Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

Another MN low! Don’t menopausal women have enough to deal without judgement from other women?

Quite.

MyTeaParty · 13/10/2025 22:28

What ever they're using, I think you're better off sticking to the natural look.

Depends where you go - good places will do it for you £150 upwards for one area (ball park as it can really vary) but beauticians now do it who aren’t trained in the nerves of the face and it’s a lot cheaper e.g £99 for one area. Plus, teens live at home and probably have a little job on the side eg uni students who work in the summer etc.

if anyone is considering botox only go to people who are medically trained! My botox has been done by a bowel surgeon at St Thomas’ (!), an anaesthetist and a dentist. All brilliant results.

Oh wow. Yeah, that's way out of my league in terms of what I'd be willing to pay for something temporary. If people are getting these injections every few months for the rest of their lives I wonder what it's doing to their liver trying to filter it out. I wonder how much it would cost at somewhere like Spire to have whatever muscles are being injected removed (at least partially)

It’s derma planning… I had a gift voucher for a facial and the first time I’d had it done after she said can I try it on you, I’m easy going so said yes and came away all shiny…. Basically shaving every tiny hair off your face!!! Not sure I’d be up for having it done again 🤣

You can do this yourself (best not using a scalpel, but with a regular shaving razor).

Reminds me of a description of David Cameron I read somewhere (probably MN!) likening him to a 'freshly wanked cock' -so accurate 😂

Of god now you've said this is can't think of this look as anything else 😂

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 13/10/2025 23:13

The above message made me splutter - so far the best description for David Cameron is a gammon but the freshly wanked cock has surpassed it! Really wonderful 😂

I'm Irish skinned, incredibly pale (my foundation was designed for people with albinism but all the other ones like porcelain and fine have way too much or a yellow or pink base) people always said I looked 'deathly ill' as a child as I have no real 'undertone' except the blue of my veins.

In the shower I often turn completely see through though like my skin is clingfilm and you can see all the details of every vein and tendon in my arms and chest etc... its really freaky and strange. Then I get out and dry up/cool off and go back too looking like milk.

I don't find the glass skin trend looks like that though, they just look greasy/sweaty too me not see through.

Edited

Yes i think my cousins skin is similar to what you describe but s bit more pinkish but with exactly the translucent quality you describe. It was totally natural and looked incredible. So did the vegan woman's.

I use a scalpel BlushGrin gives really good results. For shaping my eyebrows too

Exactly. It's not 'glass' skin, it's slimy skin.
Absolutely revolting to look at, and fortunately it'll be well off trend very soon- leaving its fans with a lot of embarrassingly cringe/nausea inducing selfies forever captured on SM 😂

Totally false.and as bad as Botox IMHO !

If you had the muscles removed I suspect your whole face would completely sag because even when paralysed with Botox the muscles are still providing some support to the facial structure. One compromise of Botox is wrinkle reduction to the lower forehead vs risk of sagging in the eyelid area so no, I don’t think anyone would agree to remove your facial muscles 🤣

Alipuss · 14/10/2025 08:18

It is expensive and you have to get it done every couple of months I think. Not sure how they are affording it, I wonder that myself!

redluckycat · 14/10/2025 08:27

Endorewitch · 13/10/2025 20:33

Simple answer. Botox!!Too much botox gives your face a tight shiny look. You may have noticed you only see shiny faces which dont have any wrinkles.
I notice in the Soaps that a character is written out for a while and comes back with a taunt shiny wrinkle free face. Botox and possibly face lift.
Eg. Chaz in Emmerdale .

I have no forehead wrinkles in my mid 40s and have always had a naturally shiny forehead - I’ve never had Botox in my life!

LillyPJ · 14/10/2025 08:28

Why would anyone want to look like a robot?

ThisMellowCat · 14/10/2025 09:55

They are buying facial oil which is meant to boost skin, I put it on after taking makeup off but wouldn’t go out with it on alone. I imagine they are scrubbing and then putting this on.

henlake7 · 14/10/2025 11:37

I feel like as a look you would have to be very young, with flawless skin to start with.
Older ladies would look fake ('had work done' rarely seems to be a good look!) or if you are younger with less then perfect skin you will just look greasey.

minipie · 14/10/2025 12:04

I hadn’t thought about dermaplaning but yes of course that would definitely make people more shiny. Both through exfoliation and lack of fluff.

Those who dermaplane: does it make the fluff feel a bit stubbly when it regrows? As you have cut off the natural soft tapered end of each little hair and it will now be a blunt end?

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 14/10/2025 13:04

Strawberrypicnic · 12/10/2025 16:28

It's Botox as others say, and they are probably quite over-exfoliated using tretinoin or high strength acids, which isn't good for your skin long term.

Long-term use of tretinoin has been shown to be highly safe and effective, as long as proper sun protection is used every day.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 14/10/2025 14:26

Do you mean like some of the women on MAFS?

valentinka31 · 14/10/2025 15:22

Darkdiamond · 12/10/2025 11:44

It's botox!

isn't necessarily. I swim, have a warm shower, use serum and the right primer (Dior forever glow star filter) and I look nice and shiny too. And I like it. It feels clean and cheery.

having no fluff also feels nice. Warm facial wax done by a lady. Ask for cheeks to be done too.

No. I referred to a single, specific misogynistic comment by another poster.

That is completely seperate from whatever point you think you're making. You've insisted on repeatedly trying to argue about something else entirely.

Please stop ascribing views to me that are not mine. I haven't even READ your posts about women's faces, never mind commented on them. I usually avoid posters like you as I have zero interest in ridiculous squabbling.

We have different views. That's it. Vive la différence.

No, we don’t. You have an incorrect view. A negative opinion about a woman is not automatically misogynistic.

But you probably dont have a tight ,rigid expressinlees face that remains frozen when you smile. A hugr differencr between natural faces with few wrinkles and faces that look like masks!

ladyland · 15/10/2025 01:00

A wire brush and some motor oil does the trick for me.
