I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

I agree with you.

This is Style and Beauty, not fashion and beauty. I like to look stylish and reasonably current, yet feel comfortable and not like a fashion victim.

I tend to wear old favourites and buy something new to wear with them to look current. I never bought into the white trainer look as I already had a perfectly good pair of trainers (not white), and I don't view trainers as a fashion item, but something comfortable to wear on my feet when doing lots of walking.

TBH, until I joined mumsnet I never knew that fashionistas took trainers so seriously. I do view other shoes more as a fashion item though.

I don't buy highly fashionable clothes that I know will date very quickly as I make my clothes last for many years, and have never shopped in Zara, because I have never found anything I liked in there (and don't understand why it is so popular)

I love Zara for their trafaluc brand jeans - they are an amazing fot for apple shapes

Cantonet · 18/04/2025 16:15

Listening to @anon2022anon& following her advice on showing what you've just bought - here's mine. I absolutely adore fringing & the neutral colour is right up my street. I'm 61 & many of the reviewers are not young. I'm quite sure that many on this thread will hate it 😁

Mine are copies of L & Y ones. I didn't like the printed fabric they have, so had replicas made in different fabrics I sourced myself.

I am tempted by these rompers. I wear them much looser than the model's.

(I have boilersuits that are genuine L&Y but they are plain colours)

RampantIvy · 18/04/2025 16:24

One thing that annoys me is when looking at maxi dresses online only to see that they aren't maxi at all, but midi legth.

I know maxis aren't the height of fasion, but I like to wear one in the house at the end of a hot day after a shower.

anon2022anon · 18/04/2025 16:28

@RampantIvy I hate that too! I've been known to buy the tall version at 5'7 so whatever I buy is actually maxi.

@Cantonet I like it 😊 to go with pale denim for spring?

UpMyself · 18/04/2025 16:31

@Cantonet , I like that!

Divebar2021 · 18/04/2025 17:08

I’ve thought quite a lot about my personal style and I’ve realised that a lot of the shapes I’ve gravitated to were always the shapes I liked in my 20’s in the 90’s. I
love a fitted top with skinny sleeves… can’t stand the big poooffyy sleeved tops and dresses that have been doing the rounds in recent years. I pair them with oversized or slouchy trousers… I always wanted men’s suiting as a teenager and now I can actually find that style of trouser. A do have quite a few men’s suit jackets that I’ve picked up over the last couple of years but I now give them a more fitted shape on the waist with these silver buttons I found on Amazon. They have a push back so they can be added and removed. I’m able to get quite a nipped in waist but still a quite strong shoulder. My overall look is quite graphic.. I like some friction in an outfit… my old Che Guevara T shirt from NYC with my work clothes.

@anon2022anon yes maybe, that's a good idea.
I will have a real life try on session
I don't normally wear shorter jackets but I need one to go with longish midis. Plus I have a love of neutrals & fringing. Come to think of it it will probably look good with my barrel jeans.
It is lovely @UpMyself.
I was watching Melissa Murrell on You Tube last week & she was saying she has about 5 different jackets for her spring capsule. Apparently most of us don't have enough different styles & the wrong jacket/coat can ruin an outfit.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2025 17:57

& she was saying she has about 5 different jackets for her spring capsule

Would you class having 5 jackets for just one season a capsule?

I thought a capsule wardrobe was meant to be more minimalist.

FoxedByACat · 18/04/2025 17:58

Problem is the bloody weather in this country. You probably need 5 jackets per season to cover all eventualities!

polkaloca · 18/04/2025 17:59

Apparently most of us don't have enough different styles & the wrong jacket/coat can ruin an outfit.

People really underestimate the importance of jackets and coats particularly with our climate!

polkaloca · 18/04/2025 18:00

I don't really do the capsule wardrobe thing though.

Cantonet · 18/04/2025 18:05

Well maybe she didn't use the term capsule @RampantIvy. But more what she was wearing in Spring. She then went on to say she wears about 30 coats & jackets over the year. I was fascinated because that's a lot! But bearing in mind her job running a style academy she probably needs a lot more than most.

I class 5 jackets for one WEEKEND as a capsule. 😂I used to keep 3 jackets in the boot of my car at all times (although I’m now down to 2 as I lent 1 - and then gave it permanently - to a friend when we were away for the weekend last month). My ‘boot jackets’ are in addition to whatever jackets I take with me to actually wear. 😝I probably have 30+ jackets. I’m not including actual coats in that number. Including coats probably gets me to near 3 figures. 😳 In my defence, my father is exactly the same so I think it’s genetic. 😂

I do agree (obviously!) that the wrong jacket or coat can completely spoil the look of an ‘outfit’.

Floisme · 18/04/2025 18:16

anon2022anon · 18/04/2025 15:47

@Floisme I've also moved to a longer skirt, I feel much more like me when it hits my ankle or below. It's not something I've been drawn to before, I've never been a skrt lover, and I hate tiered skirts with a passion so that normally writes out about 90% of the high street offering.

My skirt wearing comes and goes in waves @anon2022anon but lately I can't stop thinking about a long straight skirt from La Redoute that I wore to death in the 90s. It had a deep pleat at the back for movement, which is partly why I'm struggling to replace it - so many current ones have a high split instead which I don't want. I did find a vintage one in fine wool from Next (another label that used to be great) but now I want a summer one.

A friend had a suit in the 90s that I used to really like, also with a long, straight skirt plus a longish, very fitted jacket, and I've been thinking about that too. I still like an androgynous blazer though.

LaRevolution · 18/04/2025 18:25

Oof there's a lot going on since I last posted!

I'm really sorry, I can't remember who said what, but some random thoughts in no order, following the last couple of pages:

  • I love La Redoute - it has sooo much stock I think it's hard to avoid finding something you like! Good discounts and sales too. Their swimwear used to be really excellent - it was one of the few cheap high st places you could get cup-size bikini tops in the late 90s/early aughts.
  • That H&M chore jacket - yes maybe b&w stripes is a bit Beetlejuice 😆 I'm actually in a city today and tried on the New Look one in pale sage/khaki and it was lovely. It ran slightly large though so I left it. Also I'm not used to paying £30 for New Look at the mo as I've been dedicated to Vinted for a while - it feels like a lot!
  • I also called in to Next and the stuff was a lot nicer than I expected, especially summery linen trousers. I have a beloved pink striped tapered pair from Next that are finally about to fall apart - might replace them with some burnt orange striped wide-legs.

Shock I have about 5 blazer style jackets, 1 leather jacket, 1 warm winter woollen jacket, 1 wool coat, 1 waterproof parka (whch probably gets worn the most because of the weather where I live), 1 denim jacket and 1 down filled light jacket for spring and autumn (when it isn't raining). 11 in total.

I’ve just bought a few things for summer but I don’t know if they are in style.

The gingham dress picture wasn’t accepted to post. Loads of gingham these days and it’s a print I love.
I also found a jacket from One Hundred Stars that I adore. And linen shirts never go out of style.

Neverenoughbiscuits · 18/04/2025 20:55

I generally have a bit of uniform which I don't divert from. It's very dull and I guess the only thing which makes it current are the cut of trousers, shoes or some detailing.

Bought a few things this last week:
Me and Em - black wide leg linen trousers
2 x Me and Em ribbed white t-shirts, one v neck and one vest
River Island bubble hem black skirt
Me and Em denim short sleeved blouse
Bonmarche linen wide leg trousers in a taupe/mustard colour
mint Velvet denim tie balloon sleeve blouse.

I'd really like some red trainers to add to this. Thinking the Walsh ones that I've seen on this thread or some red Gola ones.

@Neverenoughbiscuits Get the red Walsh ones! I love mine and it means supporting a small independent British business.

This is me wearing mine earlier this afternoon (apologies for silly cropped selfie - I took it to send a friend for a slightly bonkers and very identifying reason 😂)

LaRevolution · 19/04/2025 19:44

Bonsoir all, after another amble round the actual real live shops today (I don't get this chance very often!!) I have some more notes...:

  • Those chore jackets are EVERYWHERE! The nicest version I found was in White Stuff but also good options in Jigsaw and New Look.
  • There's lots of lovely prints out - best description I can give is Matisse-style - and I love that kind of thing so was happy to see that. I have an old Oysho shirt in that style that comes out every summer.
  • Zara was not as crackers/WTF as I last remembered, in fact there was quite a bit of stuff in there that wouldn't have been out of place in my youth, when I frequented Zara in Covent Garden every Saturday for their amazing jeans and hemmed 4 inches off every pair I bought here (and I'm not short!) However the queues for the fitting room and tills pissed me off so much that I didn't bother buying the lovely barrel leg chambray trousers I found.
  • The city I was in had some little independent boutiques and I saw a few really nice co-ord sets in splodgy watercolour prints (some of these tops in Jigsaw too) - if I had a wedding this summer I think I'd go down that route.
  • Wide-leg linen and cheesecloth trousers are EVERYWHERE! I prefer them slightly cropped - more like culottes - and I liked the ones in Seasalt in a sort of rust colour.

LaRevolution · 19/04/2025 19:53

Aaaaand another thing (sorry, posted too soon) - SO much broderie anglaise that it almost put me off a bit tbh! I usually like that as a detail but it was blinking everywhere.

Tryonemoretime · 19/04/2025 20:36

My younger daughter gave me her old denim jacket years ago and I will still wear it, but decided that it would be great to get something a bit different. Have bought a paler sandy / yellowy denim jacket from Faface and absolutely love it. Also bought straight cropped ecru jeans from Fat Face which go brilliantly with the jacket.
The colours now in the shops (yellow, brown, tomato) are my colours, so I'm really happy!
And leopard print? I have a narrowish leopard print belt which livens up a jeans and white tshirt combo no end. And a leopard print jersey jacket bought for a pittance from M and S a few years ago which people admire.
What I'm currently looking for is an ecru midi denim skirt....Anyone? TIA
