When I'm usually more Mrs M&S ( nothing usually wrong with M&S) I just want a different look.

Happy with a Vinted bargain too.

I was in Oliver Bona today and thought it looked like a right old miss mash of over priced tat. There’s a pink sweat, and maybe 2 jump suits that don’t look cheap tat.

You're right. Oliver Bonas absolutely is overpriced tat.

What’s with the affiliate links in the OP? Seems a bit desperate - do mumsnet add those automatically?

Edited

I hadn't even noticed the links, definitely added by MN - I only typed the words (feels rather sneaky of them…).

Thank you all for so many ideas! I will take time to look. Fantastic to have so many choices and some great new brands to follow up, including through Vinted.

Thanks also for the AH info. I followed up some of her ‘spanish’ season and found one or two of the coords to be Melissa Odabash.

I'm quite taken with the idea of trousers and a waistcoat thanks to thisecsuggestingnthat, not something I had considered. This would be a much needed change from my usual dresses.

I'm also realising with your help that accessories are going to be key.

Something like this:

Green Aria Batik Floral Satin Dress

Try ‘Hope & Ivy’. Lovely, feminine creations in glorious semi-formal styles and beautiful colours. Well worth a look.

Posted by mistake.

This is lovely and would suit a petite person as the print is not overpowering. 👏

Gorgeous colour.

For me, sleeves and print feel like they would drown me.

I quite like this though …perhaps a little bit different…🤔https://roandzo.com/products/scarlett-lilac-twist-neck-maxi-dress

@Goodfaith I don't think you need anyone's guidance, you have great taste and that Ro&Zo magenta patterned dress is beautiful, classy and in my opinion, perfect for a family christening!

Hi OP.

we are very similar in size and build.

my go to would be to wear a dress, ideally one I already had, ideally plain rather than patterned with a leather jacket and leather ankle boots.

Hope you find what works for you.

Gosh there are some nice things there but some don't admit to what fabric is used which makes me very suspicious it is something unwearable (for me) like bastard Viscose! There are two dresses I really like and no where in the description do they admit to the fabric used!!!

Just seen this suit from Next, which I think is unusual and lovely

Really love this, apart from if it is a hot day. Very stylish though.

Someone previously said about a waistcoat and trousers. I've seen some people wearing outfits like this recently and they've looked fantastic. I've attached an idea but not sure if the length would work with your proportions or whether you'd feel swamped. Next have some lovely options too.

angelinawasrobbed · 15/04/2025 19:52

That’s lovely … but then if it’s a cold day, OP has the problem of what to wear on top. At least a jacket can be taken off.

the Telegraph has just done an article on Dior’s new Cruise collection: short or long kimonos worn over dresses, trousers, skirts. That could be an option: 100 Stars always has lovely kimonos.

will try to find pics

Me & Em is my go to for occasion dresses or Sezane, edited because I forgot to add Reformation!

MixedFeelingsNoFeelings · 16/04/2025 10:11

I don't have any specific suggestions but I feel that descriptions like cool, interesting, stylish, well dressed etc are all completely relative. They don't exist as absolutes ('this outfit is those things'), but in relation to the context.

To put it bluntly, if the majority of women at the Christening will be older relatives digging out their floral frocks - anything unconventional will make you stand out, but not for the reasons you intend.
Similarly, if the other guests are fashion-forward, you might feel a bit dull in conventional occasionwear.

Obviously no group of people at an event will all have the same 'style mentality'. But my approach is to try and read the room in advance and plan my look accordingly. Who do I want to align with? Then put together a look that has my take on that.
