I'm not really one for yearly trends - most of my stuff is ancient/well-loved and fairly timeless - but I've just got my big bag of summer stuff out and it's weird how some of it is starting to look a bit off, somehow.

My denim jacket needs retiring for a while, I think - I put it on and it looked weirdly early 2000s, which has never bothered me before! I think a much wider silhouette for trousers is common now, but you'll have to pry my tapered linen cigarette pants from my cold dead hands. I also love simple mid-thigh shorts with pockets, and I still like how those look, but I'm a bit lost skirts and dresses-wise - don't really know what I want to wear this year in that regard. I could also do with a new casual jacket - maybe a sort of cropped chore jacket style with two front pockets. I'll have a look on Vinted.

What are you buying for spring/summer and what are you still wearing after 10/15 years?

I haven't added measurements to my vinted stuff, I will do it going forward!

UpMyself · 17/04/2025 19:04

I list things on Ebay and don't always put measurements. It depends on the garment.

YouOKHun · 17/04/2025 19:11

@FloismeI’m sure that’s right about Zara being at the front of the era of fast fashion. I visit physical (clothes) shops once or twice a year so don’t see the fast turnover week to week but it is problematic. I try to buy things that will last or things from Vinted etc. I am hoping my denim dress sees me out which should be perfectly possible assuming I have an average life expectancy!

Floisme · 17/04/2025 21:37

I’ve shopped at Zara myself in case my post sounded like a rebuke. I’m just pointing out that, if we buy it, we’re buying fast fashion.

owlexpress · 17/04/2025 21:40

I didn't mean to start a debate on the ethics of Zara, but it is clearly a fashion shop aimed at people who keep up with trends. If someone came on and said this is my new dress from Bon Marche, I'm going to wear it with my Hotter sandals that would be different. It does beg the question why someone would post on a thread about looking current and say they don't care though.

Anyhow, thank you to the PP who posted the H&M jacket. I have my eye on it in beige, and a lot of their new in stuff is lovely. Mango is good at the moment too.

Boho is apparently back but an elevated version (whatever that means). I'm seeing a lot of bead and resin jewellery.

YouOKHun · 17/04/2025 23:15

Yes, I see you would make an entirely different set of assumptions about someone you don’t know if they happened to say they like Hotter sandals whilst simultaneously claiming to be interested in fashion@owlexpress and I am sure you’d put them right about what they think.

I’ll forgive your misuse of “begging the question” and make no assumptions about you on the basis of this common error as I can see your focus is more Asos than Aristotle.

@Floismeno it didn’t sound like that at all. I agree with you!

HighLineGal · 18/04/2025 07:22

I hear you! Went through a similar process recently before a holiday to Tenerife. We went to a really nice hotel, so I wanted to look put together.

I played it fairly safe and stuck to classics too. Dressed for my body shape and in colours that suit me.

A few outfits I wore… Tailored black trousers from The Frankie Shop with a black waistcoat from Next, finished with chunky black sandals and a simple envelope leather clutch bag. I felt so chic.

An oversized linen blue and white shirt from Arket with tailored navy shorts, tan belt, and tan sandals and a nice basket bag from Sezanne.

Cropped linen trousers with a simple white tee, tan sandals… etc.

But this was just my holiday stuff. At home, I’ve opted for wide leg jeans and trainers, with basic tees and jumpers from Cos and Uniqlo. I love a cardigan too, worn as a top. In winter, oversized coats. I have one from Norse Projects that goes with everything.

My trainers are New Balance 990s. In classic shades. They’re super comfy. I’m avoiding adidas because everyone is wearing them.

For smart stuff, I have pointed flats or loafers. Pointed ankle boots. Slouchy trousers. Nice blouses or shirts. All in simple cuts. Nothing loud.

I love Parisian simplicity but I also love a little edge/street style.

My point is? Enjoy the process of seeing what you love. Be creative. Figure out your proportions and suitable colours. It makes the world of difference.

As for trends? I’d love a barn jacket or boxy oversized denim jacket. Alas, I look absurd in them. So I’m trying to figure out something current for spring summer. A cropped bomber jacket or cardigan with wide leg jeans or trousers seems to be the answer.

As for my trusty Gap denim jacket from two decades ago? I gave it my mum.

LaRevolution · 18/04/2025 07:23

I've just seen that H&M have that chore jacket in black and white striped, which I really like. Or is that the kind of design you think will go with things and doesn't?! I like the stone but it'll show every mark, and I have so much khaki and green already. I love the denim but would like to wear it with jeans.

There's lots of green, brown, rust, khaki, orange, yellow, yellowy creams in the shops. The clothes are nice and there are some cracking separates.

There are no rich pickings for summers like me this year. I scoured Peter Jones and the Kings Road yesterday for a formal occasion frock and compromised on a cream and green number from Whistles. My budget didn't have a limit but the colours were so meh (for me) that I wasn't prepared to go too spendy.

Or winters like me. I wouldn't wear most of what is on that list as they just wouldn't suit my shape - slim pear with no bust 😒

HighLineGal · 18/04/2025 07:41

I’m a winter too @RampantIvy. It’s a hard season to buy for. I’d love a camel coat, for example. But it’s never going to happen.

What I do wear is a beige trench in a cool tone. I also found a similar coloured bomber jacket the other day. It means I can wear that sort of shade without looking unwell! 😌👌

Delatron · 18/04/2025 07:47

Ah I think that’s why I’ve suddenly bought everything in sight in yellows, creams, caramel etc. I’m a Spring so I can get away with these colours. It’s a bit of a relief after burgundy was so fashionable and that’s awful on me. But I do feel for other seasons. It’s hard when colours dominate the fashion that don’t work for you..

RosesAndHellebores · 18/04/2025 08:04

Summers are as hard placed as winters at present. I love the concept of a camel coat, or beige, but the reality is rather deathly. Although they are overpriced, I can find neutrals in the right tone/shade at Kettlewell and they are an inspiration.

However, if I can find the strength to potter into Kingston this weekend, principally because I want something only Lakeland sell, a pp has made me very determined to visit the Hotter shop 😜.

I take my hat off to the poster who dresses up on holiday. DH has to be very trad and formal for work and I have to be tidy although thankfully my workplace channels Mary Beard. Holiday wear for us is the reverse of on trend or smart.

HighLineGal · 18/04/2025 08:05

Very jealous @Delatron! you’ve got so many nice colours to choose from! I’d love a khaki green utility jacket. Alas, it makes me look unwell.

I also have the issue of not suiting anything boxy or dropped shoulders on my top half. And to add to this? I’m tall. Slim. But tall. It’s a tough shape to dress. I have a longer body than legs. And massive feet 🤣

I have to balance things out and am so jealous of all the cool women wearing these boxy shapes. I suit structure or flow. Structured blazers or flowing trenches. I can just about get away with bomber jackets if they’re dainty enough.

Divebar2021 · 18/04/2025 08:10

Kingston is my local shopping spot too although I’m less enamoured now that Cos has gone. The charity shops are weirdly not as good as you would expect given the population. I have started to look at Massimo Dutti but their palette is very somber at the moment ( very brown influenced). I’ve just had a couple of work pieces in the sale there which I thought were good value. I popped into my local Oxfam which is mostly not good but found this Whistles dress which remarkably still for sale. It was £169 full price… I paid £7.99. I’m going to have to work out how to make it me but the colour is good for me.

SaladSandwichesForTea · 18/04/2025 08:17

I'm going to use this as a shameless opportunity to brag test I'm finally back into my teenage jeans that I've clung onto for 20 years after finslly losing that last pesky stone 😅

So my teen jeans (flares and skinnies) made the cut. Unfortunately some of the stuff I held onto is very outdated and looks awful on me (mainly because it wasn't my style e.g. delicate florals I was trying out)

I've realised that my 00s/emo era really suited me so I'm trying to do that in a modern way - think racer back vests and crop tops paired with flares/skinnies/lucy and yak Alexas, heavier brown eye make up instead of black, dark polished nails etc. Basically fitted on top, baggy on the bottom, sliver of tummy.

I'm also obsessed with Free People (especially the rompers) but I have yet to buy). I've added an inspiration collage 😆

Trainers are out for summer. Sorry not sorry.

Delatron · 18/04/2025 08:25

Ahh @HighLineGal I do feel for summers and winters at the moment with all these warm shades around!

I think red is also in so hopefully there’s some choice there.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2025 08:34

Poonu · 18/04/2025 08:21

Trainers are out for summer. Sorry not sorry.

Trainers will never be "out", neither will jeans.

The style and colour might change, but people will never stop wearing them.

polkaloca · 18/04/2025 08:38

Trainers are out for summer. Sorry not sorry.

They certainly aren't the dominant trend as they have been for years now but I'm not convinced the general public will shift away from them!

The OP was asking what was in.
Not what "classics" are

Divebar2021 · 18/04/2025 08:54

Well the trend forecasters I’ve seen are not saying trainers are out… they’re saying that trainers will be slimmer. They’re saying ballet flats are also still around ( and I’m still not getting mesh ones). I can’t remember mention of sandals but I will check next time they pop up on my fyp. ( not advocating for following their advice by the way )

I have quite a bit of stuff to shift, I’d rather put a lower price and hope someone is willing to take a risk. It would take me so much longer to measure things.

polkaloca · 18/04/2025 09:04

The trainers that are in are the boxing, retro, slim style. Clogs are back but that never goes mainstream 😆 Thongs and thong heels are back. But things take a long time to catch on, ballet pumps came back in 22/23 catwalk wise if I remember but the shops only really has a wide offer last year. It's bigger this year but I still haven't seen many wearing them although it's definitely increased.

polkaloca · 18/04/2025 09:06

Take the Samba - it was trending in 20/21 & it didn't peak till 24.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2025 09:08

What is a thong heel?
