Wedding guest outfit, seriously?

I need to buy an outfit for a wedding so I was interested to see this Guardian article. But dear God the first one they list can only be described as a sack! Wedding guest outfits

I liked the pineapple one and the red spotted one. But for summer holiday dresses not wedding guest dresses. The khaki sack looks like she's thrown up on the front.

Looks like what they might have dressed a witch in to burn her on the stake.

That is exactly what it looks like! What a godawful sack of a dress!

And Jess Cartner Morley is in her 50s and has been the Guardian fashion editor for 25 years!!

What is your point here?

LF11 · 07/06/2025 09:09

Living proof of why I never read the Guardian. Horrendous. Everyone of them!

That one's not for me, but I like most of them, although I wouldn't accept a wedding invite if I got one as I hate weddings. Most of them would be fine for general weekend wafting.

GetMeOutOfHere20 · 07/06/2025 09:28

Omg they’re all horrific

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 07/06/2025 09:57

Maybe she got chat gpt to write the article but typed weeding instead of wedding

JustWhatIAlwaysWanted · 07/06/2025 10:19

Mostly hideous. The light pink one that's compared to something Carrie wore in the original SATC was the best of the bunch. I do like the Guardian but always take its fashion coverage with a pinch of salt.

BadSkiingMum · 07/06/2025 11:07

I like some of the dresses but most seem much more suitable for holiday evening wear or tropical wedding. And what’s with the almost total lack of sleeves?

None of them would remotely stand muster for an overcast Saturday in a chilly church in the shires, let alone an outdoor reception and marquee wedding breakfast on a day when the happy couple have been way too optimistic about the forecast!

Is it my age? All women’s journalism now seems to be “curated” by people with no suss or life experience.

The prevalence of these kind of “listicle” articles in newspapers suggests to me there’s not much actual curation or genuine recommendations, but rather whatever the PR industry is pushing at any particular time.

Sandals and socks?!?! I am so glad I have no idea of fashion these days! 😂

It says at the bottom that the author has been delving into style for a decade, I fear she has delved beyond the bottom of the barrel and hit the earth’s core.

I am 60 and perhaps not her target audience, but I have been to many weddings and you would stand out and not in a good way in nearly all those outfits.

Maybe she’s ended up on a parallel universe on the dark web!

MidnightMeltdown · 07/06/2025 12:19

I heard that the medieval monk look was in this summer. You could get the hair do to match OP.

manicpixieschemegirl · 07/06/2025 12:26

She looks like she’s about to be pelted with rotten fruit in the town square. Although, it’s not dissimilar to the horrifying dresses frequently suggested by certain posters on S&B.

SapatSea · 07/06/2025 13:58

I wondered if the Guardian staff were having a laff!!

TheAutumnCrow · 07/06/2025 14:01

Aposterhasnoname · 07/06/2025 08:52

What the fuck has she got on her feet? You wouldn’t think it was possible to make that dress look worse than it is, but sticking those shoes and socks on her feet have managed it.

We’re back to the infantilisation of women, as now performed by the bloody Guardian.

Hey, here’s how to look infantile and sexy for the male gaze and the critical gaze and bring out your inner mindless consumer, wimmin.

This. Exactly what I was going to say. The writer got pissed, was close to missing a deadline and got ChatGPT to put the article together for her.

Which, predictably, came up with absolute shine.

Remagirl19 · 07/06/2025 14:30

Jeez, what a horror show. Feels like a skit tbh.

TizerorFizz · 07/06/2025 14:37

@BadSkiingMum I agree about sleeves being absent on nearly all of them. They are definitely high summer or wedding abroad dresses. Imagine packing the linen ones and finding you had no iron?

LarkAscendings · 07/06/2025 04:18

Madge from Neighbours goes to a wedding in Adelaide circa 1991.

See this was one of the ones I quite liked as a dress (but it might be a bit loud for a wedding!)

StanfreyPock · 07/06/2025 15:38

I'm used to rolling my eyes at most of the Guardian fashion articles but this takes things to another level of sheer ridiculousness.

I'm concerned about the person 2nd from right in the photo who looks to be in the throes of some gastric crisis.

Thinking about wedding guest outfits myself for one later this year, this makes me think my gardening/painting clothes would look pretty on trend, paired with woolly socks and sandals.

BIossomtoes · 07/06/2025 16:16

The only one of those dresses I’d ever consider wearing is the pink linen one - at a push.

Turmerictolly · 07/06/2025 16:40

Some of those dresses, almost all, are hideous. The gold smock crommock one is just awful and the prices of some of them are shocking.
