When will people stop tucking their tops in at the front of jeans etc

I thought this would be one of those things that wouldn’t last long because people would realise how stupid it looks, but it showing no signs of stopping. Like the woman in this photo. I can’t be the only one who thinks this half tucking thing looks really, really silly. Can I?

Thinking about it, it'll probably die a death (for now) when skinny jeans and more streamlined bottoms come back in properly.

Baggy on baggy just looks bulky.

mcmuffin22 · 27/09/2025 10:40

I think that shirt would be better with a full tuck. But I am not averse to a half tuck at times. I am generally better with things with a defined waist.

Cantonet · 27/09/2025 10:49

I like it too. As a 5 ft 3 person tucking a top into high waisted jeans make my legs look longer. Plus many of my tops are too long & baggy now I've lost weight.
However it's not compulsory to like it.
I hate scarfs wrapped around the waist as I think it makes a person look a little too fashion victim, but each to their own.

ComeTheMoment · 27/09/2025 10:50

I think it works well for lots of people. The problem for me is that Top seem to be designed just to look good with a French tuck, which would be fine if it suited everyone. Often a top is modelled on the website with a French tuck and itseems to need to be worn that way because when it arrives it is really quite loose and baggy.

yonem · 27/09/2025 10:51

I agree OP, the woman in the photo looks ridiculous. It can look ok but only if it’s a very small tuck so there’s not much difference in length with the bit hanging out the back. She has way too much. With the sleeves being too long as well it just looks like she’s a child waiting to grow into clothes bought a couple of sizes too big.

Of all the things to get in a stew about :)) French tucking wasn’t compulsory last time I looked and what people wear is none of your business :))

As an apple, this style gives me a modicum of shape*, and shaves off a stone or so, unlike leaving the top hanging loose.

*I could be delusional but this is what I see in the mirror 😄

ExcellentDesigns · 27/09/2025 11:00

I'm not noticing as many people doing it now as they were a year or so back. I think it looks nice when it's just a tiny tuck of a shorter, more fitted top, but don't like it with the whole front tucked in or just one side, or with really oversized tops. I think the one in the photo looks messy.

Funnywonder · 27/09/2025 11:49

I can only aspire to this look. A French tuck, or any nationality of tuck, draws attention to my giant stomach. Oh and I’m not very stylish, so I probably shouldn’t be here at all😃

2phat2phaf · 27/09/2025 11:55

Tuck the top under your bra band rather than your waistband. Removes the going to the loo faff. (Spectacularly missing the point, I know.)

TheRealGoose · 27/09/2025 12:00

Goodness imagine sitting thinking about this, starting a thread and finding a photo. It’s so weird I have even clicked and read,

the woman in the image looks lovely. You don’t need to “understand it” . We all have things we like and dislike, for example I dislike culottes. I feel no desire to understand cullottes or start a thread proclaiming them stupid and asking when people will stop wearing them, because that would be rather odd.

clothes fully untucked can be very shapeless and unflattering. Clothes fully tucked in can add a lot of bulk round the waist, a French tuck can add some definition and is a happy mid ground and completely up to the individual.

Let’s have a look at you then 😂

Stowickthevast · 27/09/2025 12:07

Wait till you see the one leg jean boot tuck that is apparently in this season 🙄

slowraindrop · 27/09/2025 12:11

I have a long torso and slim hips, and I really like a tuck.

Personally I’m not a fan of long, clingy tops pulled right down over a skirt or trousers, sometimes with a belt added on the natural waistline. I generally think it would look much better with the top tucked in, and a hip length boxy shirt or jacket worn over the top. But each to their own.

SeagullSam2027 · 27/09/2025 12:13

Most people can't get this right which is why it looks odd on them.

How does that work? I'm having trouble picturing this.

OP, I think part of the problem is that particular shirt is really voluminous and those jeans are really high waisted (not a fan of the white shoes either). I don't do it much, but as someone with long legs and a short torso, some shirts just don't work otherwise.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 27/09/2025 12:19

Surely with all the new tops being stupidly short this will just die out anyway? Cropped everything at the moment.

dayslikethese1 · 27/09/2025 12:26

If I leave a loose long top completely untucked, I feel like it's a bit sack/tent-like.

Handeyethingyowl · 27/09/2025 12:29

It looks nice on other people but on me I look awkward and instantly want to untuck it as soon as I am not in front of the mirror.

clipboardz · 27/09/2025 12:31

I don't really see it much anymore

clipboardz · 27/09/2025 12:33

tops are shorter in general, that picture is not current.

HeadNorth · 27/09/2025 12:37

I prefer the half tuck look, as show by the model, to the other trend of tucking in one of the front tails of your shirt and not the other. That does always look a bit silly to me.

The half tuck is a useful way of giving shape to an outfit without the bulkiness of tucking in all the way round - and I think it adds a certain Gallic insoucience if done well.

KawasakiBabe · 27/09/2025 12:38

I did it in the 80’s, been doing it on and off with certain outfits pretty much since then. Don’t people mix their styles up depending on how they feel or what they’re wearing in any given day. I really don’t understand the judgement. Get a life for gods sake!!

Sourisblanche · 27/09/2025 12:44

I got into wearing t-shirts this summer and do this tuck. I’m tall with a long torso and think it looks good.

And I’m still wearing skinny jeans! Shoot meGrin

CornflakeGirlsClub · 27/09/2025 13:02

Model in photo looks great.

I’ve never managed to make these artful tucks look good on me, though. I just look like I’ve got dressed in a rush.
