Is DD right about this dress? (Light-hearted)

https://joanieclothing.com/celia-birtwell-x-joanie-golden-slumbers-flared-sleeve-ruffle-neck-wrap-dress.html

I bought this for various Christmas parties. I love it, having a weakness for hippyish, Stevie Nicks-in-the-1970s getups. My daughter (8, sarcastic, only prepared to wear black leggings) made a horrified face on seeing it. Which of us is right? (In case it helps, I'm slim and pretty flat, so the volumising effect of the ruffle isn't too problematic to my eye).

It’s nowhere near as bad as some I’ve seen from that brand but it does require a certain figure to carry it off.

fluffiphlox · 20/09/2025 12:01

If you like it wear it! (I like the look of this sort of thing but when I try them on I look like I’ve escaped from some institution in my nightie.)

TrimayrAcademy · 20/09/2025 12:02

The shape is fine, it’s the colours/patterns that made my eyebrows shoot up.

If you like it, wear it. The world would be boring if we all liked the same.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2025 12:09

Ooh sorry I’m with your 8 year old but if it suits your style and personality then I’m sure it will look good on you.

ShiningShimmeringSplendid · 20/09/2025 12:13

The yellow is a bit more like a dark mustard in real life, but the colours/ print were what attracted me to it. (I'm pale with dark chestnut hair, so I love autumnal shades.) Anyway, minimalism is not my thing!

Gettingbysomehow · 20/09/2025 12:14

I'd wear that for sure.

Newmeagain · 20/09/2025 12:17

I really like it. Not for everyday wear but definitely for a party etc.

BountifulPantry · 20/09/2025 12:20

I think it’s the old curtain colours that put me off.

Puppylucky · 20/09/2025 12:21

Your daughter is 8! Why are you even considering her opinion when deciding what you want to wear?

botheredandbewilderedagain · 20/09/2025 12:23

I love it!

DinaofCloud9 · 20/09/2025 12:24

Well I'm not a fan but you shouldn't listen to me or your 8 year old child.

If you like it that's all that matters. Please don't listen to your child's views on fashion.

RaraRachael · 20/09/2025 12:26

Sorry it's hideous but if you like it that's all that matters

seven201 · 20/09/2025 12:30

Don’t listen to 8 year olds on stuff like this. Mine told me I looked like a tomliboo from in the night garden when I tried on my new skirt.

Silverbirchleaf · 20/09/2025 12:30

I really love it. It’s nice and flow-y . I don’t think the first picture does it justice. On the model, you get a full sense of the dress.

msmillicentcat · 20/09/2025 12:33

It’s gorgeous! My young daughters love giving me their opinion on my clothes (and their Dad’s clothes actually which is rather amusing). I don’t take much notice as they both pretty much only wear sports wear. Wear the dress, you’ll look fabulous!

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 20/09/2025 12:39

My eyes! Sorry, but your daughter is wise beyond her years, and I think I probably pulled a similar face to hers.

Smartiepants79 · 20/09/2025 12:41

It’s a very specific look and if you’ve got the personality to match it and it suits your aesthetic then go for it.
I don’t were what my daughters wear and they don’t wear what I wear!

Your daughter is 8- why on earth are you taking style advice from an 8 year old? It's a lovely, interesting dress.

It's considerably nicer than most dresses suggested on here.

I suggest your daughter googles Celia Birtwell.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 20/09/2025 12:55

Yeah, I’ve walked into this trap before. I’m not expressing an opinion until OP clarifies exactly what she means by ‘lighthearted’…

olderbutwiser · 20/09/2025 12:58

Tricky. Obviously you have to wear it now, you can’t give in to your DD. And if you are tall and those colours look good on you then it will be pretty fabulous. But if you are not tall or if those colours make you look as if you are dying from the plague then you are in trouble.

MedievalNun · 20/09/2025 12:58

I think if the sleeves were plain and one of the colours from the print (maybe the green?) I’d like it more, as it is the sleeves look like they’re from a different dress.

But if you like it and can carry it off go for it (says the woman who either wears 1940s styles or Steampunk)

BigBirdOfPrey · 20/09/2025 13:01

I think it’s awful.
i think the model suits it.

NoelFurlong · 20/09/2025 13:01

It’s horrifically ugly.

It’s given me flashbacks as it’s exactly what my Latin teacher would have worn.

Emanwenym · 20/09/2025 13:02

Wear it. As long as you're more Stevie Nicks than stevedore you'll look great,

duothea · 20/09/2025 13:03

If you like Stevie Nicks's style have a look at Little Lies. They're a Scottish small business that have some really cool clothes
