Wear same outfit to wedding

ClearHoldBuild · 19/05/2025 15:45

My niece married in 2021 and her brother is getting married later this year.
I adore what I wore to my niece’s wedding and haven’t worn it since.
Would it be appropriate to wear the same outfit to my nephew’s wedding four years later?

Can people explain what is wrong with wearing an item of clothing more than once?

Do they have the same expectation about men, many of whom will wear the same suit, shirt and tie for many weddings? If not, why not?

I absolutely would if you love it and feel great in it.
It's a personal thing, but I'd be thinking more about making myself feel good on the day rather than worrying about people noticing and commenting.

This is my thinking exactly. No one is going to remember or care what you wear. The main think is you feel good. I don't think anyone is going to be comparing with photos 4 years ago.

Sunontheair · 20/05/2025 10:22

I absolutely would, particularly if I knew I looked good in it. I hate this rampant consumerism that means a we can’t possibly wear an outfit to a wedding 4 years later, just in case Aunt Brenda recognises it.

gingercat02 · 20/05/2025 11:44

My husband has worn the same outfit (kilt) to every wedding or formal occasion for the last 23 years, including our wedding. I doubt anyone has commented, but as women we must have a new frock each time!

tootiredtobeinspired · 20/05/2025 11:59

Absolutely you should wear it if you like it and it makes you happy. Honestly where has this idea come from that you should not be seen in the same outfit twice? Its ridiculous, the planet is burning but lets consume ever more because god forbid someone wears the same dress twice in 4 years 😱

RuthW · 20/05/2025 12:02

Absolutely not. The same people will be there.

janeandmarysmum · 20/05/2025 12:12

Why wouldn't you? I genuinely don't understand. It's just a dress... (In my defence, I don't 'do' fashion...).

DappledThings · 20/05/2025 12:27

RuthW · 20/05/2025 12:02

Absolutely not. The same people will be there.

And? What is the actual thought process these people will have?

Something like "Oh my goodness. Someone is wearing a dress for at least the second time. That's outrageous. So embarrassing. Oh, wait a minute, what the hell am I thinking? It's entirely unremarkable actually. I'm being ridiculous. Where's the prosecco?"

PorgyandBess · 20/05/2025 12:52

I think the take from this thread is some people care about wearing the same outfit to 2 weddings with many of the same guests attending both, and some people would
not care at all.

Neither is wrong and no one has said it is ‘outrageous’ or ‘embarrassing’.

oustedbymymate · 20/05/2025 12:55

I would if you love it!!! It's not like you're MOB

Although mother of the bride wearing the same outfit to wedding one and two would be craic!!!

So what?

Are you the princess of Wales?

BlondeAussie · 20/05/2025 13:13

Why not?

Princess Anne's been wearing her blue coat since 1976... :)

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 20/05/2025 13:14

I absolutely would. It was 4 years ago, not 4 weeks ago. Nobody will notice on the day and even when the photos come out I doubt anyone will be playing Spot the Difference and comparing guest's outfits.

The late Queen, Princess Anne and Kate Middleton often 'outfit repeat' and were/are praised for being thrifty and environmentally responsible.

Here's Princess Anne's go-to wedding coat since 1976

Wear same outfit to wedding
PorgyandBess · 20/05/2025 13:49

Princess Anne is hardly a beacon of style. She really wouldn’t care about such things.

countrygirl99 · 20/05/2025 14:08

Princess Anne is well known for having common sense and being practical.

TheCoralMoose · 20/05/2025 15:14

I think Princess Anne wore the same outfit including hat she wore to Charle's and Diana's wedding to another wedding.

mondaytosunday · 20/05/2025 15:23

God yes! I have one outfit for weddings and it has been used half a dozen times. No one will remember what you wore four years ago unless it’s particularly unique.

Enrichetta · 20/05/2025 15:26

Shuttered · 19/05/2025 16:05

i have about three wedding outfits (in the black and green that so horrify a significant subset of as wedding wear) and I think I’ve worn those to all the weddings I’ve been at for about fifteen years! I wouldn’t think twice, OP.

Oh yes...

Ultimately nobody cares as long as your outfit is appropriate!

spoonbillstretford · 20/05/2025 15:51

Men always wear the same thing. I don't see why not.

bookmarket · 20/05/2025 16:25

Not weddings - but whenever friends wear the same outfit to an event I've seen them in before, my reaction is always ' I love you in that dress. Its so good on you'. We should all get more used to wearing again and again the things that make us happy and look good. Me included.

housethatbuiltme · 20/05/2025 16:42

Wear it if you want, no one will care (I doubt anyone even remembers unless it was wild or offensive). Clothes are made to be worn more than once.

I would struggle to tell you what virtually anyone wore to my wedding or the last few I have been too (except one couple at a wedding 10 years ago where the guy shower up in torn and paint stained jogging bottoms and a holey jumper like he had just come from a job site and his girlfriend in micro skirt spandex clubbing dress... really unmatched outfits between them and really weird at a cocktail style wedding in a very posh stately home).

That's what I'd be thinking... no wait, just the last sentence 😄 🥂

RampantIvy · 20/05/2025 19:13

really unmatched outfits between them

I don't dress to match what DH is wearing.
