I need to buy an outfit for a wedding so I was interested to see this Guardian article. But dear God the first one they list can only be described as a sack! Wedding guest outfits

I think I liked about 3 of those. And at least one of those (the fruit picker one) was far too casual for any wedding I've ever attended.

Having just read the thread with the mother of the bride planning on wearing a strapless black spangled evening gown to her DD’s Church wedding, I am imagining the photos with the MOG turning up in the witch to be burned at the stake sack, with a quick change into the gold outfit for later.

slinkiemalinkiey · 07/06/2025 00:05

That's typical of the kind of dresses that are always posted by a couple of people on here.

madaboutpurple · 07/06/2025 03:34

Truly dreadful!

pontivex · 07/06/2025 04:10

I thought it was Sir Grayson Perry to begin with dressed as Clare!

SirChenjins · 07/06/2025 04:11

To be fair, it’s not a million miles away from the wedding guest outfit suggestions that often crop up on MN ‘S&B’! Amishwear is a favourite of some on here, and they get quite sniffy when other posters laugh at them.

Madge from Neighbours goes to a wedding in Adelaide circa 1991.

And Jess Cartner Morley is in her 50s and has been the Guardian fashion editor for 25 years!!

Mothership4two · 07/06/2025 04:28

Feel sorry for the poor model having to wear that

It's giving me toddler vibes (wearing mum's shoes) - if you dressed your toddler in oversized dresses made of stained sack cloth

Even Patsy and Eddie had better taste.

Wedding theme: Bubbles the PA meets time-traveller meets panto drag

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 07/06/2025 05:48

The Guardian is trolling women (as usual).

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 07/06/2025 05:52

These 4 are absolutely fine. Most are not great and too many are linen. Creases like mad!

@ArtemisiaTheArtist it's just missing the splodge of spilt coffee down her front!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 07/06/2025 06:06

These beauties are clearly mother of the groom outfits. Someone clearly has a few issues with her MIL!

I inow. She didn’t write the dress article but she did write the socks article. I’ve never rated her tbh and at times she’s contradicted herself with articles just a week or two apart, which I find hilarious.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/06/2025 08:29

Uggh. Most of those are horrid. Weddings are fairly easy to dress for - you need to look smart and appropriate but not too flashy. No one wants an uber sexy, thigh flashing wedding guest, but equally you want everyone to look like they have made an effort to look nice for the occasion.

You also have to account for the fact will be a long day - probably 11am to midnight perhaps with a number of different locations - some outside.

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 07/06/2025 08:38

It reminds me of a smock for painting when I was in nursery over 50 years ago.

I miss the laugh emoji 😂 for that dress!

This! And same of the great comments on this thread. Why aren’t we allowed to laugh any more?

minnienono · 07/06/2025 08:43

I’ve seen some pretty similar suggestions here too, shapeless sacks

Because enough posters use it maliciously to cause an issue.
It's not mumsnet to blame, it's the mumsnetters who do it.

Oceangrey · 07/06/2025 08:48

Ha, oh no the first one is so bad. Are they reaching for comments and engagement?

I like most of the other, apart from the black minidress and the gold smocked horror.

Er, you've just quoted a poster who lamenting the lack of a laugh emoji with a laugh emoji in her post. You can still use them but it's there for all to see.

Aposterhasnoname · 07/06/2025 08:52

What the fuck has she got on her feet? You wouldn’t think it was possible to make that dress look worse than it is, but sticking those shoes and socks on her feet have managed it.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 07/06/2025 08:58

Definitely an outfit for the wedding of someone you hate. “What does it matter what I look like? They’ll be divorced in two years and no one will ever see the pictures” 😉
