll seem as funny as big 80’s hair.

My cousin had skin that looked almost transparent...this is going back many years before these products were around. Hers wasnt shiny but was amazing. I think they called it porcelain skin. I also knew a vegan who had similar skin. But it was entirely natural.

How would any of us even know what that would look like?

Edited

That's made me laugh even more than the original comment 🤣 😂

GreyBeeplus3 · 12/10/2025 15:36

Same here! But was told as a teenager that it would mean I'd be more likely to have fewer wrinkles when older; not too sure about that one now though......

FunMustard · 12/10/2025 15:38

I love the way 'glass skin' looks in adverts and the like.

Real life? No thanks. I look greasy.

I think it's not too bad on young, flawless skin - but older, it doesn't look like well-nourished healthy skin at all. It looks greasy.

Dweetfidilove · 12/10/2025 15:45

Iloveeverycat · 12/10/2025 12:33

My mum always used vaseline on her face didn't have any wrinkles even in her 80s.

And I wanna be just like her when I grow up so need vaseline to remain affordable ☺️

Dweetfidilove · 12/10/2025 15:46

KittyRannaldini · 12/10/2025 14:05

I was just thinking the same!

First the butters and the oils, now the vaseline 😅.

CantBreathe90 · 12/10/2025 15:56

So funny!

I'm apparently so old and past it, I've never heard of it or seen it!

ItstheHRTpat · 12/10/2025 15:56

It's a shame because the Korean version of it is lovely! But I agree the Western version of it looks awful!
