We have a family wedding to attend in July. I’m trying to find a dress for my 16 year old daughter. Everything I have suggested has been met with a big thumbs down. She has just shown me this dress. I really don’t think it’s right but thought I would see what others could come up with please.

It's a strippers dress....

The dress, in my opinion, is provocative. It’s screams, “Look at me” and shows far too much flesh. Most definitely not appropriate for a 16 year old, not appropriate for a church wedding.
In my opinion really not appropriate in any way for any decent young lady! And no decent young man would want to be seen with his intended dressed like that showing her boobs and her thigh practically up to her knickers.

But that is just my opinion.

Decent?! Jesus. What century do you think it is?

The dress in the OP is horrible imo and absolutely not wedding appropriate, but please don't judge character by clothing.

My dd has just bought this one from River Island https://www.riverisland.com/p/blue-floral-print-halter-neck-maxi-dress-924174 www.riverisland.com/p/blue-floral-print-halter-neck-maxi-dress-924174]]]] - with a jacket over it for the ceremony?

The dress is fine just not for a church wedding! I think the split up the side is what’s most inappropriate.

Really nice 👏

Absolutely NOT! DD is 16 this is not suitable for her age or for a family wedding. It is too revealing and I wouldn’t want my granddaughter wearing that for an evening out and she is 10 years older than your DD. For the record my granddaughter wouldn’t wear this and if she did her fiancé would disapprove.
I hope you can find some that your DD and you find mutually acceptable

I am more worried that your GD is only allowed to wear what her fiancé approves!! She should be able to wear what she wants. I also think you should support your GD to be herself and confident with her own decisions. Her dress choices are nothing to do with you.

OP I think the dress is fine can she wear a pashmina with it in church. I like all the ones suggested too - apart from the green spotty one and the pink one with a bow on the shoulder ~ they are lovely but I would more
imagine them on someone a little older.

In terms of shoulders out in a church - the last 2 weddings I have been too the bride has worn a strapless dress and no veil and many younger people wore strapless dresses and looked lovely!

She is just being a teenager and copying what the social media people are wearing at weddings and events.

I nearly -posted this, but didn't like the open back.

My teenage DD has just bought this for a wedding.

I think it’s inappropriate too. But I think you should buy one for your granddaughter for her birthday
-it’s not up to her fiancé to approve or disapprove! 🤣

Redredwiner · 30/05/2025 18:22

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I wavered over the open back but I think you could wear a cover up for church and after it would be fine, the teen may go for it on that basis!

I would not wish my granddaughter to be wearing a dress like that. She is NOT cheap trash.

notificationstalksettings · 30/05/2025 19:18

it's fine, my DN wears that sort of thing to family things all the time. It's not my taste but she likes it and feels comfortable and good in it. Not sure why there is so much pearl clutching going on. I am more shocked by some of the suggestions for 16 year old girls on here.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 30/05/2025 19:21

Something like this (though a bit pricey) is more elegant. And wedding outfits should be imho. https://www.reiss.com/style/su660286/f67640#f67640

I’m not a fan of the first. Two much flesh on show for a wedding and the yellow while fashionable right now is not going to age well with that dress design.

It might not be quite right for the occasion but I can see why she likes it. If you can’t wear something like that when you’re 16 when can you wear it?

what are you wearing OP? That might help find something in keeping with a suitable feel

When you're working as a night club hostess?

BoldBlueZebra · 30/05/2025 19:21

What about a wide leg trouser and waistcoat combo that’s everywhere at the mo and it looks mature and sophisticated without screaming nightclub

DD had something similar in sage green for a friends wedding a few weeks ago.

I think this is a great option. Similar vibe to the original but much more appropriate for the occasion.

VictorianChic · 30/05/2025 19:27

Lovely colour but more of a clubbing dress I think.
