Anyone want to talk Autumn shopping wish lists?

I know it’s not even August yet, and I’ve still not gone on my summer holiday yet - but there’s a chill in the air, I’ve packed a box of freshly picked blackberries in the freezer for autumnal crumbles and while looking for school uniform today, noticed quite a few burgundy items in shop windows.

So what’s on your autumnal shopping list?

Im after a pair of black knee high boots. (My old ones finally had to be retired last year, beyond what could be repaired.)

I’ve just bought a dark brown cashmere jumper on vinted. Am now going to start the hunt for the perfect dark green cashmere jumper or cardie.

I think I need new work trousers but not sure what shape we’re doing this year. (Wide leg ? That doesn’t work well with puddles.)

Anyone else with a list for when the new season starts arriving in the shops?

Joining in the autumn chat! I’m another on the Mounjaro journey. I’ve been able to dig out the clothes bags from under the bed and currently have a gorgeous brown skirt and some pink tops joining the wardrobe. I also have a wonderful turquoise wool coat which I should fit by the time it’s cold enough to wear it.

And a chocolate brown suede jacket. The teenager had purloined that but I’m taking it back.

What I want is some nice tweedy trousers but not actual tweed because that’s itchy.

A burgundy or plum jumper. I’m allergic to wool, even cashmere, so it will have to be a cotton knit, or a man made fibre, or be big enough to wear a top underneath.

I’d also like a kilt. Missed the Sainsbury one but I think I’d like a plaid, or a heathery mix.

Oh and I want some black jeans, but that’s relatively easy.

Next is absolutely killing it again. They had some lovely knit bodice/poplin skirt dresses over the summer and they’ve done them again but with sleeves. In a dark brown or a khaki. The bodice has a buttoned Henley look. Really lovely and I want it. Very much!

There’s also a kind of dark cherry/burgundy trench which is utterly gorgeous, and a fair amount of cherry prints. I love cherries!

But apart from that I’m pretty well set up and very excited to be rediscovering old favourites.

Another one saying that if you find a major piece (like a winter coat) that you love be then find a way to go for it (without getting into debt obviously). I tried on a beautiful coat in jigsaw last winter. It was long, and I can never find a long coat that looks good on my as I am very short in the leg for my height, but I was dithering over the spend, and by the time I decided to go for it, it was sold out. Brown too, so would have been perfect this year too!

Amazingly, as the colour is so in, I am struggling to replace the too big burgundy trousers I’ve sold on Vinted.

I would like at least a 32” inside leg, decent fabric with a good weight, wide leg (but not palazzo wide). I am after smart tailored type trousers, rather than smart casual - a lot seem ok, but are then ruined by a drawstring waist. Would rather not be paying £200 for them …

Has anyone seen any fabulous ones, please?

Reiss??

Cantonet · 18/09/2025 09:28

For those of you looking for a wool coat in autumnal colours Mango have released their classic wool coats in shades of Brown & Wine. These coats seem to suit everyone - unlined & easy to wear. I have Camel & Khaki ones that I bought last year, so don't need any more.

Reiss??

Yes, maybe, they're one of the contenders. The burgundy looks a bit brown, and I'm a bit scared of Reiss - one of the shops I'd never have dared go near pre-weight loss. 😆May well end up ordering them to try though, thank you.

(Burgundy really is a broad church this year - I think of burgundy as a very dark red, but some are quite brown and some quite purple this year.)

I got my burgundy trousers from River Island. They're very comfortable and I dress them up for work or evenings out but also wear them with a tshirt and trainers to dress them down.

We've just acquired a big River Island, will go and have a look. If I search on 'burgundy trousers' on the site, I get every shade of red and purple. There are a couple of promising pairs if the colour is (less purple) right in the flesh, thank you.

oh yes, I saw these released! They are likely to sell out. I am lusting after the wine one, it’s beautiful. Although practically speaking brown would be better! Thank you for sharing!

yes I have noticed some items looking brown when they’re described as burgundy!

TragicMuse · 18/09/2025 13:52

I’m pondering burgundy vs maroon…

They’re sometimes the same, sometimes used interchangeably.

Burgundy feels like a more expensive shade. Makes one think of wine.

Maroon feels a bit school-uniform. I think maroon would be brown-tinged, but that’s probably because I’m linguistically stepping to marron.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/09/2025 14:36

I have supposed burgundy loafers that are very brown. It means the work well with both though, so that’s a plus.

thanks for posting about the mango coats @Cantonet i’ll try those out at the weekend. I really need a new winter coat.

Nomoretopswithblacktrousers · 18/09/2025 14:50

Agree on burgundy items looking brown. I sent back quite a few things that looked brown and warm rather than burgundy and cool.

PeonyPatch · 18/09/2025 15:06

Can vouch for mango barrel jeans if anyone is interested! Only £35.99 bargain !

I tried the mango coat on in burgundy beautiful colour and shape however the small absolutely drowned me

I really would like a burgundy 1/4 zip jumper that’s not got a logo on it to wear with a pink shirt or a similar jumper that’s not round neck. Round neck just gives me massive boobs, v neck makes me look like I have a school jumper on. Has anyone seen anything. I like this from gym and coffee but not the logo.

Phew! Have managed to buy the Fitflop brown suede loafers from another website. Very happy.

But now pondering socks. I can't wear anything with wool in it, but want the look of fine merino wool. Any suggestions?

Last year Sainsbury's did some fine knit socks which weren't wool. I got them in pale pink, pale blue and cream. Haven't looked there yet this year but maybe worth a try?

are you after the fine wool look or chunky? If fine, then bamboo socks from sock shop would be a good option. If you are after chunky knit, Tescos had some nice ones recently that aren't real wool

There’s quite a lot of things being sold as burgundy that is actually maroon.

Tkmaxx have the sock shop bamboo socks in many colours inc actually burgundy, in the men’s section.

Arraminta · 19/09/2025 17:49

Thank you for the socks suggestions!

I agree about burgundy Vs maroon. Burgundy should be a deep wine colour (hence the name) whilst maroon has a more earthy, brown tone.

Just ordered the Hush Millie skirt in plum. I bought the charcoal version last year and got way more wear out of it than I thought I would so I couldn’t resist it in one of my favourite colours.

Still looking for the perfect brown cord mini skirt, three years so far and the nearest I’ve come to finding one that ticks all the boxes was on Shein (it fell apart after about four wears). It’s a mission at this point.

Quoting myself because after three years I have finally found my perfect brown cord mini! Randomly saw it in a New Look web ad a few days back and hit buy so hard I nearly sprained my finger. It arrived today and it’s exactly right and what I wanted.

Just need it to get cold enough to wear now…
