Anyone want to talk Autumn shopping wish lists?

I know it’s not even August yet, and I’ve still not gone on my summer holiday yet - but there’s a chill in the air, I’ve packed a box of freshly picked blackberries in the freezer for autumnal crumbles and while looking for school uniform today, noticed quite a few burgundy items in shop windows.

So what’s on your autumnal shopping list?

Im after a pair of black knee high boots. (My old ones finally had to be retired last year, beyond what could be repaired.)

I’ve just bought a dark brown cashmere jumper on vinted. Am now going to start the hunt for the perfect dark green cashmere jumper or cardie.

I think I need new work trousers but not sure what shape we’re doing this year. (Wide leg ? That doesn’t work well with puddles.)

Anyone else with a list for when the new season starts arriving in the shops?

I'd appreciate any recommendations you have for knitwear that lasts longer than a season.

I'd like the following:

  1. A decent quality raincoat that is at least knee length (longer would be better) and warm.
  2. A long coat that is fitted or has some shape to it that looks a bit more polished than my raincoat.
  3. A pair of black and chocolate coloured jeans in perhaps straight leg. Wide leg is flattering on me but straight leg is better for avoiding puddles and I walk a lot.
  4. 2x chunky knits
  5. Some crew neck jumpers
  6. Some cardigans
  7. Long sleeved t shirts for layering
  8. A leather chocolate brown skirt
  9. A pleated midi skirt or wool/ knitted skirt (grey, navy, khakhi, burgundy or chocolate brown).
10. Some dresses which I could layer with a chunky knit over the top. 11. I have some ankle boots already but I'd like some knee high boots. 12. Decent welly boots, that are comfy, look reasonable and keep my feet dry.

I'm going to try to find images of said items I like, put together some outfits and then edit based on what I already have in my wardrobe. It is wet, windy and cold where I am for a good 8 months of the year so my autumn/winter wardrobe sees a lot of wear and needs to be robust.

For long sleeved layering T-shirts, Arket. Maybe Uniqlo, though I must admit I’ve never understood the hype about their stuff and can rarely find anything that fits.

AlertCat · 10/09/2025 07:06

@Evergreen21 I have a couple of cardigans from Seasalt that have been worn since 2014 and 2015. They still look tidy and they still do the job. Can’t fault them. I haven’t had anything from them in recent years but certainly they used to be spot on in terms of quality.

GameOfJones · 10/09/2025 07:39

Not a particularly stylish buy buy practical.... I bought this jacket in TKMaxx yesterday. The colour is really nice in person, almost a stormy blue-grey so I thought it was a good alternative to the black that I also tried on.

Warm and comfortable which I'll be glad of come winter walks and it had a good hood that covered my head but didn't fall over my eyes and pockets that were comfortable to put my hands in. I've learned from bitter experience what I need from a warm coat!

@Evergreen21 River Island for jeans. It's been a revelation.

I bought some great chunky knits in the White Stuff sale.

Russell and Bromley for boots. Pricey but if you take them back when they need heeling, it's about the same price as Timpsons and they come back cleaned and polished.

I'm finding WS/SS cardigans a bit boxy for me, i need things a bit more fitted; I've replaced a jumper and a cardigan that had worn out with pre-owned from Vinted. Exactly the same item for less than a tenner all in.

PeonyPatch · 10/09/2025 08:54

For basics I’d recommend Arket, Cos, Massimo Dutti and Uniqlo. I’ve just bought a couple of basics from Cos (white vest top for layering, and a nice boxy white t shirt)

I made the mistake of watching an Instagram live for one of my favourite boutique shops (independent) last night, and I now feel like I need to remortgage. So many beautiful bits. I’ve also decided I need x2 good quality jeans. I’m interested in straight and barrel shaped, though I’ve never tried the barrel shape.

Brownbearwhitebear · 10/09/2025 09:38

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie assuming from the cost of your bras that you are relatively big chested, in which case I get why Uniqlo doesnt work for you - I love a lot of their stuff but it doesnt for me either, it's not cut for curves!

I can highly recommend the 'carrot' jeans from M&S if you want to try the 'barrel' shape. Really flattering cut.

Thank you @Arraminta thats a great recommendation. I’ll see if I can get to a store and try them on!

I must admit I find jeans shopping such a minefield! I feel like I have to dedicate serious time and energy into finding the right pair!

I've bought barrel and balloon jeans from River Island - they are a revelation! I don't think I'd been in River Island since the turn of the century 😂

I also tried a pair in M& S which were like cowboy chaps and looked amazing. Though a little wide and OTT for everyday wear.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/09/2025 12:48

I bought some shoes for when I'm at work and not in uniform because they are neutral, comfortable and go with everything in my work wardrobe and above all not too high heeled, I can't do heels any more.I got them in black and latte. I think the pointed toe gives them a more modern feel. Also come in wide fit and half sizes and are on sale - £50 off.

You're welcome. I love them so much and wish they'd do more colours (I have them in black and blue).

I’ve been hearing good things about RI jeans! Though like you I stopped shopping there about 10-15 years ago 🥲

What kind of black are they, I’m looking for like a faded distressed black dunno how to describe it x

Arraminta · 10/09/2025 13:39

They're a slightly washed black. Definitely not a fresh black.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2025 17:54

@Brownbearwhitebear Exactly!

petitpasta · 10/09/2025 18:35

Pretty sure I walked past this on my way to the food hall earlier today. Sadly, it looks cheap in real life and I suspect it would look scruffy very quickly

Ah? Thats a shame!

BangingOn · 10/09/2025 21:19

@Evergreen21 Aligne have a nice faux leather chocolate brown skirt if you’re not fussed about it being real leather.

I got some barrel jeans from mint velvet a couple of weeks ago. Someone I followed on insta posted about them being good ‘entry’ level barrel jeans. They come in a few colours, I went for the dark indigo. They are very nice on, and flattering. Great so far with trainers and loafers. I can see me wearing them a lot.

On a more budget level, I’ve found M&S and Zara good for jeans in recent years, but I haven’t tried straight or barrel from there.

@Arraminta m&s are sold out of the jeans!

Oh no! Have a look on Vinted there's usually some for sale on there.

PeonyPatch · 11/09/2025 19:43

Thank you @Arraminta I went to M&S this evening and I’ve bought x2 pairs of the carrot jeans! They’re so nice! I bought a light wash denim and the washed black. I never wear light wash but they looked good on

now to figure out what shoes to wear with them… I feel they could look good with a backless loafer or Ugg slippers even (I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea!)

Pleased you like them. I wear mine with Adidas Campus, or Birkenstock Boston Clogs or some black chunky loafers from H&M. Haven't tried them with boots yet but do have some Ugg Ultra Lows so will see how they look.
